Explain to me Like I'm 5

I admit it. I'm on information overload on here. All great information, but I'm having a hard time tying it together. There are a lot of moving parts, so what I'm looking for is the basics of selling niche products online.

I've sort of backed away from setting up an authority site at the moment (as I thought I was going to in my last post), and am, at the moment, more interested in selling affiliate products, as this is only supplemental income for now.

I have hosting, a strong technical background, and some money to work with. So...explain to me like I'm 5...what are some solid basic steps/a plan for marketing a niche product. Hopefully this isn't too vague. A simple bullet list would work...

Thank you all in advance.

    Hi ... happy fifth birthday!

Assuming you have chosen an evergreen niche, where money is already being made and with plenty of different affiliate products you can sell and where folks make multiple purchases.

And the first fatal mistake that many affiliate marketers make - and which you should avoid - is to get traffic and then send it to straight the vendor's sales page.

    Nope!

Instead, create a squeeze page and 'lead magnet'. This should be a high quality freebie, that solves a sub-problem in the niche (but not the main problem that your affiliate product will do

For example: in the Acne niche, you could give them a sure fire remedy for the sub-problem of blackheads).

Then, once you have traffic coming to your squeeze page, build a relationship with them, so they see you more as a trusted adviser, rather than a salesperson. Do this by giving more tips (for example, in the Acne niche, tips on healthy eating).

Then after a few trust-building emails, give them an honest review of a product you have bought and tested yourself.

Ideally, this should be a web site on which you can do some work on to hopefully get on the first page of Google.

I've had great success with video reviews of products (ebooks, for example) - which also helps to get to #1 on Google. Although you could do it with screenshots. But the fact that you bought the product should be a major selling point for you.

Then, after some more 'nourishing' free information by email, you offer your list another affiliate product. That way, the folks that didn't buy the first product get another chance to make you money.

Keep doing this and, eventually, you might convert 50% or more of your list members to buyers.

Compare that with the 1-2% (if you're lucky) that you would have got if you simply sent your traffic direct to the vendor's sales page.

There's lots more I could bore you with, but I hope that helps to start to clear info overload fog!

    Warmest regards,

    Paul

Go to a bookstore and buy a basic book on running a small business. Forget the Internet for a little while. After you've absorbed the business stuff think of the Internet as one of many ways to sell products and services.

Business is simple: find a product or service that people want, need and can pay for and deliver it to them with a smile. Treat them with respect, just as you would like to be treated. It's stupid simple.

Once you've got that firmly planted in your brain the Internet marketing stuff will fall into place.

    Hello,

Yes information overload is really a problem, you shouldn't try doing too much things at once. That being said, here is the best way to sell affiliate products:
    - Create a landing page to capture people's email address.
    - Create a valuable free gift that presells the main offer.
    - Create a follow up in your autoresponder providing value to your subscribers.
    - Drive targeted traffic to your landing page.
    - Test and tweak your funnel until you're making a positive ROI.
    - Scale and rinse and repeat.

This is a proven method that should give you an idea about how to make affiliate sales.

    Good luck!

Okay, here's MY opinion. You'll find many Warriors have their own perspective but here's the basics of what I think works best.
    • Set up a website (with your own domain)
    • Design a squeeze page that offers a free product (as long as they submit their email). There are tons of squeeze page templates already out there that you can just Google.
    • Sign up for an autoresponder such as GetResponse and integrate it into your squeeze page
    • Set up an autoresponder series (5-10 emails) that supplement the free gift you gave them
    • Send them to your affiliate link directly in an email where you promote the niche product OR make a post about this product and send your email list to that post
    • Continue to send them useful information in the autoresponder following the product promotion
    • Occasionally send them affiliate links using your autoresponder, but focus on building quality relationships with your list and encourage them to interact with your blog or website

Just a rough setup. Hope it helps!

Either way, you're going to have to buy/create great content. That's fundamental to building traffic. Other than that, you'll want to create dedicated social media accounts and go networking.

One good tip I can give you: promote other people's content more than your own. This may seem counterintuitive, but it's a necessary step in setting yourself up as an authority.

Thanks all. Where does one get the "free gift" that a lot of you mention? I realize it will vary from niche to niche, but perhaps some examples? I know PaulHooper-Kelly mentioned the blackhead remedy as a freebie...can you elaborate?

You make the free gift available in PDF format. Open Office is free and click simple to export into PDF. MS Word, save the file as a PDF. It's just information you put into a small report.

That small report is your opt-in report. That's the free gift people are mentioning. It's the simplest form of a free gift or you could expand to do a podcast, video, or follow up course within your emails.

To deliver it to subscribers, you need an autoresponder. I don't use any myself so I'm not going to recommend. Aweber used to be recommended a lot, but I've heard a bit of a mishap happened causing some marketers to flock to Mailchimp. Only through the grapevine so that's not solid information. Others can chime in here about what's best or tip you on autoresponder providers.

What Andy Fletcher says above, I agree with. The squeeze page btw is only teasers to what your free gift (opt in report) is.

For to use the "blackheads" as an example, you wuold pick on the problem and elaborate on it. Tools to use are either google keyword planner, or ubersuggest.org. That will show the terms people are searching for, then you search online for research and compile your findings into the report.

Blackheads and clogged pores could be the topic of your opt in report, and skin cleansing could be your solution within that report.

Research up on home remedies to get rid of blackheads and create a report with your solutions. The affiliated solution would expand more on the bigger problem of skin embarrassments, cleansing, nutritional foods and vitamins for skin care etc.

The squeeze page is called that because it's (usually) minimalistic content wise. Like this...
Discover the three simple holistic remedies to get rid of blackheads - Even if they're on your back!

Only 3 ingredients needed (and you may already have them in your cupboard)
      • Honey
      • Lemon Juice
      • Vinegar

The techniques are simple to use and you'll never need a prescription cream or skin cleansing lotion again.

This report spells it all out

Pop in your name and email in the box below and it'll be dropped right into your inbox.
My advice would be not to think of your role as a marketer but as an independent researcher. You do the research, compile the reports, blog posts, articles, slide show presentations, or even video to present your information to people, in essence doing their research for them.

The affiliate side of things will/should eventually flow in naturally. Each small piece of information you put out there, the affiliate product you recommend expands on it. Or if it's shippable, like from Amazon, it'll make things easier. i.e an eBook full of nutrition information - (Paleo diet), or a supplement from a retailer like Raspberry Ketones Liquid.

Stop over thinking it and do the following -

    1. Pick a high demand niche. Health, wealth and relationships.
    2. Combine some existing material into your own info product that solves a problem in your chosen market.
    3. Create a squeeze page to give it away. Make some simple, bold claims on the page and tell them they'll get it if they sign up.
    4. Drive traffic to the squeeze page.
4.1 - Write a keyword targeted blog post every day for long tail SEO traffic
4.2 - Post on related forums with a sig link
    5. Setup an autoresponder series that makes a sales pitch to your list every day.
    6. Find ways to reinvest the money from the sales you make into more traffic. Eg FB PPC.

Just do this. Nothing else. For 90 days and you'll have a side income and a list asset.
