Why am I losing traffic?

From June 9th to the 14th (today), my traffic has dropped from 6,000 unique visitors that day to around 2,000 now. My rankings in the search engines are still there as they should be, although a few popular keywords dropped from rank 1 to 2.

The only other thing I can think of that may have affected it is installing pop-under ads on my website. They only appear once per hour, per unique IP.

Are these ads that much of a turn-off that they could drop my traffic so significantly? Or is it something else that's affecting my traffic flow?

    Hi LegendToBe,

I doubt the pop-unders would do it, although people really hate pops etc. I would be checking your ranking on various Google Data Centers. Just because you can see it doesn't mean that everyone accesses the same Google Data Center as you.

Also check your tracking and make sure that its up and running and you don't have a date filter in place that isn't showing you the most up to date visit data.

Also, is the niche evergreen or is it seasonal? does traffic drop of due to the time of year etc?

Anyway, just a few ideas that I hope helps.

I don't know if it'd be allowed to be posted here, but it's related to Netflix.

I've checked a few different areas for Google, and they all seem to confirm what I've found. Aside from being dropped to result number 2 on google for two of my key words, nothing has changed.

      Could this be it?

Well a drop from 1 to 2 may in fact be the reason for the traffic drop. It really depends on the keywords but research has shown that 53% of searches go to the first ranked site and second only receives 15% of the available clicks.(search engine watch: 53% of Organic Search Clicks Go to First Link [Study] - SEW)

I'm guessing that is the issue.

P.S - Something else to consider is that there may be new google adwords advertisers in that niche and if their copy is fantastic maybe they are extracting a percentage of traffic that would have normally gone to you.

It could be the time of the year, I've seen a decrease in my traffic during the summer because my target audience isn't on the computer as much these days.

I think that you shouldn't be worried about this unless it stays around for longer than 3 months. If you've seen a decrease for that long; I'd check into viewing your site as a visitor.

Use a different browser or computer and try to get the experience of your website as if you didn't own it. Some sites could be slow or lack something, which can turn into many drop offs, exits or a high bounce rate.
