Directories Help Traffic?

Has anyone had any experiences where placing your site on a directory actually and truly resulted in more traffic to your website? If so, what directory was it? I've placed my site on several and found so far that they are either the wrong ones, or putting my site on directories just isn't worth the time and effort.

General directories just send average browsers. To get good traffic you'd need featured links on popular directories which costs a fortune.

You'd be better spending that on normal one way links or PPC if you want traffic.

Besides submitting your site to general directories and paid directories, it is often helpful to post your site to industry specific directories such as web design directories, marketing and advertising directories, etc. These sites receive more directed traffic and can help you increase the number of quality back links to your site.

The primary value of posting links in directories is to get a link pointing to your site. In general, you won't get much click-through traffic from this--especially if you're not paying to get a better position.

It´s targeted traffic you need, and by putting your site on general directories will get your site visitors that are not interested in what you have to offer.Look for directories in your niche instead and write content on your site to get traffic from search engines directly which is highly targeted traffic.

very rare that a link will generate much traffic, it just does not happen this way. however, a link is a link, it helps the ranking. link building is a long term work, not for quick money.

General directories can be good if you use your noddle and do it properly

I do run a couple of general directories and nowadays (because I'm an old grump!) I delete submissions which have been put in an inappropriate category. Categories are there so that links in them get the benefit of more targeted traffic. (Loads of directory scripts have rss feeds for categories.) It also improves the quality of the directory if you take the time to add your link to the appropriate section.

Some tips for using general directories

      1. Don't expect traffic from the directory itself. Some search engines (heck, you mean Google has competition??) love links in directories and you can get traffic from their search results.
      2. Put a zingy, well targeted title for your directory link. In other words, if you're targeting a keyphrase, for goodness sake use that! If you submit to loads of directories, don't always use the same keyphrase either.
      3. Put a thoughtful and well-crafted description of your web site into the Description field. If you do get found through the search engines, this is your first sales pitch to potential visitors.
      4. IF the directory offers you the chance to put meta keywords and meta description for your link, try and use a variety of the key phrases you are hoping to target for your site.
      5. Don't submit to 1,000 directories all at once. Find a list of directories and do a few at a time.
      6. Try to avoid a reciprocal link situation. You can find yourself linking to a bad neighborhood.

Some general directories are better than others; just remember that there's a human being at the other end of the submission process who has to wade through a bunch of rubbish before he or she has the chance to approve good web sites and good links. Try and find directories which slant towards your topic - and follow the tips I've included here.
