For those earning - how did you start off? quantity (small niches) or quality (authorities)

For example
- i am starting off with primarily ad sense projects and 1 amazon project.

I am curious as a beginning earner.

How did you start off

did you just start building a ton of small 7 - 12 page adsense sites or amazon sites or did you just go big and start with 100+/1000+ page sites monetized with adsense, amazon and building a list?

Some people have said that they are starting to kill off some projects that are smaller. My concern is,

- Am I wasting my time building these small sites?
- should i focus on my bigger niche ideas?

It is very hard to make decent money with Adsense, you need a TON of traffic. Your better off being an affiliate and recommending a product related to your site.

      Agreed.

A large volume of traffic is needed in order to make anything decent with Adsense.

There is much better ways to earn like building a PBN and selling links

but it will take a lot of coordination to pull it off.

I started off selling my own products on niche websites. At one point I had over 200 hundred of them.

It was a nightmare to keep track of. So I sold off that portfolio and decided to trim the fat on my next go round.

Today I'm in 3 niches and I go very DEEP in each of them. What do I mean by deep? I market at least 25 products and services in each niche, in one of them, it's over 200.

I buy traffic, I tweak the conversions, I build a list, set up an autoresponder that sends out valuable information about twice a week for at least a year, and the money rolls in virtually on autopilot. I have one fulltime VA that handles 99% of the customer services issues and 1 fulltime sales person.

Once my lists get to a certain size I sell off the business, take a long vacation and then I come back and repeat the process.

I stopped using Adsense years ago when I saw I could make way more money sending targeted traffic to a squeeze page or a content squeeze page and marketing to them forever.

Before you dump Adsense, make sure you run a test where you send traffic to your Adsense site and then send traffic to an identical site but use affiliate banner ads and affiliate links. Run the test with a minimum of 1,000 targeted visitors and see which one earns you more money.

In my testing, the Adsense sites lost every time and I used a lot more than 1,000 visitors in my testing.

I started off with a small number of authority sites and 110% of my devotion. I didn’t start making money right away, but once it started it was a considerable amount every month.

I started off by making a dumb dating site on how to get girls. It was so easy to rank the keyword with programs like BUILD MY RANK back in the day.

I monetized through adsense, and I used a simple wordpress theme. I should have capitalized by signing up to some type of affiliate program. Adsense was getting me $7 a day with 200 visitors a day. So.....yeah lesson learned.

Having a huge network of websites sounds very appealing to some, but the actual logistics of managing it can be a nightmare.

I think for someone starting out, its best to focus all your effort and energy on one project and get that successful before branching out to creating a bunch of other sites.

  • What we did was start in the B2B ICT service industry. We targeted overseas ICT corporations with newly launched products and 300 to 500++ employees. We steadily built our company resources that way...

When our major corporate clients reduced their projects after the downturn in the economy, we then expanded to cover smaller B2B markets, such as Adsense site owners or Amazon affiliates and so on here and in other IM / SEO / affiliate marketing Web forums. We also signed up additional corporate clients for fixed monthly contracts with performance-based agreements...

Upon apparent global economic recovery, we reverted our focus to our overseas corporate clientele network and also continued to run small departments for our smaller B2B clientele network. We also expanded to other corporate B2B services, such as multi-lingual call center services...

In our 9 years of running our global ICT company, clients who prematurely terminated their contracts with us without any contract breach on our side were all in our smaller B2B clientele network, and a large number of them had Adsense sites, while some owned Amazon sites...

    I agree with Rod.
Not only agree...I think what he does is awesome.

The key is to start with a niche you have a little interest in ( that's how you keep working at it, even when you are not earning) and then let your audience tell you what they want.

The truth is when you really dive deep into a niche, you'll be able to see things you werent able to see earlier.
You'll be able to find subniches that other people miss out because they were not so involved in it.

    The point is:
Focus on quality - Pick one or two niches and dive deep into it.

Start too many small niche sites at once and...you'll burn out.
The next thing is...you'll start cutting down the number of sites.

    Now, you have a choice.
Start with two niches and dive deep, then expand into subniches later on.

    OR

Start with a lot of small niche sites and start cutting down the ones that are not profitable or that dont interest you anymore.

    Choice is yours.

    my 2 cents worth,
    Faraz

i started with both big sites and small sites.

big sites that you build into authority sites are more long term, but they take longer to lift off because they are so general.

small sites are more short term. they can bring in long term income, but they are more prone to getting slapped by google if you're doing seo. and their scope is limited. but they are easier to get started earning money with because they are so targeted and aim directly at a very, very specific type of problem.

so this is what i would do if i were you.

create a big site that covers a general topic. at the same time, create small sites covering specific topics that are under that general topic.

everytime you create a small site, take what you posted on your small site, rewrite the content, and post it on your big site as well.

that way you grow both short term and long term. if you get what i mean.

you big site will keep growing the more small sites you have. and you will diversify with a lot of small sites at the same time. you can also link your small sites to your big site for added traffic.

    cool right?

** Disclaimer** I am currently not earning a living online.

In 2000, I lost my last corporate job because of downsizing. For 3 years after that I tried to find another one with no luck. Finally, out of desperation, I turned to the Internet. I started out doing every stupid thing you can think of from paid to read emails to surveys to you name it.

      I made like $10 in 3 months.

Finally, I stumbled onto a legit traffic generation program which at the time was one of the best things around. Today, that program is pretty much dead in the water. But in 2003, it was great. But my excitement about seeing how good the program was turned into personal referrals to people I knew. It was from those referrals that my business started to grow.

The problem was, it stalled out at about $1,500 a month and there was no way I could live on that. So finally, after a couple of years, I started looking for something to do as a job while the business grew. That's when I stumbled onto a gig where I would write articles for some guy who owned a site and got paid for doing so. Well, I always loved to write so I started cranking them out like crazy for all the niches he listed. Turns out he just put these articles up on Adsense sites. This was before these sites took their major hit from Google.

Anyway, I remember my one PayPal payment for writing all these articles came to like $1,200. I was in heaven.

Then I got a brainstorm and it was the one that changed my whole life.

I thought to myself, "Why don't I write a book on how to write articles for payment?" So I did. I researched other sites that paid for article writing and included everything in the book. I put it up on Clickbank and my first month I made 200 sales.

Everything after that was history. I just kept turning out one product after another, using article marketing itself as my traffic source.

This lasted for about 4 years until finally Google pulled the rug out from article directories and my traffic literally dried up over night. So I went from making a crap ton of money to making all of $300 this year.

      It's been a humbling experience.

If I had to start it all over again (well actually I do and I did) I'd put up an authority site in a niche and concentrate on that one thing and build it up until it was successful. I'd put everything I had into it, which I've done.

I have no idea if this current business venture is going to be profitable. I'd like to think, given my past experience and knowledge about some things marketing related, that it will be. My biggest stumbling block, now that article marketing doesn't work the way it used to and I have no idea how to make it work, is generating traffic. I have a few ideas thanks to the wonderful people at this forum. I hope they pan out.

My advice to you is as follows:

      1) Don't get caught in the shiny object syndrome. Pick one thing and put everything you have into it. Make sure you research that one thing first to make sure it's viable. You don't want to get into a niche that has no earning potential.

      2) Learn how to communicate with people. Writing is going to be one of the most important things you do, whether it's a blog post, a sales page or an email to a prospective customer. If you don't communicate well you're going to lose a lot of money.

      3) Run your business as if your life depends on it. If you're not serious about making money, you won't.

      4) Don't quit. No matter how tough things get you have to keep at it. It may not happen for you right away. It took me years to make a decent living and now I'm starting all over from scratch. If anybody has a right to be discouraged it's me. But I'm not. I'm more determined than ever to get back to where I was.

      5) Enjoy what you're doing. If you don't, it's going to be very difficult to continue doing it.

That's my 2 cents for whatever they're worth from a guy who's broker than a government run brothel.

I made my very FIRST sale online using Devon's Browns Webcopycat system about 2 years ago. That was the beginning for me and it made me realize that making money online can be done.

Till today, I still promote that program and making monthly recurring commissions. Its an EASY place to start for newbies.
