Hello everyone. Thanks for taking the time to read and (hopefully) respond. Brand new to IM, willing to learn, trying to learn, and willing to keep up with the hard work that is required.

The first niche that I'm thinking of targeting doesn't have a huge (at least that's my educated guess having been in the field) number of potential customers, however, those that are in this field are very passionate about it. I'm thinking of going with this because I have in-depth knowledge of the field, which would hopefully make it a little easier, and because it's actually something I care about.

I'm thinking of writing an eBook geared towards getting started in this field, and how to progress. Nothing super in-depth, but just a general overview of the field, how to get started, and where it can take you/career paths, etc.

From what I've read so far on here, list building seems to be one of the best ways to get started. But my question is, let's say I build a small list off this ebook, what to do with it from there? Sorry, that sounds like a silly question, but as I stated, I'm just getting started and trying to learn what I can.

Thanks in advance.

After effectively establishing your reputation across your mailing list subscribers as a friendly expert resource of specialized niche content (with some follow-up non-promotional emails) -- You can recommend to your mailing list subscribers your own paid products, or the paid products of others (as their affiliate) so you can earn commissions for each generated sale...

Be sure to regularly contact your list, so they come to expect messages from you.

In these messages, provide value to them, in any form, don't immediately pitch any products for them to buy. Then try to start alternating messages providing value with messages selling them something.
You can sell them affiliate products or your own products of course.

A good thing to start with after your first followup is to tell a bit about yourself and what you are planning on offering them.

You could set up a blog in your niche and then email your list encouraging them to see the content on your blog and comment on it. This will help build your reputation so your email list will get to know like and trust you.

One day survey your list asking them what they want to know and what they need help with in that niche and based on the answers create a membership website which you would then tell your email list about.

All the best with your online business

If you write a high quality ebook and build a buyers list from your ebook sales, you're well on your way to become a very succesful marketer

Just make sure you keep providing value to your subscribers. You can promote but make sure it's something they need and will benefit them.

The hardest part is the first step to write the ebook and start selling it. Building a relationship with your subscribers is much easier if you're already considered as an authority in your niche.

    Good luck!

Yes list building is a very good thing to be doing. I wouldn't be so shy to use that specialized knowledge you have, maybe create a free ebook, then create a video course. Try to sell people who signup for the free ebook the video course. People love watching videos.

As far as what to do with the list, you want to use autoresponders from Aweber or Mailchimp to build a relationship with your list. Send them something awesome every few days related to the niche, then pitch them your newest products when they are ready.

Create the product first then go from there. Without a product you have no business.

      CrossEyed,

To me, I think the most important thing right off the bat, is to ask the subscribers of your list what they would like from you.

You're trying to build a reputation as an authority, an expert in the field. You already have a great start. By becoming their "go to" person, they will look to you for help, for recommendations on advice and products in the niche.

As we often talk about in Internet marketing - "It's not about you - it's all about how you can help your audience." That's why I'm saying you need to ask your subscribers what they want.

Give them what they ask for, both in terms of helpful content on your web site, emails with tips and ideas, and offerings in terms of products and services that will solve their questions/problems. You can either create your own solutions (ebooks, videos, services, etc) or become an affiliate and be paid for your recommendations to the list.

You are there to help, to suggest, to recommend, and to answer questions. You will (hopefully) become their authority in the niche. We always talk about people buying from those they like, know, and trust. That is the position where you're trying to be - the expert that your list knows will help them in the niche. From this position you are postured as the person they should listen to and trust when it comes time to spend money in the niche.

Finally, I would just say, treat your audience and prospects as you would want to be treated. Put yourself in their shoes and you won't stray off the mark.

      Good luck to you.

      Steve

Thanks to all for the advice. I've been reading through the main forum all day, and have come away with a lot of great info.

So here's a follow up question:

In your experience(s), would it be more beneficial to separate the two functions of selling products and selling ads? Meaning, have one blog-type site dedicated to building a list/getting subscribers and selling ad space, but then have a second site that would sell product only?

I guess I'm not quite clear on how one just starts selling products, if that makes sense. Probably a dumb question, but hey, gotta start somewhere...

        Thanks again.
