Could I suggest you get Windows 7? I have both - Windows 8 on my laptop and Windows 7 on my desktop; Windows 7 is superior in many ways.

I like window 7 personally. The biggest change from Windows 7 to Windows 8 is the Windows 8 user interface (or UI--all those buttons and scroll bars you see on your screen). For decades, Windows has been known for its iconic Start Menu, the place you go at the bottom of your screen to access all your apps and settings. With Windows 8, that's entirely gone.
i have used both window 7 and window 8 but window 7 is far better than 8.

Have you gone from using a MAC to using a PC?

Windows 8 is a lot different than all of the other windows out there. You will need to use (new) or upgrade your other programs to be conpatiable with windows8. Like MS office, evernote, etc.

Most everything you do with a windows8 puter, is stored in the cloud for you.

I do like it. Took a couple of days to start to figure it out.

May I possible recommend watching a few YouTube tutorials on the features and things Windows8 offers. You can really get a visual feel for what you can expect to see and do on that type of OS.

I've been using Windows since I knew what a computer was, I'd love to transition to a Mac lol

But I wish you luck and success on finding your way around your new pc my friend

I highly recommend using Classic Shell to "fix" many of the usability issues with Windows 8. You can make it feel more like Windows 7 but keep most of the advantages of 8 (ex: security, speed).

Classic Shell is highly recommended. One of my PCs has Windows 8, and I don't even use their new UI with the Windows Store and their Apps. If you could get Windows 7, that would be ideal but with Windows 8 I would just use Classic Shell and you're good to go.

I love Classic Shell! Windows 8's interface makes me want to chew off my own arm... If you can still get Windows 7, I'd do so. It's much more Mac-like (well, as far as Windows will allow...) than 8 ever thought about being.

I love windows 7 and 8. I guess it would be awkward to go from windows to mac as well.

Don't worry you will get used to it after awhile.

Have you tried Windows 8.1 , it has a lot improvements from 8.0 . But anyway, Windows 7 is still the best (btw it costs more than 8.1)

I like Windows 7, not really excited about Windows 8.
If you have to use Windows 8, install Classic Shell as suggested above

My latest laptop came with Windows 8 and it was a bit frustrating at first.

As a writer, the biggest problem I had was that it didn't come with any form of Microsoft Word. That was a BIG problem for me but it was easy to solve. Apache OpenOffice works just as well and does everything that Microsoft Office does except it's absolutely free!

Windows 8 is fine once you get used to it. The live tiles are sort of pointless on a laptop that doesn't have a touch screen but I always just click into the desktop and it's essentially the same as it's always been.

To find programs that used to be in the start menu, you can just use the search function.

I haven't downloaded any "apps" for my laptop as I prefer regular desktop programs (still not sure what the difference is). My only real gripe is the McAfee bloatware that keeps harassing me.

It took me a little bit to get used to using 8 because I had 7. I don't even use the metro apps or anything. I'm always on the desktop. I have it set up to bypass metro screen and go straight to the desktop whenever I reboot or start up the computer. win 8.1 has the start button back but it's not the same as the 7 start menu. so I use Iobit's start menu feature to get that back.

  • I too was frustrated with Windows 8 when I first got it but a friend shared a mind trick with me that helped me adapt to Windows 8 faster. Just imagine you're using a tablet and that the programs you need are apps. I don't know if this helps but it certainly helped me =)
