So, I had one of my blogs working just fine then all of a sudden one day it disappeared. I am left with a blank white front page of my website.

So when I tried to open the wp-content folder through FileZilla it said "Failed to retrieve directory listing"

Now, the folder is physically there but I cannot access it. Other files and software outside of the WP install on the domain work perfectly.

What could be the possible issue here?

Have you got a .htaccess file?, if so this may need to be updated.
You said all other pages work ok when you enter them into your browser?

Also it could be the plugin not working right,, might want to do a fresh install see if this works. Let me know how you go.

I have found that white screens are caused by plugins most of the time. Don't do a fresh install, just zip all your plugins up with SSH and then rm -rf (delete) each plugin folder. try your site after deleting each plugin.

i had this happen to me after fiddling around with my files. hostgator restored it from back up and it was never the same so exported all my posts to a new blog and scratched it.

This is weird... I login to my WP theme and there are no themes, no plugins available, nothing that would have anything in the wp-content folder. This tells me my WP blog can't find the wp-content folder.

How does this just up and disappear all of a sudden?

Sounds like something happened with the host. Obviously. Or Hacker.

I suggest you to get in touch with your web hosting provider. Probably they will help you in this issue. Seems like a hacking attempt or viruses in your site.

When you put your site back up, perhaps you should take a serious look at how to securely install Wordpress...

Then pay close attention to each plugin you use... the more you have, the more of a risk you run.

I'd suggest installing Wordpress File Monitor in the future. It will tell you whenever files get changed or deleted. I'd also install some sort of auto backup plugin, makes it easier to restore your site if something bad happens.

It seems to me that your site has been hacked or facing server problem. You may retrieve it from previous back up of your WP blog.

Think like 10 people have said it sounds like a hack. Don't know why it needs to be repeated over and over.
