Are people making money from this?

Do people who run huge social media communities. Individuals who run 100k+ Facebook pages, twitter page etc make any money off of it? And if they do, what are they doing to with that huge following to drive some sort of income? Redirecting them to a website with Clickbank or adsense maybe? I just feel that if you're going to have a following that large, you should at least be making money from it, let's be honest, with a following that large, social media almost becomes a full time job.

Most are making good money but not from direct linking with affiliate links. Most send traffic to content on their site which includes optin forms, Adsense, affiliate links, and/or links to their own products.

It probably depends on what the page or profile is for. If its for a product or service -- the social media profile can be a great free way to advertise, connect with customers or expand the brand.

Social Media has become an integral part of earning in IM world nowadays, Driving fans towards CPA offers, your own website with affiliate links brings a lot of traffic and money for your site. Yes, I agree with this much fan following FB page management becomes a full time job but in today's world you can outsource or automate almost everything . There are quite a few softwares out there by using which you can automate the posts with timing as well for your fan page.

It will probably become more than one can handle and outsourcing may be necessary. Bu I don't think every big fanpage is monetized. Some people are not even aware of it.

Yeah It seems that way. Im just wondering because running your own business can get dull after a while, especially when you first start out and don't have much traffic (I have recently launched a new eCommerce shop). Sometimes I just wish I could jump over to a community that I run and interact with people who share the same interests as me. But i dont want to be missing out on any chance to make money.

Ultimately what Im wondering is, So for example, If I were to start a community (Sports, Music Etc,) and generated a large following. Lets say 50k+ minimum, how could I earn maybe a little extra pocket change per month just doing something non-business related that I like to do in my free time?

Depends on the quality of the facebook/twitter followers the person has on their page. 100k uninterested followers is worthless so it really depends.

Yep, I learned that the hard way, a long time ago. Pretty easy to get 100K followers via Fiverr and similar bots...

    There's a million variables.

One of my colleagues has an unfathomably large targeted Facebook following... But doesn't monetize it or do anything with it.

    Millions of variables, indeed.

And remember that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

There are many ways to make money from your followings (provided that it's an engaged audience)

They could be directly advertising to their fans through paid ads, since they are targeted fans, the clicks will be dirt cheap.

Like someone mentioned, sending them to a site that is already monetized.

Otherwise, the least subtle way is to post direct affiliate links.

The people who do this with tonnes and tonnes of pages make a killing with CPM ads, such as Taboola

Making money is easier if you are selling a good product or service. Trying to make money from blogging or social media on its own is like any form of entertainment. Very few people make the big bucks.
