How do I start making money from my blog?

Hello experts...I need your feedback.

I have a blog which I have had for about 3 months. Soon, I am going to start another website where I will be selling my ebook. But for now, I want to know what else can I do to make money on my blog? I have put a few affiliate links so far. Do I need to spend $79 on a new theme so that I can customize it and put more ads? Or can I find a free one on Word Press? And should I change the theme anyway? I have gotten good feedback on it so far...Any ideas are welcome and feel free to check out my blog at toxicbeautyblog.com

Thanks in advance!

Howdy, I am not an expert on blogs but I'll tell you what I know. You might want some adsense banners on your blog for one.

Not knowing what platform you have (Blogger/Wordpress) it is difficult to tell you where to place the ad blocks. The Google heat map says it should be in the top left side of a page. Others argue to place an adsense banner between posts.

Keep you blog current and ping it regularly. If you are getting comments that's a good thing. That means you are getting targeted traffic and folks are reading.

There are a lot of affiliate and CPA programs that offer banners and links that you can place on your blog if it relates to you subject matter. You could place a link to Ebay offers, Amazon, Clickbank, Paydot.com and others.

If you have a lot of traffic you might be able to sell adspace on your blog. The possibilities are almost endless if you have the traffic. Traffic = money in this business.

But, that is where a lot of us struggle today and that is getting cheap or no cost traffic. If you have the traffic, you can make money on your blog.

    Hope this helps.

I checked out your "Wordpress" blog and yes you do have some adsense farther back. I didn't check to see how relevant they were but in your case more could be better.

You have a ton of social markers under each blog post and to me that takes up a lot of space that may be used to sell something or better yet, find something to "give away" like a report that is free but, contains affiliate links that the readers have the option of buying from if they want.

Although this is a physical product or system I am sure there has to be associated organic cosmetic content that can be sold along the same lines.

I think your Theme is Ok but it appears you are a little restricted on space. The photos are clean and dramatic. The product choice is a good one.

I think your idea of a full blown website is a good one, then link it to your blog.

All in all, I think you've done a good job. You are #1 in Google search for the name of you blog. Keep it up and keep testing to see what works and what doesn't.

      Cool

First you need to have a good looking site, not some over promotional site, your visitor will take one look and hit back. There is no need to spend money on that, get a simple looking, white background, readable theme with the navigation tabs at the top of your page.
Next, A blog is all about content, good up to date original content. If your content is good, your visitor will turn into a subscriber and then you can sell to him time and again.

Adsense is a great way, also with affiliate links throughout your blog....

I've also noticed that if you write some in depth reviews or posts about some of the products that you actually believe in , you can start making money with your blog!

You need to start with generating a hoard of traffic to your blog. Without the knowledge of how to get traffic (i.e SEO/Social Media) your theme of you affiliate links will make no difference.

So I would spend the $79 on some traffic generation solutions. (Do your research!)

There are tons of free wordpress blogs that are very nice, they will do.

You can put affiliate program banners on your blog and that will generate some income but you have to get the traffic flowing as well.

No do not spend any money on a theme. You can find pretty good ones on the net for free.

    1) Find your niche. This should be the general area you wish to blog in. do keyword research (search around here for info) and Blog in that one area....As you update your blog it will change, you will grow into yourself as a blogger, but you need to have a subject that your blog is about. Don't just blog aimlessly.

    2) set up adsense and clickbank as noted above. Find products in clickbank that are related to your niche.

    3) You must capture email addresses. Go to aweber or getresponse and put a popup email addy capture. I hate it as much as everyone else...but it works...

    4) send a weekly email to your list that simply lists the posts for the previous week, maybe the most read or commented posts, and maybe an article update. Then add some links to some clickbank ads.

    5) update your blog regularly....

    6) now here is a tip that has always helped me to get traffic in a hurry. I call it the "celebrity factor." You want to blog on celebrities in your niche. What will happen here is that you look for the big names in your niche. Then you blog about them or their products or whatever.

    7) Another thing you want to do is blog "how to" information in your niche.

Follow those and you will be on the way....

Adsense is absolutely killer on a good blog. I've pretty much stopped putting CPA links on my blogs - many CPA offers have ECPC's below $1, and there's tons of content network clicks that are worth more than that. Using the Adwords keyword tool gives you a rough idea of what clicks are worth on search, and you can generally expect the clicks earn 25%-50% of search on the content network. I've found brand names and keywords related to active CPA verticals can generate very lucrative clicks.

Most free themes are not well optimized for Adsense. In some of my blogs I use shortcode functions I wrote to include Adsense units with the content.

I've been a member of Amy Bass' Niche Blogger membership site for several months. In fact, there are several of us on the WF who are members.

You could learn a TON of great info from Amy.

She often has it listed in the WSO section. Just do a search on her name and you should be able to find it.

  • Write a business plan and figure out who your customer is... then you can start. I see it a million times over in almost every forum. People make a site then try to figure out how to make money from it. That's totally backwards. You figure out how to make money then you build the site. And that's work, and it's well worth it... because it saves you from the position you are in now... which is not knowing what to do.

In my experiences the best way to generate cash from your blog without an extreme amount of time on your hands is to basically get your content, get your ads and then concentrate on traffic. Make sure you update once in a while.
