I want to succeed and I am wiling to work my A$$ off to make it happen

I just can't decide on a direction. Currently, I make a living as a coder and I have been reading and reading and reading everything on the planet on Internet Marketing for years.

I just don't know how to contribute. I feel like an idiot. I feel like the two areas I can offer the most help in are coding and IM but I'm only booksmart on IM and coding is in essence hourly work which defeats the purpose of starting a business.

I feel like I need to use my programming skills to do something but I can't figure out what. I teamed up here with a few other warriors and our site has not achieved any success as of yet and I'm currently spinning my wheels.

I want to run my own show something fierce and I'm wiling to work to make it happen I just don't know where to start. If anyone has advice, ideas, anything I'm all ears.

Thanks for reading.

you need a coach to do things the right way, if you want to make money in im market. with your skills, you can freelance real cheap on odesk or other sites.
if you good and cheap....you will get alot of business
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[9289422].message }}
    • I have freelanced. What's the point? That's hourly work and especially if I'm cheap. Seems silly to give up a great job with a boss or two for less money fewer benefits and a hundred bosses.

      I want a business not a job.

I did not understand what you want help with.

Do you want to start with affiliate marketing and want to learn how to market online? You need to be more specific please.
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[9289435].message }}
    • I'm up for anything. I have played with a few things over the years but nothing has hit. I've made a little money with adsense, clickbank, and a rare affiliate product sale from CJ.com but nothing has ever been anything substantial.

I'm up for anything. I just feel stupid writing stuff because I feel like I'm rehashing information that is already available.

  • There are some interesting answers in this recent thread that might be helpful.

    http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...im-career.html

I'll quote mine here as well:

3 big mistakes I see new people make:

#1. Not knowing exactly where you want to go. (No definite Plan / Destination)
#2. Not knowing how to get there. (No Road map / Tour guide)
#3. Packing a heavy suitcase and going on the IM trip with #1 and #2 as your compass.

Typically coders aren't good marketers, and marketers aren't good coders.

Let me tell you from experience as a coder, a coder that made the conversion to a hybrid coder/marketer...

Now this is only if you want to bring your coding sills to the IM arena. I mean if you want to target problems, and create solutions for those problems.

      If that is the case...

You will find one major hurdle you will have to overcome if you want to create software products for IM verticals. You are not your target market in most cases.

You can look at a problem, and think, heck I would just do this, this and this, and be good to go. So why would I make a solution for it. The solution is already there.

But it isn't really there. You will find you look at it from a different perspective. The solution is there for you, because you already know how to do this, this and this...

Most people you create the products for, won't know those required process steps, won't have the time to learn those steps, or won't have the prior knowledge that allows them to understand those steps in the first place.

So you will have to stop talking yourself out of creating solutions, for those scenarios.

Hopefully that makes sense... That was my biggest problem I had, when I started actually looking at creating software products for this side of the web. The thought process change is very hard to over come.

That is why you see so many people, have huge success in IM without any technical knowledge. They are already thinking much like their target market. At least a lot closer then people that typically come from a technical background, where you can't over analyze enough.

The best way is to keel things simple. There are as you said hundred ways to your first million but spreading yourself too thin is not good.

With that said focus on building your list first.

Start with a host and domain setup along with squeeze page hooked up to your auto responder.

Have a lead magnet/bribe to give away as a tremendous value to your traffic in exchange of their email which will turn them to your lead.

Have the auto responder send your free product like video or ebook.

This free product can be loaded with affiliates you already use and believe in that you will leverage from and monetize with.

Keep building relationship by email marketing properly and keep adding value to your list.

Drive traffic through social or blog and also paid traffic ways. Paid traffic is the best way to scale and gather more leads.

This is just a simple explanation of what I do and what my students do as well to make 1k$ a day days

It does take focus and backbone so if you got the guts go ahead and try yourself and grow

      Your name says it all.

Sometimes it's only after a number of attempts at something . . . anything . . . that we finally are driven to doing something that makes sense for us.

When you have no direction, you need to find some - somewhere.

I would suggest taking a hard look at
      • What you enjoy doing
      • What you're good at doing
      • What other people would say you do better than most others
      • What previous job or hobby experience you have
      • What training or education you have that might give you an edge
      • What life experiences have taught you
      • What personality traits or strong feelings you have
      • What you would do if you could spend all day doing whatever
Taking an honest look at yourself and what has made you the individual you are today will often help you discover some area that will hold your interest and give you a "headstart" online in a business suited to who and what you are.

If you can find something that appeals to you, the next step is to do some market research to determine what kind of demand there might be in the market that you've identified.

Then creating your niche, the space that your business will occupy, is a matter of using your advantage to meet the demand you've identified via a product or service.

Such an approach is much more powerful, and leads to a more solid business, than simply pulling a business model and niche out of the air and saying "I'm going to start a business in such and such a market."

      Good luck to you,

      Steve

You know coding, right? Do you know how to sell yourself? If yes, you should focus on marketing yourself more. If you don't have a marketing plan yet, you should start dominating the freelance sites and also consider listing your services in the warriors for hire section here.

Now, if you are not happy with your niche, IM isn't for you. Harsh, but true - dreamy eyed "wannabe IMers" with "i want something big, but don't know what" sort of goals never make it big.

You have a skill buddy, love it and the money will follow.

    best of luck.

    Hey there,

I know how it feels... you need to grasp the concept of online marketing to better understand what you have to do. But if I were to start all over again, I'll have to start this way:

    1. Follow interesting blogs in the industry.. matthewwoodward is one, yaro starak is another, quicksprout is another one.
    2. Check out what they are doing.
    3. Find your niche
    4. Plan how you are going to monetize your niche (ebook, services, ads, events, affiliate marketing etc)
    5. Create a blog and create a newsletter (always give value)
    6. Choose one marketing strategy (forum, social media, seo, media buys, guest posting)
7, drive traffic to your site
    8. keep on testing and tweaking depending on the results
    9. never give up. come back here in this forum if you have questions.

There are many other ways that you can make money online and many other methods that you can use but this is what I am following right now. I'm pretty sure other members will give out their own methods as well. Just choose one and never give up

I've got some advice. Change the way you represent situations to yourself. Your name for starters. FailFailFail. You are a coder and you're programming yourself for failure. You've put the word fail three times in front of succeed. Ugh.

Look at all the negatives I've identified in your post. More failure programming. Start thinking, speaking and writing success and watch what happens.

And don't tell me it doesn't matter, because it does. Your subconscious believes what you feed it all day long. Start focusing more on winning, success and achievement and you'll begin to see those things in your life. Good luck.

This is my advice to you.

Trust your guts. ( Get a Coach if you want to, but trust your guts. It's your business.)
Don't base your decision on advice who won't deal with the results.
    Believe in yourself.
Failure is a process of Success.
    Don't over complicate things ( Webpage -> Traffic/Promote -> Get Leads -> Sell ).
Take the risk. ( IM like Business is a risk. Without taking risk, you're not in business.)
    Don't believe in hype
Don't make stupid people famous ( so called Gurus )
Listen to what your customer needs.

    That's my advice to you.

If you are really good at coding why not create a blog or website about coding? Teach people how to do things, create value to your readers.

    Offer them products maybe?

Use your skills to create products. If you really have years worth of knowledge, all you need to do is compile it with your own twist.

Find someone you can model and use as reference, someone that you think best relates to you. Study exactly what they do... e.g how they teach, their funnels etc.

If you're willing to put in the hard yards, all that's stopping you is taking the necessary actions to get there.

True Entrepreneurs know what they want and work backwards from there.

I would throw out there that . . .you don't have to hit a home run. Four walks still gets you score my friend.

I would agree with all that you need to map your course, but don't think you have to get it all at once. Most successful people (not just internet marketers) have multiple streams of income. Start by generating ONE . ..even if it is small. Then learn from that and do another . . . hopefully a little better . . . .and another. . . and another.

If one is a home run, great. But either way you are on your way.

What is appealing to you about internet marketing? Do you enjoy coding...or are you looking for a 180-degree turn, if so, what is it about coding that you want out of and what do you want to work toward.

Just asking because it is a pretty radical shift, that said, nothing wrong with radical shifts, I've certainly made some of those in my life on route to building businesses and using internet marketing to market some of them.

Key to getting good advice though is helping people understand what you are trying to get away from and what you would like to work towards and why...then we can help.

I feel like the wisest business model is to work toward passive and recurring income streams. I am deeply in love with the internet. I'm a coder and I can build anything. I have a million and one interests. All of these things combined seem to me to point toward some form of internet marketing endeavor.

It seems to me this "niche" is over played. Maybe not, I don't know.

Damon, I appreciate your input. I'm ok with no home runs, several first bases would be spectacular though. Maybe an RBI here and there?

My most consistent "win" is a site I build 4 years ago that earns a hundred bucks a year very consistently. It used to make it's money off google traffic, but it got slapped, now it makes it's money off Yahoo and Bing. It's a junk site though and it would take alot of those junk sites to earn a living.

In addition, I don't want to rely on adsense for income as I know that account can get the ax anytime for any reason, legit or not.

  • I love to help people. I have mentored coders in the past, professionally and loved it.

I love getting stuff in the mail and have always thought it would be a blast to be shipping things to people that they can not wait to get. Does that make any sense?

I met a guy online once that had a family recipe for a "tonic" that you could put on your dogs feet to help toughen them up. My dog (a big bad american bulldog no less) had sensitive feet and I wanted to find a way to help him.

When I called the guy he explained what he had, asked for my address and said he would ship it right out to me. He never took money??? I said you forgot to get my money. He said "don't worry about it, I'm sending you and invoice with the bottle, pay me whenever you can".

I met another guy online that made motorcycle parts. I wanted to order a kit that modified my carb to allow everything to be adjusted by hand so that you didn't have to have tools to tweak it on the road. He told me the price and said if you are short on money, don't worry about it.

There is a bee keeper near where I live. He has a little stand in his yard where he puts his honey when it's available. He has a box there that you can put your money in when you take the honey. He does business on the honor system.

I'd like to be able to do business like these guys, but internet style if that makes any sense. All of my business doesn't have to be done like that but I'd like to have the option to do it like that at times, or maybe just a portion of my business comes like that.

I've always thought it would be fun to find a way to make money giving stuff away to people. Maybe create a following that just wants free stuff here local. Then I could find businesses that want to advertise so I take a portion of their advertising fees and buy "prizes" that I give away to anyone interested. It's a win win.

I always thought it would be fun to help poor people like this too. Get a following of people that want to help then take donations and fill their needs.

Ofcourse, in the end, it seems like something that utilizes my ability to code makes the most sense. I've been coding for over 30 years and I have coded in over 20 languages. I really like to interact with people though and have been asked in interviews if I've done sales because I don't come across as someone that wants to sit behind a computer all day which is true. I'd love to have a business that allowed me to be out in the world more. I'm not a big fan of sitting in a windowless room all day. Atleast if I'm spending a chunk of my on the computer I'd like to be sitting at a coffee house or my back yard while I work.

I love to work. I'd be bored without it. I just want to forge my own path, be the boss, decide how stuff gets done, rather than making someone else rich through my efforts.

I hope this all makes sense.

At the risk of sounding like a jerk, I think that might be your problem, right there. I suppose there are some for whom success comes in a vacuum. But JV partnerships are the way to compound your efforts into something for which the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

I'm an idea man, myself. But, as they say, ideas are cheap. It's action that made other people rich with your ideas.

    Best o' luck!

      The solution is simple:

      • Research and find an unfilled need in the software niche

      • Use your coding skills to design a software solution

      • Then, learn how to market that solution to your target niche over the internet. You can collaborate and find affiliates to help you market.

This way, you are running your own business marketing your own software product and your product reflect the unique value you provide to the world. This is the ticket to long term riches.

I'm somebody who grew up in tons of computer science nerdy circles.

It's true that many among us just aren't that entrepreneurial, and are too nerdy to develop really unique ideas.

My advice? Forget EVERYTHING, and focus on WHAT YOU WANT TO DO.

    Seriously.

I don't care how fast you run... If you run in the wrong direction you're doomed... Right?

So ask yourself, what do you want to do?

Brainstorm until your objectives are clear.

(How are you going to code that badass app if you don't have any functional requirements? - A metaphorical inquiry; I'm not indicating that you're forced to focus solely upon programming).

You'd be THRILLED with your life, if you were doing XYZ.

    Well... What does XYZ equal?

If your objectives are NOT clear, drop everything else and continue brainstorming on WHAT you want to accomplish.

    Do loop until objections.clear=true

    End if.

Create something you wish existed and then find a partner who shares the same passion to push it out into the world.

This will at least build your network and your confidence which will lead to becoming an entrepreneur.

    You must get started.

The only way to learn to swim is to jump into the pool.

Strategizing, planning, and preparing only build the perceived barrier to entry.

Being able to code is what 99% of online marketers wish they can do. If you can think of something and turn it into an actual product, service, software, application, etc. You're light-years ahead of your peers.

Take 2 weeks and develop a concept that you wish existed.

Then come back here and pitch it to others.

    Now you're an entrepreneur.

Then all you have to do is work on your craft for another 5 years or so and you'll eventually make enough money to support yourself and your family.

There is no elevator to success, you must take the stairs!

Partner up, with a good marketer. Many have done this and keep doing this. Do this, till you get the hang of things.

If you are a halfway decent coder, code things the IM community can use to make sites / gauge competition / gain an edge.

    Here is one idea:
    Updating Proxy Database

Not that hard to code, wrap it in a neat .NET GUI or offer it as SAAS.

Seriously, most tools out there are not that well made.
Look what is offered and how you can add value.

Team up with a good designer and someone who knows how to make user experience work (or work on that yourself)

    Hope that helps.

If I can give you the one piece of advice that helped me the most( and led me to making the most money) was to find a method and stick to it. I know it sounds simple but I know tons of people struggle with picking something and sticking to it. I tried it all(ppc, affiliate, offline ect) and did ok but I never had massive success until I focused on one thing. I unsubscribed from every list except one persons who's business I wanted to emulate. I quit coming here( to easy to get distracted) and only made myself do one thing per day, and I got more done then ever.

You know, a lot of people, myself included, say things like this. "I want to succeed and I'll work my ass off or do whatever it takes, etc." But the truth is, very few people really will do whatever it takes to succeed.

For example, I know deep down inside that in order for my next product launch to succeed, which I desperately NEED to succeed, I should hire a pro copywriter to do the sales page and it'll probably run me a minimum of 2 grand to get one good enough to have a successful launch.

But I've already sunk 10 grand into my business and literally don't have 2 G's to sink into sales copy.

Now if I really meant what I said that I would do whatever it took to make this a success, I would find a way to get that 2 grand. I'd go out and get a job or write articles for $5 a pop until I made the 2 grand or whatever.

But the truth is, I'm not willing to make, what I feel is, a supreme sacrifice to get that money. I'm not going to write articles for $5 a pop. My pride won't let me. I just refuse to do it. And I'll be damned if I'll ever work for a boss again. I've had enough of them.

Point is, when push comes to shove, very few people REALLY will do whatever it takes to be successful. If you're one of them, power to you. You're a rare breed. But you probably want to look deep down inside of yourself to see if you really are. Will you spend the money you need to spend to be successful for starters? That's a big stumbling block for many people, especially when they have no money.

See, I already know that I won't do whatever it takes. Work wise (on my business itself) I'll do anything. But when it comes to money, no, that's the deal breaker for me. If I don't have it, I don't have it and I won't do slave labor to get it.

Almost everybody has their limits as to how far they'll go to achieve success. Those who have no limits, those are the ones who are almost always successful.

This response is not meant to be negative but to get you to do some soul searching to determine if you really will do as you say. If you can honestly answer yes to that question then I have almost no doubt that you will be successful.

For me to some degree, logic supersedes emotion in achieving success.

Take the cliché, 'out of sight out of mind', if you are not there networking, mingling, putting yourself out then you will become invisible; this is a logical and a founding principal.

'Be so good they can not ignore you' said Steve Martin, Cal Newport the MIT professor's entire blog is dedicated to this concept. Again a new principal in this information era. The late Dr Stephen Covey talks about how those who possess 'knowledge' and 'information' will rule in this era in his book '8th Habit'.

Muhammed Hasan of Bangladesh self taught English and PHP and now works for a company from Canada from Bangladesh, he is all over sites like StackOverflow provided answers to questions and answering them; what happened/ he has huge recognition in the coding world and is going places.

This modern age has open up masses of problems that need solving, guess what? solved by programmers?

Google is starting to sell domains via a registrar due to 55% of offline businesses in the US do not have websites. E-commerce will grow and grow, different types of solutions to problems are built everyday for these businesses that do all kind of funky stuff to make a website solve problems from traffic to tracking to conversion to order-fulfilment, the list goes on.

Now the most important part; think strategic!

Got the coding skill - check
Found a problem that needs solving for high profile customers, those who are willing to pay for it - check
Marketing that product to them - check

I have simplified the above, but hope you get the point I am trying to make.

If it will help drop me a PM and I will email you a 45 page workbook I just wrote called 'Clarity of Purpose' - How to achieve Financial Freedom in 10 years or less.

I have distributed only to a small network of family and friends. There is no sales pitch or opt-in within the workbook, it just makes you fill in the blanks to identify that area that you can best utilise your skill and were it is you could make money from. I created mainly for friends and family.

        Good luck!

Think of any skill or knowledge you have (everyone has one). Create a product about it and sell it to your market. You can knock out a product in under 6 hours and the ROI is amazing. If you have no idea where to start consider getting a coach or mentor to help get your first one done, then rinse and repeat.

    All the best

It sounds like you have a ton of knowledge on coding.. have you ever considered creating a coding course and uploading it to Udemy's platform? I make really great money with my products on Udemy and I'm sure you could as well!
