What do you think of a candidate or applicant for a position in your company / organization, who has a website (private and paid hosting)? Please share your honest opinion!

Well, it really depends. It's a case to case basis.

For me, the most important thing is that the candidate has the skills, experience, and the work ethic. It won't matter as long as he/she can commit to the job.

Let's say a candidate is applying as a web developer and he/she has his/her own site offering web services, is this the point you are trying to put across?

Will it detract from his/her ability to do the job?
Is there a conflict of interest? (Is he/she working for a competitor? A client? A supplier?)
Will their outside activities reflect poorly upon you or your company?

If the answer is "yes" to any of these, I certainly wouldn't hire him/her. On the other hand, if not, I don't see the issue. Hopefully they'll be learning things in their other job that they'll be able to apply to your company.

That said, (and this is especially true for a technical position), you may wish to consider having him/her sign agreements regarding intellectual property rights and disclosure of proprietary business information.

      Good point!

Maybe the OP is afraid that the tools he will be providing will also be used by that candidate in his personal site.

Yeah, you should have a written agreement.

Are you saying you're worried about them focusing on their site as opposed to the team? Or are you saying you think the candidate can use their website to make contributions to the team?

If it's the first, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Consider it a display of their skills and abilities. They're clearly applying because they have an interest in committing to your team. Of course, just keep an eye on how effectively they meet deadlines.

You haven't provided much information on which to base an opinion
one way or another. Why don't you explain what you think the real issue
might be then others can offer an opinion on that?

As it stands I don't think it's any of the company's busines what someone
does on their own timne so long as it doesn't reflect on the company in a
    negative way.

I am with you. You are spot-on with what you have written here. I hope the OP can provide us additional information.
