Scarevertising-New Trend of Advertising?

Hi Warriors,

Have you heard about scarevertising? It has been around the net by years but it has been widely used this year. Is this the new trend of advertising now? Is it effective? What are your thoughts about it?

This one's my favorite... Volkswagen Freaks Out a Whole Movie Theater With Devious 'Don't Text and Drive' PSA | Adweek

Imagine if all of those people inside the theater were to get in that freak accident... *shudders* brought me into a state of shock, really. For me I still opt for those ads that are cute and dramatic. I'm that kind of guy.

yeah I watched that clip! It was hilarious! Well, I think it gives people the idea that if it's scary, it is interesting. They want to test their capacity in those type of situation on how would they react. This may or may not be effective, but it surely creates buzz.

Works best in advocacy ads it seems. Can you give me an example that isn't based on advocacy marketing? Would try to come up with better ideas.

The "survival" niche is loaded with it.

Some of the pre Y2K "predictions" made by some of these guys, read like a trailer for Zombieland.

Fear has been used in advertising since forever. I guess I don't understand what's new.different about "Scarevertising." Is there something in particular that defines it as different than other kinds of advertising that use fear as a motivator?

Yeah, it's nothing but a new coined phrase for something that has been going on for years.

Seems that way, but maybe there's more to it? I'm not knocking the term "Scarevertising--I'm legitimately curious.
