Josh Anderson, Could You Answer A Camstudio Question For Me?

Hey Josh,

To record a screen capture, I've tried the Camstudio settings you recommended in this thread...

http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...mstudio-2.html

(I originally asked this question in that thread, but I don't think you saw it.)

Anyway, here's the problem...

If I only record for a few minutes, the .avi file saves correctly and replays well.

But if I record for close to an hour, I get an error message when I stop recording and save the file. The message says "unable to open video file" and then ".avi was not found." And the file is gone.

Any ideas as to what's wrong? I have a Vista 64-bit Ultimate PC with 8 GB RAM and about 640 GB free space remaining on the hard drive. So space shouldn't be a problem... unless it has something to do with virtual memory or something like that.

Also, I'm using the Microsoft Video 1 compressor. The MSU Screen Capture Lossless Codec v1.2 wouldn't install correctly on my PC.

Thanks,
Debbie

    Sorry Debbie...

I don't have that problem myself and cannot replicate it so I don't have much to offer you.

The only thing I can suggest is to try using a different codec and see if that makes it any better... or you might try going to CamStudio - Free Screen Recording Software and posting there on the blog for the community to try and help you out.

You might try capturing your videos in smaller segments.

Thanks, Josh. I'll try your suggestions. I had previously tried Googling the problem, but didn't find any answers. Maybe it's a Vista thing.

    Anyway, thanks again.

I run on vista 32 bit Business without that issue.

    Okay, I'll keep looking.

I did see someone post the same issue I'm having in one of the forums, but his question was never answered.

I have a few different things I'll try before abandoning Camstudio for Camtasia.

*Has a possible answer but you just asked josh*

    What are your system specs?

Its very possible the HD doesnt have the space
and/or the system cant process a file that large.

    Hi Garrie,

I only asked Josh because he posted the original advice. I didn't mean to leave anyone out... my bad.

It's a Vista 64-bit Ultimate (with SP1) PC with 8GB DDR2 800 MHz dual channel SDRAM, 1TB 7200 rpm SATA hard drive (although only about 640 GB remain free), Intel Core 2 Quad processor 2.83 GHz, a 1GB Nvidia GeForce 9800 GT video card, Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium sound card and a bunch of other stuff that probably makes no difference to this problem.

Is there other information that would help?

The only thing I can think of at the moment is that the temporary files folder is crashing with the bigger files. Maybe if I increase virtual memory?

I'll also try different codecs as Josh suggested.

It's hard to believe that space is the problem. There's got to be a setting somewhere that's causing this to crash.

Anyway, thanks for offering to help, Garrie.

Just saw your reply, Marty. I'll try that.

I thought I finally had enough space to do just about anything. So much for that philosophy.

    Thanks,
    Debbie

    Debbie,

The hard drive is big enough.

Try increasing virtual memory and turn hardware acceleration for the video card off/on.
