Question about buying a website

There are plenty of websites for sale and the majority seem to be content based claiming high traffic and good ad sense revenue.

My obvious question is what would stop anyone from basically copying the site in that niche and basically do the same?

Why bother purchasing the site?

Thanks

It happens all the time. The funny thing is the people copying find out the hard way that the revenue and traffic projections of the 'successful site' they are copying are bogus. Kind of like a thief forced to work hard. You don't know whether to laugh at the guy or pity him.

Lesson to the story. Don't rip off other people. Don't be afraid to work hard.

Lets assume that the stats given are accurate ()

I can name you millions of big sites pulling in big numbers of traffic and revenue. How many copies of Facebook are there? Lots probably, why do they fail? Everyone knows and loves that brand. Copying a site doesn't mean that you automatically get the brand behind it.

    Why bother purchasing the site?

    Thanks
If the stats are real and your good at marketing you can take say a $2000 a month site to a $4000 a month site which you know you can achieve. So you purchase it knowing you can make more money from it in the long run at a quicker pace. Remember starting a site from scratch takes a lot of time and effort, some people choose to skip that and grow an already established site.

You can copy the content and theme etc, but not the site authority overnight and of course not the traffic. So, you can get close, but not close enough.

Audiences tend to stick with a brand they like rather than switch to a new one. If you're going to try and start something new, be original.

Age has value (if the traffic is legitimate). If you have some PR and some traffic you've got a car to start driving right now.
