How can I target the US from the UK?

Untill I make enough money to move to the US, I'm stuck in the UK (it's not that bad really
I'm creating my first site and I'm now getting hosting + I already have a .info domain (I think someone snagged my .com whilst doing domain name research!) Anyway...
How do I setup my site to target the US? I don't know if my IP address, my domain address, my hosting address ect.(BOTH-the address I gave and the address of the webhost/domain regisra ect. will make a difference.
Any and all info will be appreciated,
Thanks,

Jell

For starters you can tell google which country you are targeting when you have confirmed site ownership in google webmaster tools.

Do you need to target the US solely? I imagine plenty of people from the UK and elsewhere will still buy products priced in dollars. I'm inclined to cast my net as wide as possible.

I would like to target both although the US is more important. I personally search on google.com unless I'm looking for something UK specific, What ever I'm looking for (info mostly) I find that I have better results searching google.com.

    Hi,

Make sure that your sight is hosted by a US based data center. If it's hosted in the UK or outside the US then you will struggle to rank to in the US search listings. If you don't know where your data center is based this plugin for Firefox will tell you if you enter the domain of one of your existing hosted sites.

    Thanks,

In the circumstances, you need to start by deciding whether you really want to build your business on a dot-info domain-name of which the dot-com version already belongs to someone else. There are some potential downsides. For myself, I honestly wouldn't dream of it. (Others may disagree?).
The strange thing is that I haven't told anyone the domain name, niche or anything. I did however click a couple peoples sig and possibly had something to do with cookies? (It was an IM forum aswell-NOT warrior forum)

I also found similar posts on another forum warning people not to use godaddy for keyword research. (There was a couple of threads)
I can post the link if you want?

Some of the .coms just had landing pages, other .coms in my niche have been around a while.

As for the .info domain, I am taking a different approach to the niche than the .com owner (obviously don't know what the 'landing page person' is going to do) The other thing I took into consideration is that his/her site really isn't very good. I'm not sure that they are even interested in making money, or maybe they are interested in making money but have no first hand knowledge in the niche.

I think .info could be good for example, 'howto.info' must convert quite well.

I think I can genuinely add value to peoples' lives. And that's what I intend to do.
