List building in a tough market - a few questions

Hi there guys,

I have been reading this forum for a while and I got a tough question to all of you.

I work for a guy who recently started his new project - list building and marketing in... Forex (currency trading) area. So the market is quite competitive there. My boss has been a trader for a long time, got a great background (he is a mathematician and a corporate consultant) and a lot of contacts in the industry so we have released an eBook that is like Schwager's interviews with top traders.

Now we would like to focus on an opt-in list building. And here is my question: do you have any ideas for new and creative ways of promoting this list / newsletter in such a crowded market?

We of course do some standard stuff like bonuses after subscribing, article publishing, we will also post some educational videos on youtube shortly (gotta admit that learning Adobe AfterEffects was not the easiest thing to do), we were also thinking about starting a contest for new users and give out some valuable subscriptions for currency trading signals providers (it's more less like: you buy a monthly subscription for $100-$1000 and the provider tells you when buy or sell).

I wanted to ask:
  • if you maybe have something else in mind, some other ideas;
  • what methods, in your opinion, work best for list building in such an area.

    Indeed, this is a very competitive market, but I assume the return for single clients can be quite good. I've always found one of the best places to look is your existing customer base. Maybe get on the phone with a few of them and talk about what you could do better, and see if they can suggest anyone else that might want to get on the list. It sounds like what you need is some traction to get you moving, and your existing customers may be a great place to start.

    That's a great idea to do promotion. And list building is a good thing it not only will help to this kind of business but also will help in other types of business when you want to do. Personally I think its a great thing to do.
