Honestly confused about how to go about marketing my new website

I have read dozens of lists on marketing, traffic building, advertising etc over the last few hours and I am utterly lost. What these lists don't seem to tell you is what is effective and what is not. Heres my story, hopefully someone can point me in the right direction:

I just started a blog last week that seems to be catching a lot of interest(2,500 hits, 100 fb likes, high fb engagement) and I would like to know what you would recommend to grow traffic and spread the word faster?

Currently I have been posting 3-5 new articles a week and sharing them on Facebook($5 boosts) and twitter.
I launched my first give a way today(post on fb and twitter)
Submitted my url to about 10 free directories(today)

My goals are to get 100k+ fb likes and 100k+ hits a month for traffic... with high hopes to reach those goals around my 1 year mark.

So if you have any suggestions I am all ears. Current marketing budget:$250mo, will grow as I start making money from the website.

What was your giveaway, if it was in PDF form it would be a good idea to share it (with links back to your website from sites these:

ISSUU - Digital Publishing Platform for Magazines, Catalogs, and more
    http://www.wattpad.com/
4shared.com - free file sharing and storage
    http://www.gazhoo.com/
    edocr | edocr
    ThinkFree Online - Docs
Free-eBooks.net | Download free Fiction, Health, Romance and many more ebooks

There are many others but this is a good start.

If your giveaway is a video publish it to Youtube and other video syndication sites like vimeo etc.

Tell me more and I will advise more

I'm giving away a $50 Gift Card To Groupon
My blog is focused around travel, recreation, things to do, adventures etc. I thought giving away the gift card would get some more FB likes(I will be randomly choosing a fan from my FB page).

    Hi,

Are you currently building an email list because doing so will allow you to "recycle" your visitors and keep them coming back.

There's no way to tell what would and wouldn't be effective for you without testing or knowing anything about your market. You may find that competition for your keywords is low in which case an SEO campaign may be the best way forward but then if your market is saturated that wouldn't be an effective, or cost effective method (although you shouldn't entirely disregard it).

There are a massive range of methods to get visitors to your site. I think what you need to focus on is quality of traffic. Who is searching for your info? Where are they "hanging out" online? Would it be effective to perhaps do a little bit of offline marketing?

I'm not currently building an email list, but I will work that into my site.

I do know that I get the most visitors in the 18-24 year old age range(men and women) according to my website statistics, which makes sense because i'm in that range and most of my friends love the concept as well.

But as far as I know its all about social media. Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Youtube, etc. I understand that the more articles I post the bigger a following I will get. But do offline marketing campaigns work? I know where my target market is in the real world.

(I just want a solid foundation of traffic, twitter follows, and FB likes in the near future)

If I can get to 10k+ FB Likes and Twitter followers within the next couple months the rest is smooth sailing. Its just getting to that first milestone that is the real challenge for me.

See a year ago I would have agreed with the whole facebook list building thing but as of late facebook has been messing about with the way they do things.

Example: I have a fan page that has over 13,000 fans on it. It used to be that when I updated my fan page I got a good readership i.e. a lot of people saw the post. Now I'm lucky if 100 people see it!!

I saw a post from this guy called reeps one (not IM related) and he said "Dear mr facebook, it would be cool if you showed the 65,000 people who took the tie to like my page my updates, thank you"

Facebook seem to only be rewarding people who "boost" which means to me that the concept of social media has died (at least when it comes to facebook). Don't get me wrong if you pay for traffic you can get fans and visitors to your site but is that sustainable/what you currently think of facebook?

Another thing that really gripped my sh1t was when they removed the function of looking at the people who like your page. There is a way round their barricades but it's not cool!!

Don't mean to put you off or anything! I would recommend if you're using facebook to make your site viral friendly in that if people like your posts they share it on! That's the way to do it with facebook (unless you're paying for ads)!

So far I have been getting great stats for likes, shares and fans... The whole idea is to do viral friendly articles focused on my niche.

I know that Facebook really screwed with our audience, but I do want to build that presence. Word of mouth is an awesome way to get the word out and my target demographics use social media more than anything else.

For list building I think Facebook and Twitter are the best medias.

Use it as much as you can.

For more traffic and SEO for your website. simply use GSA Ser Engine Ranker and Scrapebox and I can do that for you.

    Take Care!

I really like this idea, and it would fit perfectly with my blog. I didn't even think about that.

Will start working on that tomorrow. Thank you!

Ok, you've got a potential gold mine because it's proven popular on social media.

Start monetizing and test until you're earning well consistently. It can be a combo of email marketing, Adsense, media.net affiliate offers and cpa offers.

Then start buying Facebook ads using clicks directly to you website to pages that generate profits (including opt ins). Test different types of ads but because your content is already popular on FB create ads of your most popular content that also earns (and gets subscribers).

I bet your niche will do well on Pinterest too... So pin regularly. Focus on good content that gets shared AND that can earn revenue.

Depending on how much your site earns, consider content marketing ad networks like Outbrain, Taboola and Disqus. You can get floods of fairly inexpensive traffic from these ad networks.

Generally because of the viral nature of Facebook, FB ads are hard to beat in social media friendly niches.

So far with FB I'm averaging about 200-300 hits a day in traffic, the worst was 119 the best was 700+. Right now i've been doing $5 boosts on the best posts and thats it.... and the page engagement/fans are increasing daily.

I think your right about it being a potential gold mine, its a completely new blog and is taking off fast. Writing new articles is easy, but the rest is confusing.

I've also added a pinterest account for it and started building my boards. That may help bring in traffic down the road too.

I also wanted to ask if anyone had experience with flyers/handouts? I know a big chunk of my target market can be found at colleges and on military bases(i have access). Would this be a good option? Flyer Lab offers 1000k free 4"x6" handouts a month and I was hoping someone could tell me if its worth it or not.

As you said that your blog is about travel, recreation & adventures, you should try video marketing. Like create a killer animated explainer video describing how & why people should follow your blog. this is just one idea, there's millions of ideas for creating catchy travel videos.

I have very little experience with making videos, but I can always get the footage and see if I can find someone from my college who is good at video editing. I'll start scanning youtube for ideas. Thank you =)

And 200 of those are from facebook? If so, then you really should be doing some SEO work instead of walking around handing out fliers on the street.
Make sure you use good keywords in the title and in the beginning of the article and you should be getting far more se traffic pretty soon.

Also, you said you submitted to 10 directories. I have a domain with a few niche blogs and after I submitted my url to this site; Ping My Url - FREE Website Submission Service - Add URL my se traffic doubled and that's steady numbers, not just a peak when submitting.

      Good luck

The blog is now only 10 days old. Google just started indexing it. I have slowly started to see traffic from google, but i would assume it will take time.
I will check out the Ping My URL site too. But i don't expect huge numbers from search engines for at least the first 6 months.

There are so many different traffic generation methods to drive traffic to the website. I personally feel that the most practical thing to do is to stay focus on mastering one traffic generation at a time.

If you want to use Facebook Ads, then you will focus all your time and money into becoming an expert in Facebook ads before jumping to the next traffic generation method.

Most of the time, these proven traffic generation methods works but it is the person that does not make it work. Most of the people will jump from traffic generation method to another method thinking that the next method seems to be faster and easier.

Stick to one proven traffic generation method and master it before mastering another traffic generation method.

For the best traffic out there, I would go with pay per click ads.

Just make sure you only work with the big names like Google, Yahoo, and Bing.

    When you bid, start small.

Yeah I'm not selling anything on my blog. I have adsense and affiliate banners, but no products.... and I highly doubt I ever will. I don't even know what type of products I could sell for this niche.

I want word of mouth traffic, which is why I now have many social media site pages. The goal with the FB boosts is to grow my audience to a point where they spread my articles for me. No boosts needed.

I would build a list from the blog and start selling them something... some sort of affiliate offer or something. Of course adsense is an option too, but you have to do your part to bring your subscribers back to your blog everyday (or whenever you post).

I've actually written a blog post about 25 ways to generate leads online with full detailed descriptions.

I'm hesitant to put it up in the forums as I'm new here and don't want to be seen as spamming. But if you'd like I can send it too you?

One of the most effective ways is to just find places on and offline that already have access to the traffic you want and negotiate a deal or provide enough value to send that traffic your way.

I know that Derek Halpern from social triggers uses this strategy to great effect.

I'd say if what you are doing is working as well as it is working, change nothing regarding your traffic generation. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

However, get some adsense ads on there and an option for people to join your email list. Once a week send out an email with links to the weekly round up of articles.
