Is this a good idea for an app?

Hi everyone,
I've been having this strange idea for an app lately. So my friends are party animals - every Saturday night we all like to go out - we're under 21 so clubs aren't an option. We go to parties hosted by college kids, highschool kids, you name it.
But lately sometimes we run into a Saturday night where we don't know anyone who's having a party.

I thought, why not make an app to FIND parties around us that are going on right now, or in the future?
We can select themes (highschool, college, masquarade, Band playing, rave, sex orgies [lmao], etc) different information, and click go.

What do you think? Potential?
My only concern is Facebook has something similar with events. BUT, my App could get people who AREN'T on your list, so it's a plus.

Thoughts?

Also you can add the creator of the party, the people who will attend it, etc. and send them messages back and forth, similar to tinder.

    Hi Shellie,

I think is a good idea, it is more important the promotion and the work that you put than the idea itself, but in this case your idea sounds nice, Good luck.

Your idea is very good but you'll need good marketing plan.

Honestly, I think you'd be better off asking your friends whether this is a viable app than asking people here. In my opinion, talking to your users/customers is key to a developing a sucessful business -- and while some of the people here might be your target demographic, I'm guessing most of us aren't. Speaking personally, while your idea certainly seems to have potential, it certainly isn't something I'd want to use personally -- but I'm past the age when I'm looking for parties, so it really doesn't matter what I think.

That said, I do think there are a couple of potential issues with your idea, none of which are insurmountable, but they do need to be addressed:
    1. To be useful, your app needs to have some amount of critical mass using it. It's a classic chicken-and-the-egg problem: why are people gonna use your app if there are no parties listed in it? And how are there going to be parties in it if nobody is using it? One way to approach this problem is to try to saturate a specific geographic area. For instance, is there a local university nearby? You could try to work with greek organizations or other clubs to try to get them to use the app to advertise their events. You'd also get valuable customer feedback this way. That said, there are other marketing strategies you could try, but much more than the technology itself (which is trivial), I think finding users is going to be your biggest hurdle.
    2. What incentive do people have for advertising their events anyway? Do people realy want random people showing up at their parties? Again, talk to potential users to figure out the answers to these questions and adjust your app accordingly.
    3. If the app sounds like it is going to encourage underage drinking, you might face legal issues. You might also have challenges getting your app listed in the various app stores. If you spin it right (maybe call it an "Event finder" instead of a "Party finder", but talk to your users as to what resonates the most with them), I think you should be able to get around these issues, but it's something to keep in mind.

    Good luck!

I think that there is potential there.

You just have to develop the APP and then have people (word of mouth) promote it for you for free to their friends.

I think the big question is will people hosting parties want to publicize them in this way? Some may, especially those with a "come one, come all" mentality and parties that are really commercial events of some kind--but my hunch is a lot of private party-throwers won't. I'd use something like this myself, but only if the events were ones that I couldn't find elsewhere more easily. And I most likely wouldn't pay money for it.

The best way to validate any idea is to talk to the people who would be the best audience for the product--the party-thowers and party-goers themselves. Those of us here on WF may tend to be a little old

Here's a random thought: what about taking a page out of "the Facebook" and add an element of exclusivity? Might be a cool little marketing twist.

Annnnnd 10,000 people just saw your app idea.

The biggest hurdle would be getting party hosts to post their events on your app. What's in it for them?

On the whole, you get what you pay for.

The host wouldn't have to post it. People could. Much like word of mouth parties.

Problem would be limiting it so people can't prank "friends".

You can name it "Party Crasher". I think it would be useful for females. They can get in anywhere. For males however it'll be no good.

I think this app would be pure genius if it were connected to facebook - I just don't know how to publicize it. I don't really even know where to start tbh lol

Great idea! I say go for it. Just make your interface and features unique. It's tough to find a brand new idea and your brand new idea may not even be in demand, so your best bet would be to go for something that is already in high demand, and then make a few unique tweaks. When Facebook started, it was definitely not a fresh idea. There was MySpace and a Million other similar sites. But Zuckerberg knew there was a demand and just figured out how to make his site different and better.

Before going any further, you should have answers to these questions

    1. Target customers: who will buy my products and services, and how will they use it?

    2. Product or service: what attributes does it need to solve the pain?

    3. Pricing: how will it be priced for optimal positioning in the market?

    4. Promotion: what will be the most effective way of promoting it?

    5. Distribution: how will it get to the customers?

    6. Partnering: who else is reaching my customers and who could I partner with?

    7. What barriers do I need to overcome in terms of acceptance in the market, acceptance in the channel, and acceptance ‘in the factory’?

    Simple hypothesis:

    We believe that doing [A]

    for people [B]

    will make outcome [C] happen.

We'll know this when we observe data [D]

    and obtain feedback [E]

After you get those answers, go out to test your hypothesis.

Don't waste your time to make something people don't want.
