Upsell questions - how do you decide - 1 time product or recurring

I was just curious what many of you did when upselling. Do you just upsell a more expensive product? What about upselling some type of membership with recurring income?

I think in some instances it can be hard to find something to upsell (especially with recurring income) depending on your original product. What do you do in those situations?

      If your recipe product was and ebook, you could upsell the potential customer to a printed version of your ebook. (A Physical Book)

      Or you could upsell to additional recipes.

      You could upsell to a nook or some kind of reader that had your recipes already installed on it.

      You could upsell to a membership to get a new recipe ever week.

      These are just ideas off the top of my head.

    I usually upsell to give the impression that the normal price is cheap.

    For example i sell my product 1000 dollars. My upsell is 5000 dollars.
