Anybody else miss the "buy me a beer" feature?

Hi All,

The thank you button at the end of each post does the trick I guess but as I was clicking it a day or two ago I thought to myself, "I'd buy that guy a beer if the little mug were available."

Then I remembered how good it felt when the occasional beer would come to me. Ahhh! Refreshing!

Does anyone else miss that feature?

    George,

I wasn't a member to enjoy it but I'm with you: I'd buy some beers almost every single day.

That and some acid pills on the opposite

Yeah, I miss that function as well. Just a buy me a beer button beside the Quote will definitely help to freshen up the warriorforum a bit.

    Hey GW,

Yeah, I miss it too. There's a Mod that Allen can get for this forum. I use it on mine, and it works well. And this Mod even allows for cokes too.
Anyway, I know it would be good for WSOs and thanking people for help.

    Yeah George,

You're not alone. I miss being able to send someone a little special reward for
an outstanding post just to 'make their day' or be a blessing.

The times when I received one too gave a sort of warm and fuzzy feeling also.

They were fun on the wso's too.

Yes, I think that it was a nice touch too.

I'd certainly like to see it brought back.

I saw a Warrior with a "Buy me a beer" link in his signature. Sure enough I clicked on it and it went to Pay Pal with $0.00 to pay.

I've always wanted to be able to do something like that. How's it done?

      Hey Brian,

a couple of people used to sell a couple of different "Buy Me a Beer" scripts that you could put on your server that did the job. I know WordPress has a plugin that serves this function too if that helps you any. Oh, and that VBulletin Mod that I mentioned earlier if you have a VB forum.

Either type of script would work for something like you want. Just set it up, and then put the hyperlink in your sig file.

      Hope this helps ...

Before that post I honestly thought you were a muslim :p

Anyway, the feature was nice, and the possibility of monetary rewards MAY bring some great posts back into the forum - I know that I'd buy Moffat a beer. Not because of the great thread as such, but because his $100 contest added the 'spark' that the WF was missing.

Y'never know - you may even make a full time income from having people buy beers for you

It was nice to be able to give and get.

But, there's something I miss even more than that...

It was that cricket/chirping sound you got everytime you logged on and got a PM. It was like an announcement letting you know you had a small gift waiting for you in your inbox

      Hey Justin,

Although it isn't the same exact sound, you can set your options in your user cp to have a pop up making a noise come up when you get a PM. So miss that gift no more.

Now back to the Buy Me a Beer ...

    George,

I do miss being able to reward excellent posts.

But unlike Doug, I do not miss it as a way to pay for WSOs.

I frequently would not buy a WSO because the wso owner would use that function for payment. Why the hell would you make me buy you a beer, then wait for you to send me a link in an email to download the product I purchased. An email that I had to keep an eye out for until you got around to sending it and that I probably would have to search my spam folder for.

Yeah I know, bumped thread, implied social proof, yada yada yada. That is all well and good. But I'm your customer. Give me the product that you've described. Allow me to obtain it immediately, and I'll then decide whether or not I want to be a member of your sales force. God I hated that "Just by me a beer and I'll send you the download link" in WSOs. Don't miss that at all!

      Thanks for the input Gene,

      I agree and also disagree.

If the buy me a beer feature on a WSO was used badly as you describe I totally agree with you, however...

Some of the most exciting (for me anyway) WSOs were when the buy me a beer feature was used "correctly." (my definition of "correctly" follows)

First way, there was a script that allowed instant delivery of the product.

Second and most exciting for me.

My WSO would go something like this "Buy me a beer, I'll be here 24/7 to see that you get the product right away."

I know Warriors bought purposely at 4am, 2am, etc. my time just to see if I was really up 24/7.

Here is what I would do. I set the WSO up to be paid through a gmail account that was set up only for that purpose. I'd set my gmail notifier to go off when ever a sale came in. I turned my speakers up so the bell would wake me up.

"Ding, Ding, Ding," I would stumble to my PC open the paypal notification of payment, Paste the "thank you message" with a link to the product add "Dear First Name" to the top of the message and press send.

All this would be within a couple of minutes from payments. I still remember some thought I was using a super script and wanted to know what it was.

Of course this is not for everyone and many would think it a bother but I loved it. "Ding, Ding, Ding," Those were the good ol days.

        George,

        I agree and also disagree.

When warriors with the knowledge, experience, and integrity -such as yourself- chose to use the BMB function as their preferred payment method. Then no problem, no worries, no hassles and here's my money.

Unfortunately, for many the use of the BMB function was not a choice but a necessity. They did not have the knowledge or experience to set their payment system up any other way. Nor did they have the knowledge or experience to know that their WSO should not have been offered at all.

My point is that for many of those warriors that should have acquired a bit more seasoning before they offered a WSO, the BMB function was the tool that gave them the ability to offer up their less than adequate WSO in the first place.

IMO this forum should make it more difficult for those with minimal knowledge and experience to offer dreck, not easier.

I understand that gaining the knowledge to offer a WSO without the BMB function takes minimal effort. That the current system does little to weed out those less than stellar WSOs. That part of the learning process for anyone attempting to become an IMer is to recognize crap when they see it, and that newbie warriors frequently have valuable insight to offer.

I suppose my biggest issue with the BMB function being used as the payment method for junk WSOs is that the forum itself became the de facto facilitator for the offering.

Of course one could argue the forum is ipso facto the facilitator of the offering just by the WSO forums very existence.

Oh man, with that last sentence I just argued myself right out of my own position. I hate it when I do that.

Allen, I agree 100% with George. Please bring back the BMB function. Please give us back the ability to financially reward deserving post authors. Please allow us to purchase WSOs via the BMB. We'll separate the wheat from the chaff on are own, and let those that can't chalk their poor purchase decisions up to experience.

Now I'm going to see if I can't find a way to lose a friendly disagreement with someone else. Aah, I think I hear my girlfriend stirring around upstairs. Gotta go...

Hey George, it looks like I missed the party! I wasn't a member when you guys had that feature. Sounds like fun actually, although I can see some drawbacks per some of the posts in this thread.

    Why was it removed anyway?
There must've been a pretty good reason. Right?

Anyway, I did a search and found a couple of similar posts where it was discussed. Forgive me if my info is out of date. Looks like you you guys drank up all the suds before I got here.
