Want to create mini video series to add to WF

Hi everyone I would like to contribute to the warrior forum by helping others overcome come simple problems by creating mini how to videos.

Have been searching for some ideas and seen a few common problems seems simple to others but difficult to newbies such as problems like how to upload using ftp etc.

So idea is just to come up with list of ideas that I can create mini videos for showing screenshots of how to go about it.

Any thoughts or ideas welcome

Often, videos created by users here, even if they are a tutorial for something are deleted as self promotional, as self promotion is not allowed in the discussion forums, so I don't know if it would be worth the work to do that. There is probably already a link or a video created for just about anything and everything people want to do, so just pointing them to those resources is probably best.

  • If you are thinking about creating how to videos and simply posting them into a thread, you may want to discuss that with the WF admin first. I can't speak for all the mods, but I will venture to guess that based on your new account status, they might be deleted as they may appear promotional especially if you mentioned your site in the video, and or the video is linked to your site, and or YouTube channel, and or....

Edit: sbucciarel above beat me to it.

There are two problems with allowing something like you propose.

First, even if your heart is pure as the driven snow, not everyone's is. If one person is allowed to do something like this, it sets a precedent for the abusers and forum lawyers to latch onto when they dump their crap on the forum.

Second, even if the content is good, this is a discussion forum, not an article directory or video archive. If too many people post "just wanna help" articles and videos (complete with sig or other link drop), the discussion part of discussion forum becomes impossible.

This part of the forum isn't really the place for them, for the reasons mentioned above by Suzanne, Arnold and John.

Here are two ways you might be able to do it, though ...

    (i) Make the videos downloadable, and have them available either in the War Room or even as a free WSO?

(ii) Put the videos up somewhere else (YouTube?) and link to them in your signature-file?

Thanks for that might go down that road then create a YouTube channel and put it in my signature.

Also didn't think about the other comment saying if I post a tutorial is not really a discussion and is a discussion forum good point Thanks.

Can someone give advice as to whether it would be Ok to answer a question with a video? Instead of me creating a tutorial thread.

    I don't think I can ask moderator directly as I can't PM

The question has been answered. Videos are largely seen as self promotional and mods can and do sometimes delete them without taking the time to watch them. You're wasting your time with this direction. The video would have to be completely vanilla if it were to survive at all, no urls, no business or personal name. If you got answers, type them. That's what most do.

Once again, it's a matter of setting a precedent.

I ask a question, you post a video answering the question, it sticks. Pretty soon you have people using one account to post a loaded question, then using another account to "answer" the question with their promotional videos. The forum goes to Hell in a handcart...

In fact, your insistence on trying to find a loophole is exactly the kind of behavior the mods want to avoid. I'm guessing that the tutorial/video would promote a product or service for which you would get paid?

Before you post another "what if" question like this, ask yourself "how easy would this be to abuse". If the answer isn't "it would be impossible to abuse", don't try it.

[And before any of the usual suspects start in on the "marketers complaining about marketing" whinge, the problem isn't marketers marketing, it's doing so in an inappropriate place and time. There are more opportunities for promotion since Freelancer took over than ever.]

Exactly my thoughts when he asked the same question a second time.
