Not sure about California law, but in TX, if you're a sole proprietor and you have your surname in the name, you aren't required to file a fictitious name or DBA. Of course, you should consult with your CPA and/or attorney on how to register your business from a tax a legal standpoint.

I'm big on branding your name... You should utilize at least your surname in the business name I think. Especially if you're the head honcho and you'll be out in the field.

Lot's of things come to mind:

Mike Linley Consulting
Linley Consulting
Mike Linley Marketing
Linley Marketing
Mike Linley LLC/Inc./etc.
ML Consulting
ML Marketing
you get the idea...

Many companies are paying big bucks to go back and brand the business with their name. I think it speaks volumes to business owners when you aren't hiding behind a company name.
