Link trading for traffic - a thing of the past?

Back in the day toplists were quite popular. And you could easily find toplist in any niche, join and start getting targeted traffic right away. Depending on the script used this was for traffic and not SEO.

Today blogs have blogrolls but I don't see them being utilized the same way and I never see any linktrade requests here (or other sites I visit).
Is it just me who haven't seen it or is linktrading still something people do?

I would not ever recommend doing an automatic link exchange request with a site. If you are determined to exchange links, then go to a site that is similar but not exact for your niche and make a request of the webmaster to exchange links.

Google says they don't like excessive reciprocal linking that is used to make a site look popular (such as to fool Google into thinking a site has many backlinks). However, they don't say you can't do some reciprocal backlinking.

If you're mostly doing this for traffic and your link is in a good spot on a very popular site and not tucked away on page 100, then it's likely to give you some traffic benefits.
