Any ideas on improving SNS presence?

I work for a mid-sized market research firm, and was wondering how we can go about improving our SNS presence.
At the moment, we're making minimal use of Facebook and Youtube. The main objective is to expand our online presence and brand exposure.
1. What would be some effective ways to use the major SNS channels (Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, etc.)?
2. Are there any other effective SNS channels that can be utilized?
We'll likely experiment with channels that are easier to use/don't require too much time/cost investment, and go from there.
I must admit I'm fairly new to this, so if any of this seems vague, I'd be more than happy to provide more specific details if needed.
