How do you advertise when you only have a few products or services?

Let's say you are a self employed musician who teaches lessons.

So you initially post ads in the local newspaper, post flyers around your neighborhood, post ads on Facebook... Etc

So now your a piano teacher and you have lots of clients.

So to keep your business running, how are you going to keep advertising when you have a low amount of services/products to advertise about?

Are you going to just keep posting the same ads? isn't that sort of like spamming on the internet?

How does this work?

There is where creativity come in!
Be creative as possible. Why don't you post a video displaying your skills as a music teacher. You can also do a PR campaign which you can run free lessons for kids who can't afford to hire a music teacher, that would be a great PR which will give you exposure and good image as a teacher.

    Good luck!

I would start a blog and market your business this way. Dominate all local searches related to music, piano lessons, etc in your greater area. There are many ways you can dominate the search engines by writing music articles, anything you can think of that are related to music lessons. You won't come across as someone who are spamming, rather you're building an authority blog to market your business. You'll become someone whom people see as an authority, the benefits is you'll also continue to bring targeted leads that can convert to clients. While at this, I would also start a YouTube channel, post videos of you teaching lessons, give advises, etc.

If you don't already have a Facebook profile, I would also make sure your Facebook is tailored for your business. Start giving out daily value for your audience, tips and tricks, etc. Build your rapport.

I'm not going to lie, all these will take some time. But it's the best way to market your business for long term growth.

      All the best.

It`s easy. You have just a few well thought of products. Advertise each and everyone of them seperately. Make ads for each of the products and attract clients interested in any of them.

When you have only few products to sell you can focus more into improving your landing page, directing all marketing and traffic generation efforts only to that product.

For the spam thing, i think it is better to post more about a good product than posting every day about a crappy one.

Since your piano lessons are not free, you might use google adwords to drive traffic to your landing pages. Also you can include your phone or address into your adwords ad.

Yes, you can definitely keep advertising the same thing over and over and over and over again until you no longer offer that service/product. And no, it's not spamming if you do it right and according to the advertising platforms TOS.

For the longest time back in '04 to '05, I only ever had 1 product and 1 service... and I emailed my list 4 to 5 times a week always with a pitch to that product.

All of my daily advertising was for that 1 product/service.

You should be able to make a blog and top the serps for "Piano lessons in - 'your city/area' " with no problem whatsoever. A few related high quality links, facebook page.... and you are done.

Then weed the competition out of the top half of the top 10 by posting youtube videos, your facebook and twitter with that keyword. Rank them with blasts and social bookmarks to your hearts content.

Even if you live in no mans land and your site only gets about 20 visitors a month, by that stage you won't want any more students.

      Hi BigFoot,

Congratulations on taking action to move from a musician to a teacher. Well done you!

Now you need to position yourself as the 'Go To' piano guy in your area. So that, when someone wants to learn the piano, you're the first person they will think of. And, if they ask others who is a good piano teacher, it will be your name that comes up most often.

At that point you'll have folks coming to you, so you''ll hardly need to worry about advertising.

And how you get to that stage is to start to build goodwill by giving value, and then the bookings will tend to follow.

So I suggest you do this by creating a series of videos, like this: A S A Piano HD Beginners Piano & Keyboard Guide - YouTube which you can also put on YouTube and your own web site to teach prospective pupils some elementary lessons and make them want more of the same, as well as showcasing your expertise and teaching style.

One final point: if you do go ahead with this, please invest a few bucks in a lapel mike and don't just rely on the built-in mike in the camera, as seems to be the case with this video.

Good luck with your teaching career.

      Warmest regards,

      Paul

  • Hi Bigfoot12,
Congratulations for moving. In my opinion you can advertise your products on you tube. Because you tube is place where you get traffic in bulk. Another thing, with the help of Facebook you can promote your business. And you can use use websites that allow to post classifieds. Select the appropriate category according to your business.

Before I did anything else, I'd analyze where my potential customers are....

I'm going to guess the majority of your students are young children. Where can you place your efforts most effectively to reach young children and their parents?

My immediate thought would be to offer free starter lessons at local schools and churches. Try to get them to send announcements, or "permission slips" home to their parents to "allow" their child to take your free lessons at the school/church.

Guess who the parents are going to think of when their child starts begging to take lessons? You step to the front of the line as the authority, instead of just another competitor in the paper and online.

Grab their hearts by giving extra value up front...their pocketbooks will follow.
