Default New Email Phishing Scam...Be Very Careful

Well, these scammers are getting very smart.

Realizing that most online stuff is probably going to be ignored by smart
people (your account is limited, etc.) they are now attacking the UPS
system. For those of you outside of the US, that's United Parcel Service.
I'm not sure if they have those outside of the US.

Anyway, the phishing scam works like this.

They send you an email telling you that your UPS delivery could not be sent
to you because your address was filled out wrong by the person sending it.

They then give you a site to go to in order to fill out a form in order to
collect the package at their office.

Not knowing if somebody actually sent you a package or not (unless
they notified you ahead of time) you wouldn't really know that this is
bogus.

A variation of this is they attach a file that, once you download, grabs
information from your PC.

If you see anything about a UPS delivery, ignore it.

Contact your local UPS office and ask them if they have a package for
you. Give them your name, address, etc. Verify that there is something
waiting for you.

If somebody actually DID send you something and they sent it to the wrong
address, the package will be sent back to them and I am then sure they
will do what they can to make sure they get the correct address and then
resend it.

I almost fell for this because it was so different. But then I thought to
myself, I better check into this. So I checked the header of the email
and a few other things, such as the domain, and discovered that it was
from an Eastern country.

Please be careful.

Steve -

Yup. Got my UPS virus email package earlier today too.

It had a zip attachment with the filename UPSFILE_NR67721912.zip.

The email came from Garrett Correa <sophocleanpog29@seh.com> with IP 88.75.143.10 which is someplace in Germany, although the IP could have been spoofed.

The trend seems to be toward impersonating trusted institutions. I get phony eBay and PayPal emails most every week. I always log into the websites before replying to messages or such. The simple rule is to never click a link in an email that you were not specifically expecting-- like an opt-in verification. Of course, those of us in the email marketing business have to hope other people don't follow that rule. Thus the ironies of our business, I guess. There's always somebody trying to spoil things for everybody.

I got one that was from cloned UPS quantum view management screen - which was very well done. I use quantum view management at work to track all of our UPS packages so it really caught me with my guard down.

Yep it's because of the way they cloak the links in the emails.

Steve I've been getting them for a while now, but more in the last few days.
The ones that have the virus in the zip files set's my Avast off.
The ones that just try to get me to go to their websites get deleted as soon as I see the subject line.
It is amazing sometimes what they try, always playing on peoples greed.

That phrase in the first line should stop you cold.

UPS does not refer to "postal packages"

They don't refer to pickup points as "departments"

Nor do they call themselves UPS "of America"

90% of the time if you read the first line or two of these scams you'll clearly see they were not written by native English speakers.

By the way, if you're looking for a great anti-spam program and can spare $39.95 / year for 2 computers, I highly recommend Cloudmark.

It works for Outlook, Outlook Express, and Thunderbird. Very lightweight and catches a TON of spam.

I've tried to go the cheap way by using the free anti-spam programs but none of them compare to Cloudmark. And at $39.95 it comes out to $0.11 / day. I know I would spend way more than that manually deleting all the spam I get.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for your kind head's up.

They were like this always and they will be always. The human creativity doesn't know the bounds. Although I would turn up with pleasure without the similar 'creative' emails.

There is someone who devotes his creativity to the humanity's profit but you can find many who is glad if he can cause damage to others rather.

We need to sharpen our saw always to avoid such 'creativity'. I already made a bad bargain with them sometimes. So be careful when you intend to click on an unfamiliar link.

Cheers,

Sandor

My email account is pretty good at deterring spam so I don't get a lot of these, but I do have an old Hotmail account and it seems to be a magnet. They said the Spam is set up to maximum, but many things squeak past it.

Thanks for the heads up! Hopefully if someone gets that email they'll read it thoroughly!

Uk Warriors heads up

This is also happening in the UK. I had a series of about ten of these in May. As I only use parcel force here I knew it was a scam immediately. Mind you UPS in the uk must be hating it

Yes, I've been getting these to many of my email accounts and from PayPal and banks too.

For ease of administration, I tend to use different email accounts for different purposes, such as one for the WF, one for PayPal, some for advertising, one for friends and family and so on and so on.

If anything unusual, such as the emails that we are discussing, arrives in any but the appropriate mail box, then I delete it immediately and report it as spam.

If something arrives in a mail box that relates to the purpose for which the email account was set up, then I look more closely. If the English grammar or spelling do not make sense, then to the 'Spam folder it goes'. Otherwise, I look at the email headers before I consider opening it.

If in doubt, forward the email with open headers to the Parcel Delivery Service, Bank or provider that it purports to have been sent from and ask them to authenticate it.

Just my thoughts,
Jeff.

I'll let you all into a little secret, shoosh though, please don't let this get out to the people who live in the real world - promise?

Scammers will use any way they can to get your money from you.

If your bank suspects fraudulant activity on your account, it immediately (well here in the UK anyway) sends you a recorded message down the old communication system, otherwise known as the landline, and tells you digitally what transactions it wants you to agree or deny ...... gives you the choice of 4, one you will recognise and 3 that are ....... obviously you couldn't have done.... like one in Latvia buying $567 worth of shoes! (heck if I spent that much on shoes to date, just this year alone, it would have been too much) one in the USA renting a dvd! WTF! and one in ........ well you get the message hopefully.

If a parcel guy can't deliver a package to you he puts a card through your door, he doesn't send you an email.......

So if you if you get the email from the ups guy - delete it. If you get an email from the FED gove agency - delete it, if you get an email from yourself........ delete that too.

Due dilligence?

Wow, haven't seen that one yet, thanks for the heads up Steven!

I got a sneaky one today too, the subject said "Notification of Payment Received Item #2325" I couldn't remember if I have a product with that number, so I clicked to see which one it was - and it was a spammer trying to get me to buy an ebook that would (supposedly) teach me how to make my inbox fill up with notifications like that! LOL I can't believe I fell for it at first, but I honestly couldn't remember if it was one of my prods or not! Luckily there was no virus attached, but still such a dirty tactic.
