Charity Marketing - What to expect?

I'm on holiday in Cambodia right now and it's pretty depressing to see how many extreme poor people are living here, much worse then Thailand where I live.

So I was thinking about the following:

- adjusting my sales threads saying that 5% of revenue will be donated to people in Cambodia

- visiting Cambodia once a month, rent a motorbike and visit a poor neighbourhood and just give out random cash donations to people that I think need it most, I was thinking about $250 per family or something and take a photo of them holding the cash and publish it on my website as proof

Two reasons really:

1) To increase revenue / grow business faster
2) I like to help as it's pretty disturbing to see kids messing in piles of garbage

I already do some donations here and there but it would be good to do more. Thailand doesn't really need it, minimum wage is about 200 euro here and that's enough to live off, however in Cambodia the average salary is around 50 euro and impossible to live on that.

I was thinking about one time donations of $250 per family, which would allow them to buy a fridge and/or a new mattress, a fan, mosquite nets, clothes, that kind of basic things really which seems to be missing in most houses, if you can even call it a house.

You could say invest in education but that often doesn't work as the kids have to help to bring food on the table so they simply don't have time to go to school so I would really leave it up to the parents how to spend it.

So my question, do you think it would lead to an increase in sales of at least 5%, is there any data available? If it would result in 10% more clients or 20% I would increase the donations as well. I would automatically apply it to all existing revenue/clients as well so I think 5% would be a good starting point.

If you have better ideas to spend the money then suggestions are welcome obvious.

The idea of cash donations comes from Pattaya Street Kids, who take the people on a shopping tour and mostly they end up with the things I listed: clothes/bedding/fans/fridge/food etc.

If you like to make a donation to Pattaya street kids right away you can do it here:

http://pattayastreetkids.homestead.com/

You can also sponsor a kid there for less then $100 year I think, then they can go to school, if you sponsor a kid you can also give them an extra donation on their birthday and one of the free workers will take them shopping to Tesco Lotus and have an ice cream there or something, you can even meet them in Thailand if you wish. One time donations of any amount are also welcome obvious.

I don't know the owners of the charity but they visit Thailand once or twice a year and pay for their own plane tickets and accommodation and such so your money will be well spend. I do know one of the largest sponsors personally who runs a very successful business in Thailand and he wouldn't do it if he didn't have fate in it. Probably one of the very few charities that do use 100% of the donations to help people directly.

That would be a very kind and heartfelt thing for you to do.

Do it so you can feel better by knowing you are contributing to the wellness of others who are in desperate need for it.

I know it might be an ultimate solution to help as much people out as say, Bill Gates, for example....

but it definitely is a start and will motivate you to do more and more along those lines.

It won't change the world indeed but it will help people here and there,

I reached a point where I make more then enough to life a very good lifestyle and although I make way more opposed to 2 years ago I still spend the same per month so I wouldn't know why I need more. Till I saw 6-8 yr old kids walking with huge bags filled with plastic bottles and/or cans and other real young kids messing around in a pile of garbage. Then when I ended the tour at the killing fields (pol pot regime) there were 6 kids, dirty as hell with old clothes or hardly any clothes begging for money, quite shocking. Sure everyone knows about the real poor or see's it on tv now and then but it's quite different when they stand in front of you.

So if I don't need to make more money for myself I can obvious do it for others, need to do something with my time anyway.

That's an awesome initiative from Google!

Will talk with my lawyer what the requirements are to setup a non profit organization in Thailand, might even supply me with a long term visa.
