Some basic web questions

Hi guys,

I'm in the process of setting up a news web portal and have a few questions that I couldnt really find the answers to (beware: they are very basic!).

1. I plan to initially set up the site free of advertisements, gaining an audience by providing interesting content for free. If I use wordpress initially, can this content later be easily transferred to a more advanced page with advertisements?

2. Is wordpress the best basic site to go with initially? I've seen others like squarespace and such, that seem intuitive and easy.

3. Do ad-blocking programs hinder the ability to gain advertising revenue on a website?

Thanks in advance

    Hi there,

Great to see you are taking action to build your site!
    1. If you are using wordpress as your cms to build your site, then you can easly install plugins to add advertisments to your site. You can add widgets in the sidebar or ads within the content very easily.
    2. Yes if you're new to all this i would suggest wordpress because it's very easy to use, and the vast amount of free plugins give you the ability to create a very nice site even if you don't have any experience at all. And don't forget there is a lot of help online (youtube tutorials for instance) if you have any issue
    3. Yes adblock will decrease your revenue, but that's something you have to deal with. There are "adblock blockers" available but i don't suggest you use that. You want to give you visitors a good experience, and if they choose to use adblock they have the right to do so imo.

    All the best!

    1. Wordpress is extremely versatile. Go with Wp and you can later tweak things to suit your needs without having to learn a lot of tech stuff. You know its important that your platform allows you to make necessary changes without having to learn a lot of tech stuff. The kind of support that wordpress developers offer and also the oveall ease of use of WP tools make it a real champion.

    2. Unless its an e-commerce site, wordpress is the way to go. There are several plugins and themes that can help you make your site intuitive too.

    3. Don't worry about ad blocking stuff. You can't do anything to disable them and in any case not a lot of people use such programs.

I would definitely recommend WordPress. It's great to use for building a website as there are tons of plugins and themes that can allow you to do pretty much anything you want. There is also a HUGE community that can help with any problems or questions you have.

The biggest issue facing WordPress (along with many other things) is security. Be sure to keep your WordPress site safe and backed up. You can get all the details about securing WordPress here: Ultimate Guide to Wordpress Security 2014

    Good luck!

WordPress is a great choice, but it can look a little "cookie cutter," especially to savvy visitors. However, its very affordable and easy compared to setting something up yourself.
