Default Is the name of this site turning people away?

I constantly receive invitations to join social networking sites. I typically delete them as there's only so many memberships I can handle. Plus, the vast majority of such invitations are from people I don't know.

One site, however, continues to pop up. When I get emails about this site I instantly press delete.

Can you guess why? (Australians will know immediately)

The name of the site is MyDailyFlog.com

Today, after all this time and with some trepidation, I decided to visit this site. To my surprise and relief it was not what I was expecting. It's just a regular photo sharing site, a bit like Flickr.

It got me thinking though - how many users (particularly from Australia) is this site missing out on because of its name?

Now, of course, you can't possible account for the connotation of words in different languages/countries. For all I know, our company name might be a swear word in some places. And certainly when people put an 'n' where it's not supposed to be, it may convey the wrong impression.

I don't sweat that stuff and I don't suggest MyDailyFlog does either. However, I will say that if that site does want an Australian audience, they might want to know what people here think when they hear the words 'my daily flog'!!!

(Anyone responding to this: please keep this conversation G rated.)

Over here, to 'flog' something means selling it. Over in America, 'tossing' means throwing something out. Over here, it... doesn't

A flog is like a whip .... you get a flogging = you get a whipping ... (physical or verbal).

Never heard of flog in the Australian sense! Learn something new ....

Still ... flog for a photo-Flickr-like site? Still is weird.

I guess they are doing the play on words ... instead of "photo", it's "foto" ...

foto + blog = flog?

Hmmmm.

In the UK to flog is to beat or to sell.

Flogging the bishop is something else altogether.

You might not like what I say - but I believe it.

Just to confuse people more, nowadays online, a flog = a fake blog.

Ahh the different meanings in different countries.

Here in the States a fist with the thumb sticking up means: "Yes, bravo, great job well done, way cool, I like it"

In other parts of the world you will get punched in the face for giving the thumb up.

I seem to remember General Motors having difficulty selling their car called a "Nova" in Mexico where "no va" means "It doesn't go."

The best names for small businesses are self explanatory(you can infer what the business is all about just by the name) as well as explain what the main benefit is. Eben Pagan's "Double Your Dating" is a good example.

This site's name... I don't think most people would know what flog is so it wouldn't necessarily be a problem. However it is not a particularly brilliant name...

Yes, I think anybody who is interested in doing business in other countries should at the very least do a cursory search for their primary words and meanings in those countries.
When I see things like this it always tells me that they are not really thinking everything through.

I think there's a problem with hundreds of new slang words appearing in each english speaking country each year. So it's difficult to 'future proof' your domain names.

In Australia we also attribute other meanings to 'flog' e.g. to flog someone (whip them) or to flog something (to try to sell something).

But 'my daily flog' has that other connotation that is just sooooo not what that site is about (thankfully).

Remember, Australia was founded under British Rule ...

So this "Flog" has a vast association with sex and corporal punishment ...

LOL, John, that crossed my (temporarily in the gutter!) mind too!

Considering here in the USA, flogging usually means beating or whipping, as Barbara pointed out above, the first thing that crossed my mind with "MyDailyFlog" was that it sounds like some off the wall site for masochists....

But a photo site? Never would have guessed that from the name. Then again, "Flickr" always seemed a strange name to me also.

Just to thicken the plot a little.

Words are not the only problem. The number 4 is unlucky in China so maybe best not to use "Flog4the Day" anywhere although maybe you get away with " U2Flog"

And some countries are sensitive about colours - the Swedes (or the Danes) don't like Blue and gold (yellow) because it is the colours of the flag and I think there is another country that does not like its flag colurs used ( black, red and green).

And what about all those sites you leave instantly because you don't have your sunglasses on...

Yep, there's many a way to offend your visitor - without trying. If only making money was so effortless.

Well, I've gone to the site, and I think it's a "Gen Y" appropriation of the word "to flog". "Gen Y's" may think it's pretty "smart" to call the site mydailyflog.com

This "Gen X" thought, er it's a BDSM or sex site....

Pretty basically set out....
