Warriors, I need your help! Someone just emailed me inquiring on how much would I charge him for an eBook under the "Dating"niche. The material is already available (provided by the client), and all I need to do is rewrite it. The book is about 100k words. This can be covered, as I know how much I would charge him.

BUT here's the deal:

He wanted me to print my work, make 50 copies each. So that's technically 50 books (with paperback cover) all in all and ship it to his country.

My worry is:

Will I be allowed to do that? Won't I be penalized legally for rewriting a book that is not his, put a different author name (provided by client), and ship it to a different country?

My apologies but I am really not sure about this order. There's something inside me saying that there might be something wrong. If I am wrong, then please enlighten me.

    Why would someone request that?

This sounds like a joke or a scam.

    Good luck.

I also don't know. Its my first time to receive such request. Been working in different forums and websites for years offering my service, but this is my first time to receive such request.

I wouldn't ask if I was not skeptical.

Just write the eBook for him. Don't print it as the costs of printing and then sending over those printed copies to him would be a lot of hassle. Plus why should he ask you to print? He should do that in his own country!

That's what I insisted. But he said he wanted someone who will be able to do all the work for him. I don't know if this is a scam or not. If it is, how would he scam me when he is willing to pay 100% upfront?

Offered just the rewriting. Let's see if he'll agree. I am really not confident printing the material and shipping it. I am also not aware of any laws that will hit me by doing that. But like what I said, I know nothing..so I might be missing on something that can get me in trouble.

I'd say stay away from that one. I would never put myself and my company brand in that kind of situation where it can backfire real good and real fast.

    Not a chance.

Two votes for NO. So I guess I know what I should be doing. Thanks for the help!

I don't vote no. You call yourself Global Content Services. Maybe he expects you to know how to do this. It's international business. You need to find out exactly what you have to do to print the books and ship them to him. As for rewriting the content, it's up to you to know the difference between plagiarism and a legit rewrite.

Do the research. Give him a price. If he's actually willing to pay you and follows through with the payment then write the book, get it printed and send the print copies to him. Why are you complicating it? Stuff like this goes on every day. It's called business.

Like what I said, this is my first time to encounter such request. Scared of copyright law.

Of course. The task of rewriting it is easy (not even relevant to my question). All I have to do is use the thoughts inside it, rewrite it in my own words, and give my own personal twist into it. After that, voila! A new ebook is created!

Done. But I only quoted him for a rewrite. My service does not include "printing" only writing and rewriting.

If I knew from the start that the ebook was his own creation and would like to get it rewritten then by all means, I would accept the work without any question. But that's not the story. The ebook is not his, bought it in Amazon, wants me to rewrite it, and produce 50 copies to send overseas. I don't mind printing and shipping. This can be handled.

Maybe I just feel morally wrong and scared of copyright protection (especially when it is all stated in the ebook).

Update: Client agreed with just a rewrite after realizing the risk. Explained the copyright protection law. Glad he listened!

Thanks to all of your replies! I appreciated it.
