Totally agreed with AJ. Building your brand takes time. But once it is established, it functions like a self sufficient system which drives the traffic on its own. So patience and consistent efforts are the key to creating your brand.
      Good luck with your efforts!!

Do people even read posts...the OP is asking how to build his brand because it is generic!

OP: use your website url as your brand name minus the com part. That works well actually

        It's simple, really.

When they land on the page, the logo/header should not have the generic name. Instead, put the BRAND name. That way, the domain name is simply a domain name but it is actually owned by BRAND name.

        There, that solves that problem.

Now for the next, what do you mean by branding? Do you mean that you want search engines and visitors to look at the website as a brand and not as a generic name?

It's simple: set the TITLE tag to: BRAND NAME KEYWORD

That way, everybody sees the brand name and will go with that.

They are generic brand names ? The reason they have built empires around them is because they are anything but generic.

I am real interested to know how you suggest i study what these internet giants did and follow their marketing strategy.

Why do you think they aren't generic? Generic means that the name does not really tie it to any specific product or service. Just think about it...if you knew nothing about these companies then would you really know right off the bat what product/service a Google, Yahoo or Nike represented?

True enough these companies are Giants now. Unfortunately, there is no blueprint or anything, but if you do research on how they started and how they market their wordmarks in everyday marketing I'm sure you could pick up a tip or 2 if you just sit back and analyze. And it doesn't just have to be these huge popular generic brands, you could analyze up & coming companies who use generic brand names and gain some tips off what's working for them and how their brand comes across to you.

Yes they are Generic. Just because they're unique does not mean they are not generic. In fact, most generic brand names I have see are unique because they tend to be some type of made-up word.

Branding is the best way to promote your website. Peoples should know what "Softsys Hosting" is and what they use to do. If there is a discussion among friends, then whomever have known the brand name, will let you know and advice for same. It is best "word of mouth marketing" and trust me, Guys should be believe more on some branding suggestions like this. Do try your best to promote your brand name, either start blog, SEO or SMM, or create event, collaborate with others.

Branding of your product/services should start within your website, if the onsite branding has proper structure then you can easily create off site branding, however if your onsite branding is poor and too general that's the big problem, most probably you can go on and start your branding through your contents .. blogs/forums/article posting in that way repetition of your brand name could increase. but you also need to know the competition of your brand if its too high and you have a small business then don't expect too much!

Generic Brand Name? so you mean your old brand name is unique?
if that so check your competition on that niche as well as those similar websites that's very important, then try to create your brand far from how they've created their branding structure.

Okay, let me tell you. You are over-thinking this WAY TOO MUCH!.

Brand name matters only when you think 4, 5, a decade down the line. Can you rank your site for your keywords now ? in the first 3 positions ?. Great, put up some social buttons on your site if people like what you provide they will remember you and keep coming back. Even if you have a crappy brand name or no brand name at all, they will remember your website.

When you have a following of good visitors, sit down think hard and long all day about your new cool brand name and redirect your old site to the new one. By then, you will know hopefully how to rank and your brand be recognized in days with all that traffic you'll be receiving.

A cool brand name means nothing if nobody knows about it. Did you know Google was known as "BackRub" first ?, they changed it later. A lot of companies do this everyday once they gain some success. So yeah go rank your site instead of thinking about brand names and all that.

Most modern branding starts with having a customer avatar ... it helped Apple increase sales 39% in 2006 ...

Think of Flo from Progressive Insurance or Uncle Ben ...

Progressive Insurance was "boring" and "generic" before they introduced Flo ... now everyone knows that company through their Customer Avatar, it built their brand much stronger.

Branding just like branding an animal is a way of identifying it .. you need something to be identified by just like the Geico lizard thing...

Hope this gives you some direction.

If your brand is generic no one will care about it.

I've run a few over the years, they rarely get social shares and once the Google traffic dries up it's basically all over.

It's wierd, because the content was just as good as anyone else, even better.

How far are you into your new website build? To late for a quick change of name / brand?

IMHO branded websites now win over EMD's and generics every day of the week

    Hi pororo,

Hope I can help here, but can you clarify what you mean by 'it's brands name is generic' because I think you mean there is a marketplace with others who use whatever it is you are selling in their marketing, like 'hosting' for instance.

That wouldn't make a brand generic, it would mean you don't yet have a brand, a brand is something you build and associate to something in your marketplace, that makes it unique.

Think of all the top trademarked brands and they usually have nothing to do with what they market but the association has been forged in the minds of their prospects and audience that the name of the BRAND is the product or industry it targets.

So you need to come up with a unique name and BRAND it into peoples consciousness, that way it will be the easiest thing to market because it will be completely unique and there will be no competition on the term for your marketing.

There is nothing wrong with using the name of what you are selling in your marketing or domain, but the BRAND is what comes before the product or service, you can then take the BRAND name and add it to other things later.

But as the others have mentioned in the thread, you should then use social media to get the marketing out there, just think BIG from the start and even if you operate in one market right now for what you offer, create a BRAND that can be added to other things later.

    Your Brand Name Hosting
    Your Brand Name Marketing
    Your Brand Name SEO
    Your Brand Name Software
    Your Brand Name Supplements
    Your Brand Name T-Shirts

    I hope this helps.

A brand is built around giving people what they want. You fulfil expectations then they will come back in future. To build a reputation you need to deliver something people want be it a product, information etc. which is what drives the common reply on here that content is king when making niche sites.

In terms of actual branding on the website, I think that's secondary to the content personally.

To build your build from the very start, create a brand building strategy since it is a very long, slow and gradual process and also the right way to proceed.
      1. Website: - Think of the benefits that you would like to get from the website, like queries, subscriber database, customer feedback for your services & products
      2. Try to make the website responsive working on all the platforms be it PC, Tab or mobile.
      3. Get Social now: - Create social media pages representing your brand, link these to the website and make interactive posts out there, try to connect with people and get them talking about your brand, and then tap the queries generated over there.
      4. You can also run Facebook ads.
      5. Get a strong SEO done for your website.
Good luck with your branding !

How can i possibly build its brand name?
Building a brand takes time. Think of a brand as a persons personality. It consists of things such as "looks, clothing, voice, style etc..."

If you have a website it can be part of your brand. Many people think a brand is just the website, but actually it is the whole package.

Where should I start building my Brand?
Start with choosing the right brand colours, who your target market is. Get a website or social media set up. Place valuable content which will reflect how your brand is to your readers.

What kind of website should I find to build my Brand?
Not sure what you are asking for here. To build your brand think of value chain. What gives more value to your customers that gives you a bigger advantage towards your competitors.
