A Scary Story (& Warning) About Domains

I just ran into an "issue" I had never thought about… but should have.

As I was editing and updating one of my most popular free reports in the
self help niche, I came across a link/domain that I used (to use) to redirect
to a CB affiliate link.

Fortunately, I thought of checking the link - because I wasn't sure whether I
still owned the domain (or whether I still redirected it where I thought it
was going to).

Imagine my horror when the website that opened was a pretty ghastly
Japanese porn site with a rather explicit image front and center.

Yikes!

So I checked my Godaddy account and indeed, I no longer owned that
domain.

It had never occurred to me that if I let go of a domain that it would turn
into something like THAT!

Obviously, I immediately created a new redirect to a domain I actually
own, and changed the link in the report, and re-uploaded it to my server.

I'll also have to send my subscribers a replacement report with the new
link.

And then I will have to search through hundreds of blog posts and articles
and several reports and some resource pages to make sure I remove and
replace any links to THAT page.

I guess I was lucky! I almost posted a WSO with a new guide that had this
link in its resource box. Fortunately, now it doesn't.

Some lessons…

I'll need to be more careful when I let domains expire that are in any of
my free ebooks and special reports… and certainly remove or update the
booklets.

I've got dozens of such domains floating about in cyberspace right now,
and sure hope that none of the others will come back to haunt me like that.

From now on, I will always make sure to renew domains that I've been
spreading around. I used to think that the worst thing that could happen
was that there'd be a dead link, and I'd lose a commission. For products
that I never sold any of, that didn't seem much of a problem.

As it turns out, there's a whole other dimension of potential trouble out
there...

I've heard it said that the Internet has a perfect memory.

Often that's a good thing. Sometimes it's a bad thing.

You are to be commended for making every effort you can to correct the situation and protect your customers from an ugly surprise.

    Good luck,

Hmmm. It DID have a bit of age on it, plus I guess they know that some people will click on this link expecting something different. Yikes.

These porn sites are lurking in the shadows of expired domain sites all the time. If the domain has any traffic at all they buy it.

Very scary indeed. As a rampant affiliate marketer, I often pull my hair out keeping the MILLION links I have out there updated.

It's seriously the source of frustration.

Here's a tip: Instead of sharing "Direct" pdf links, share a CLOUD DRIVE that you can always keep updated.

So, put your PDF in a dropbox shared drive, and then share the LINK to that.

SO, if you ever update your PDF, your link is automatically updated.

    :]

Hope this helps, and yeah, being a publishing ninja can be VERY frustrating.

But, at the end of the day; don't let it stress you out.

Afterall, we're only humans on a planet.

This seems a good idea for a product.
I'm sure someone with software skills could fashion up some sort of software that would track all domains in order of when bought or updated with content, expired etc.

Thanks for your encouraging words. About the cloud drive idea... I'm not sure I'm following this... Once people download the PDFs, won't the links in there be permanent? Or is there a software that actually updates the PDFs?

It does indeed. I could sure use a software like that. Maybe I can find a whiz on Fiverr to create it...

For example, you could have ElisabethLoves.com/AffiliateProduct/ and redirect that URL to the affiliate product. Then you could simply share your ElisabethLoves.com/AffiliateProduct/ link in everything (keeping you totally in control).

That way if you decided to stop promoting that product down the line, you could simply redirect that 1 page to a different affiliate product instead of having to edit the link all across the web. Just my $0.02.
That's a great idea. I do use a domain like that actually (checkoutthislink.com), but with some of them I find that they look more credible if they have their own domain names. But then, considering the risk, it might not be worth it. And I'd be saving some money too!

So yes, I just bought ElisabethLoves.com

      Thanks for suggesting that, Avery!
