6.5 Hours of Video for Product - Download or Membership Site?

Hey guys.
I have been working on a mammoth sized Guitar course for the last 2 and a half years and I am finally ready to release it.

There are well over 100 separate videos with a PDF reference book.

Option 1: My original idea was to just sell it for X amount and have them download it.

Option 2: Customers purchase a 6 month membership for the same price as I would usually sell the course for with streaming only video, no downloads.

What are your opinions on this?

Cheers,

Charlie.

Not a bad idea Garrie, but to start off with I think I definitely don't want to worry about physical stock, if I did do this I would use a fulfillment company to do it. But I don't have the funds to set this up in the beginning.

Use a print on demand company like Kunaki or Amazon.

Ok cool, I'm really starting to think that membership might be the way to go.

What are your guys thoughts on this...

    Billed Quarterly

    Initial payment $47

Then $10 Every 3 months after that?

Does this seem like a good way to do it?

I say membership site with a single payment for the course and unlimited access. Unless you plan on offering a WHOLE LOT of additional content after they've bought the course.

You can do a membership site with the option of a one-time payment or multiple payments, which add up to more.

If it's $1000, for instance, it can be a $1000 one time payment or three payments of $375 each, coming every month for 3 months.

I would vote for a membership site as well. But I would consider with that much content/ videos to make it a site with a monthly payment to earn recurring payments. You can offer also a one time payment (with a little bit discount).

Download Product - Set one time, automate.

Membership site - You need constant update with a little tips here and there to keep the site going, membership site needs to keep alive else would be boring once the hormone level is down. ...If you can provide that, membership site give you a longer term income.

    Wish you success.

I think your first point is right Wargamon, Download product set one time and it is automated.

I have spent over 2 and a half years making sure the content of this thing is awesome, I want to spend all of my time on marketing the thing.

So now I am leaning towards the one off payment download idea again ha.

Thanks for your guys help here.

If I did go for product download, how big would be too big for a download....

Because these files are going to be pretty massive.

Clickbank membership sites pay off big time. I suggest checking out Adam Horwitz's ClickBank University program (affiliated with ClickBank them selves).

They offer all the training you need and even some software/tools to help you build your site/program.

If you build a memebrship site with one time payment you have more options to keep marketing to your members. If you just give them a download then this limits your options.

So i say just build a membership site and add all your content within the site.

I think it depends on how you want to spend your time. If you want to interact with members and keep them active, then do a membership site with both Annual and Monthly payment options.

If spending lots of time interacting with members sounds horrible, then one-time product with downloads all in one go.

You said you want to spend all of your time marketing now, so sounds like the latter option will be better for you!

Memberships can really be labor intensive with having to deal with churn rates/member retention, member issues with logging in, questions, etc.

Congrats on getting your content together! Sounds massive…

    Membership site absolutely.

No need to re-invent the wheel. Find your few top competitors that already have been doing this fo several years and refined their sales funnels. Get into their funnels by submitting your email and checking out their free stuff and how they up sell then imitate. Once you are doing a good job of it do what they have done and get affiliates.

This will NOT be a fast and painless process. Its going to take time (way more than you think) and money and patience. You will come out the other end thinking it was way easier to create the course material than sell it :-)

Of course another alternative if your product is awesome would be to find someone already doing this successfully and simply plug in to their sales channel and split the profits.

I agree with J Bold, membership with one payment or a three time payment. After they become members of your course, you could do some upsell or downsell with them. You could even, ask them to be your affiliates.

    Hi charliemwallace

The best option is to setup your own membership site and sell the online access to your course with no downloads.

In this case you will prevent the hackers from sharing your content all over the internet for free.

    Hi there,

I would definitely go with option 2 over the download option!

Membership sites are great for protecting your content from being shared around for free, as the user needs a login to see the videos.

It also means that if you want to update any part of your program, you can easily change the videos on the membership site at the click of a button. You wouldn't be able to do that if it was a download that's for sure!

    Hope this helps!

As others have said, Amazon offers a DVD fullfillment service.

And while not a recoomendation as I've heard both good and not-so-good, you can also try Udemy.

Also, make sure to create some free video content for Youtube and use it to help promote your offer. In addition to your own videos, be sure to make playlists about relevant topics and add your own video content and promo videos to the playlists.

6-1/2 hours is a lot of content. Divide the course into smaller sections and create a series. Perhaps 3 volumes and offer them as a digital download. Then you have three products instead of one. Offer them as a bundle or use vol 2-3 as back end offers. People might be more willing to bite on the lead offer at a lower price point, then hit them with the back end products. If volume 1 rocks, they'll be back for the others. Just a thought.

I agree with carving it up and selling it as modules for a couple of reasons. One, it gives you a chance to ease people into an amount instead of paying the large amount up front. Two, it reduces large charge backs. if you drop that much training on an individual they may become overwhelmed, not get to it, and then want a refund.

Appreciate the opinions and thoughts, however unfortunately I don't think that dividing it up will really work in this case...

It is divided into 4 main sections but they all tie in to each other and even in the videos I refer to previous ones etc etc.

The first section is the basics, but this is a real quick sort of thing, only here to fill in any gaps that guitar players may have.

Then a section for a exercise workout on the guitar to build the skills necessary to complete the following two parts.

Then I have a big Guitar based music theory section

Then a section with advanced tricks and techniques

Typing it out like that, it does seem like it could be divided easily, however it is designed to be able to be picked up by a guitar player of any level and sort of jump in along where they know up to... If that makes sense haha.

So I definitely think that in this case, it is an all in approach that is needed.

I am going to be developing other courses in the niche as well, for instance an absolute beginners course and different styles. In saying that,a complete beginner could pick this course up and be sweet.

    -----------

I think initially I will just have it as online membership site until everything is running smoothly, then organize a DVD option for members.

Thanks again for all your help and opinions so far

    Option 3?

Split a membership site into 3 sections
    beginners
    intermediates
    shredders

Increase the price for each one, once a beginner can play some 5 bar you can bet your ass they will take the intermediate option.

And don't forget all the extras you can sell to guitarists - strings, picks, plectrums, music books, pedals, capos, bridges, pick-ups, tuners, machine heads, recording hardware/ software etc
bung in some reviews on new/old guitars, amps.

Add-on courses for ear training, fly-sh*t reading etc

      Hey Matt,
Basically I had made my first guitar course in a week, from that I made over 20k spread over 5 years. So I wanted to create the best guitar course I could imagine, didn't expect it to make me this long I must say! haha

I have a list of 5,000 guitarists and will be doing jv's etc for initial promo

Membership site should always be used no matter what product. This allows you to build a community around the product. Then let your members download the files from within the site. Nothing annoys me more than having to login everytime I want to watch or re-watch a video so make sure you let members download them. It will also save you a lot of hosting costs since people only download the videos once.

Don't follow this advice UNLESS you can place a date based delay on the download link that prevents people from joining, downloading everything, and then requesting a refund.

A delay on the download link exposure will prevent this from happening (to a large degree but nothing is 100% fool proof of course)

    Hi,

If you think you can you could try BOTH.

You could sell a beginners course for "X" amount as a single product
and then use that as a taster to then up-sell your membership to them
as they finish the shorter taster course.

I have many products that are stand alone ones and act as tater courses
but many often upgrade to my memberships because they want to learn
more and get access to my more advanced trainings too.

I wouldn't rule out a passive membership income they're are fantastic for
your business and you can literally begin to control how much income you
want to earn each month from them once you put in the effort of getting
them working as a business model at the beginning.

    All the best,
    Gavin

I would go with the membership site, you could maybe extend it by providing more and more info content for the members. Membership sites make A LOT of money and you don't have to have very many people to make money with it.

Membership site but have them pay the full boat up front if possible as recurring billing depends upon the credit cards working for 6 months and they certainly do not.

You can always offer down sell to a more limited membership site if your cart has abandoned cart recovery systems built in and of course, offer an up-sell to a "premier" edition or to add a physical copy in addition to the online access.

Many people will pay quite a bit more to have the DVD's even though it's the exact same content - safe and easy up-sell offer.

I would do both. Offer the membership, then once inside, allow them to stream the videos, or download it to their computer. This is what they really want. On your end, you will need a web hosting provider(s) that can handle all of the file sizes of the videos that you have. But then again... i guess you can use a site like MediaFire. I love them.
