Can't Make Money With Twitter?

Just got on Twitter about a week ago. I'm amazed by its networking power. I already met a guy who's going to be my business partner on a project that I project will turn into a $5k to $10k income stream in just a few months.

Like a lot of "old school marketers" I resisted Twitter. Only now do I see that it was dumb to not manage a Twitter account starting back about a year ago.

I can totally agree with twitter being chaotic. i log on , and all i see are people selling this and that, and providing service here and there. maybe i made bad choices on the people i follow.

Twitter has been great for my business since i signed up a month ago, sitting at 4600 followers and growing daily.

Don't pay attention to the chaos.

Contact your friends on there, then contact their friends, then contact their friends, then contact their friends.

Pretty soon you'll find yourself amongst a lot of new clicks of marketers.

I'm getting signups when I occasionally send out an offer... but if you look at my page, most of my messages are directly toward other people using @.

Here's an example of how to network on there.

*Send a message like this to connect your friends with your other friends.

    @kevinriley and @jasonanderson meet @joelavery @conniegreen @katebuckjr @lancetamashiro @jituppal @rayjohnson @jamesrivers @leemcintyre

Your friends will start connecting you with their friends.

    ...

One other reason the networking is powerful is because you can hardly keep up with everybody on Skype and e-mail. With Twitter you can send quick messages and keep in touch.

    ...

Whether you're looking to mastermind or form JV deals, Twitter is awesome. You can also get some traffic to your sites at the same time.

I keep waiting for the actual sales proof of how all this Twittering has turned into cold hard cash ... not "friends" ... just cash.

I took a while to come round to using Twitter. When I first signed up I didn't even look at it again for six months or so. Now I am addicted. I love it. If you follow interesting people and stop following people who just spam it can be a great deal of fun. As far as a business tool, I am having a great deal of success in driving quality traffic to my sites and as long as you don't bombard your followers with constant links it is a great way to market

Friends = cash if you turn big business deals. ...Cross promotions, co-create products and co-host classes, co-operate separate businesses, co-host giveaway, co-host webinars and calls... Combining your resources for a JV deal is one of the most powerful things you can do.

That's because you're following the wrong people. All you need to do is click on the spammer's name, go to their page, and unfollow - it's really quite simple. It's what I love about Twitter, I only see who I want to see.

Now, if you're one of those (insert own derogatory word) who goes around following everyone and their pet rat just to get more followers, you deserve what you get.

        Be selective!
Exactly... I'm actually starting to learn from Kevin. I came out of the gate following everyone I could. If you look at Kevin's account, he only follows 250 people, and he can actually read what everyone's Tweeting. Must be nice...

I need to prune my following down to only those I want to see Tweeting.

...Trust me, I used to be the person laughing at Twitter and saying it's dumb. The networking power is incredible.

It's gotten to be like Myspace where people stroke their egos with the number of followers they have. Someone who follows 20,000 people is never going to see your messages. He doesn't even want to. If he did, he wouldn't try to follow 20,000 people. The only reason to be on those people's list is that you can get seen there by other people.

The people who you want following you are the ones who follow only a few people themselves. They'll actually read what you send. That's what I'm talking about here: A Plan for "Soft" Marketing on Twitter

Yes, I have certainly found this to be true. I have two accounts. One with about 80 followers, one with 50-some. I use them sparingly but find that I get a TON of clicks for the number of people who are following. About half the people following will click. Of course, it takes a long time to build a following this way, but I think it's worth it because you don't end up ruining Twitter -- a really cool thing -- with spam.

there is no right or wrong way to use twitter.

you can just post ads if you like but you probably won't get many followers(or sales).

if you intend to use twitter for marketing, your main objective should be to provide useful information and link back to your website, and your website should try to get them onto your mailing list for whatever topic you were tweeting about.(get them to opt-in and follow up)

personally i mostly post links to informative articles, video, blogs, (i don't even own those sites or create the content) i just share them, people like the good content i link too and decide to follow me, many check my profile which has a website that leads directly to *my* external about me page(get's them off of twitter).

my about me page just gives 2-3 paragraphs about me and what i do and then recommends several products/services - almost all of them are free ebooks or butterfly memberhip sites that are free to join - in any event *they look over* what i recommend and join one of my multiple mailing lists or sign up to a site via my affiliate link.

now think about using something like tweet later to schedule tweet per day to content you didn't even create, and having a bunch of people follow you, click over to your about me page, and then pick *what interests them* from your list of recommendations.

i simply post a tweet every other day with something useful, y followers grow since i'm not spamming them with ads, and my profile page redirects them to my about me page on my personal site where they can pick choose and refuse what interests them and join many of my mailing lists in exchange for a freebie offer.

this approach is non-agressive, i share good info, they try to find out more about me, and pick through my recommendations, don't try to sell them anything on twitter

this is just how i like to use it, and it beats bum marketing since i don't have to write a bunch of articles

I don't think ad posts are very effective on Twitter.

I have found that helping people can lead to sales.

Every character in the 140 is searchable.

To find people that need help, go to Twitter Search
and type your topic followed by a question mark.

              ex: Adwords ?

This will return people that have posted a question about Adwords.

If you know the answer or your product/service answers it, you can respond to them and most will at least take a look at your link.

Remember, unless you DM the answer, it will be public and searchable.
This means you can also pickup other people that saw your response.

This method will convert better then just posting an ad and will help you build followers interested in the topics you tweet about.

Well, I can tell you right now I know someone who got a speaking gig through Twitter and made $80k in sales at the event. Twitter is most powerful for connecting with other marketers, then calling them or taking them to Skype. Twitter is just a place to get to know people, so you can begin building business relationships. It's not about Twitter. It's about you networking... and Twitter provides a massive playingfield for it.

Twitter is a gem if you know how to use it.

You get to decide what you want to see in your homepage. If you add people who are mostly promoting their products, you will see only sales tweets.

First, decide what you want to do with twitter. If you want to promote business, you will naturally have to follow more people (and most of them will be business promoters too). If you want to build a community, add only those who tweet useful information, chats with other twitterers, RTs other people's tweets and see to that they don't auto DM a link (mostly affiliate) when you follow them. If they do, you should unfollow them (if you don't want people promoting stuff in your twitter timeline).

    @ken_p and @TheFlash,

I suggest you to unfollow those who tweet only links. It takes time. But once you do this, twitter will be a great place to be.

I like twitter, hope it proves as useful in marketing as most will have you believe. The only pitfall, is to be careful you dont use to many programs to grow your list too quickly, or Twitter management will suspend your account for a month, possibly forever, but no worries just go open another one, yep, they are so stern yet so lax on opening new accounts that if your suspended, go open two more accounts, just in case one gets suspended again...

I came out of the date using software to grow my first 1,500... now I'm just using it to follow those who follow me, and to unfollow those who don't follow me. ...Not using it to mass follow anymore. Now that my account is growing naturally, I'm starting to be more cautious. Still the software is a great time saver for doing this. It's probably reducing time be 20 minutes per day.

I got customers from twitter. I think you must treat is as a networking tool and not like an article directory where you submit content there and hope someone finds it useful. In my opinion you must offer something that is of value for the others there right now. A discount, a freebie etc. Talk about your offers.

I have had amazing results using Twitter.

Spam has started running crazy but I have to say, look at the WSO section and there is a bunch of people that are guilty for selling "how to get 10,000 followers in 24 hrs" or the auto-account makers that are a big reason that those that know how to use it have to weed out the spam.

Just yesterday I had the same auto tool create 20 accounts (numbered 1-20) that kept following me and dming me junk making me take the time to block one account after another.

People would realize that they would get more from the resource if they just took a little while to learn it and understand how to build business relationships.

That's because you're following the wrong people. All you need to do is click on the spammer's name, go to their page, and unfollow - it's really quite simple. It's what I love about Twitter, I only see who I want to see.

      Hello All!

I think Twitter and Facebook should be used to develop relationships and nothing more.

They are perfect for "Attraction Marketing". A good friend of mine tells me...use Twitter and Facebook like you are at a party...meet people, have fun.

When they inquire about what you do, then you send them a link to your business.

All this leading with a link stuff is annoying at best and spamming at worst.

Well, even Twitter is trying to figure out how to make money. Lately, there numbers don't look good... Around 80% of those who create an account don't return. I just don't see the site as very "sticky". It's this summers "fad" -- REM: Squidoo, last summer? Before that SU? I suspect only around 2% of the Twitter accounts actually do something. I hope you guys who are really into it get something out of it.

I took a long time before I gave it a shot, but it's the best thing I've seen since the pre-crackdown days of Craigslist. I ran out and started a Twitter marketing forum (Shameless plug: See my signature link ). Right now I'm trying out a ton of different things to see what works and what doesn't, but so far I've gotten results to some degree from just about everything from blackhat spam to list building. I'm taking my time to get things right and make sure my results are valid but over time I'll be posting about all these things on my forum.

I am interested in converting followers into email subscribers.
What's the technique that would work really well?

Is there anybody here who managed to build a couple of thousands
of email subscribers from twitter followers?

I initially thought Twitter wasn't really a good traffic source, but just a networking tool... however, last night I did a webinar with someone who's generating GOBS of traffic from Twitter. Apparently things like search engines for searching for content on Twitter is rivaling even Google, so a lot of traffic is going out to sites from Twitter.

The way he does it is unique and through using automation. I have the recording of the webinar if you want it. Don't think I can post it here. Just PM me if you want it.

Like a lot of "old school marketers" I resisted Twitter. Only now do I see that it was dumb to not manage a Twitter account starting back about a year ago.

I think you nailed it with "networking power". It's not about SELLING on Twitter, it's about branding, building your name, and networking. Major corporations are starting to use Twitter for those very purposes, and I network with quite a few well known Internet marketers that I couldn't other wise do if it wasn't for Twitter.

Twitter also indirectly brings me clients and business through referrals, RT's and word of mouth. Susan Preston and Ron Davies just recently spoke at Ken McArthurs JV Alert in D.C., and made a huge impact on the marketers there with their presentation. If you really want to learn how to use Twitter the right way, ask them! lol

    @SusanPreston and @RonDavies or @TwitMuscle

For myself, my traffic to my ghostwriting site has increased to almost 3,000 visits per month, and based on the work I have coming in, I am able to support myself and my two boys entirely on my own. Considering that probably at least half of that work comes from Twitter and the friends I have made there, I would say it's a pretty effective marketing tool that has a bit of staying power over the long term, despite all the claims that it's just a fad.

I think that over the long term it's the people who learn to use it the right way that will continue to see results from it, and the folks who just use it to spam will eventually give up, and leave the Twitter playground to us folks that really enjoy it! lol

Just my 2 cents at any rate.

    Regards,
    Cori

Twitter is great for getting people to your web site. I follow everyone too but I'm having a hard time believing people who constantly spam "Twitter traffic machine" are actually making money.
As for those who complain about spamming in general - just unfollow them. For myself personally, if you use an auto-pilot ad tweeter and your avatar shows up more than twice in a row on my timeline then I'm unfollowing you. I've seen people on my timeline 8 or 10 times in a row.
I think Twitter would be a great list-building tool.

Just started to post on Twitter. Steep learning curve but worth the journey I hope.

Listening and learning as I go along. I like the idea of treating it as a big dinner party. Talk to people about anything EXCEPT business until the subject comes up naturally.

I think a lot of people miss the point of Twitter - surely it is better used to tap into the feedback cycle for use as a tool to find out out what people like and don't like about your product or service? If you use it this way then you can learn how to deliver on the services people need and you also can work out pretty quickly is you are getting into something that just won't work. Micro blogging as a direct sales tool is a pretty hard way to gain credibility. No doubt, if you make enough informative posts that are compelling and interesting some people are bound to go to your site but genuine success on Twitter with a captive following as opposed to a massive group of people all trying to sell something to each other is something that can only really be achieved by being a genuine Tweeter. Either that or use it for market intelligence or just goofing off with friends and interest groups.
