If you use WP you can use something like the pixabay plugin to insert public domain/royalty free images.

I don't use WordPress but Pixabay is worth a look: most (not all!) of their images are both free and royalty-free: Pixabay - Free Images

I use a combination of stock images, (but not per image, pricing, thats probably a little more than I want to invest in images) I create my own, but also use a number of online resources, RF memberships where I can obtain access to an image database at a flat rate.

But more often I use text graphics, together with RF content to develop my own style of images.

Good thread, a lot of people do not realize how important it can be to visually communicate with readers.

I rarely use stock photos. I've found some good public use ones under the creative commons search -

CC Search

For products I create I do buy images from Depositphotos: Royalty-Free Stock Photos, Illustrations & Vector Art

I have never bought stock photos. I have borrowed from other people with their permission. Here is a tip,
after writing your post think of objects, scenery, something visual appealing that you have around you that may go good in your particular post.

Grab your cell phone or camera and take the photo. Clean it up in a photo editor and if you are happy with the shot, post it - with blog post.

When you take your own photos you don't have to worry about the creator telling you you can't have the photo on your blog. Even if you bought it on a stock photo site.

One more tip, ask your readers what they thought of the photo and see if they like it or not. If they did you can take that photo and sell it on the stock photo sites.

You get instant benefits by posting it to your blog and make a little extra money by selling personal use rights.

I personally dont ever use stock images (or images at all) on my blog. I suppose mine serves a different purpose than what your's does. But it's a great idea. If you feel like an image(s) will help to increase clicks to your posts and stir up more interaction... then do it.

Free image is not available on all occasions and I wouldn't call it "wasting money" if you know the value of using a stock photo .

Sorry but saying "wasting money" on stock images sounds offensive to me. You mean people who use images from gettyimages are wasting money? What if you really need a photo of Nelson Mandela laughing and you can't find one? Would you steal other people's image from their website because you don't want to "waste money" on stock image? I don't get it....

If you are using stock photos now successfully, then stay on that path. What works for you, might not work for another as some might not have your budget or just might not prefer to go with stock photos.

I use both free stock photos (pinterest) and video (you tube), because people do not like to see dry [TEXT ONLY] body copy. There is even a move toward an animated GIF again. I thought that one was gone. FLASH however is over. Make your content more sticky and get more views.

In-fact a large portion of the photos on Pinterest are pirated in the first place. Secondarily, Creative Commons photos pinned from Flickr are pinned with linkbacks and attributions which adhere to the CC license terms.

All in all, the best (and the easiest solution) would be to use your own images as much as you can and attribute when using other people's photos. It's easier now to take photos on your phone, edit them, and post them in your blog.

Yes, but not all the time. See my post above. You can't create a photo of other people unless you do a caricature and it is not applicable in some cases.

Hi Adie, google the public domain images. You will find some royal free images sites. You still have to buy some images but if you use combination of both your cost will go down for sure.

Never really. These days I only use my travel photos. When I used stocks I always went with freedigitalphotos.net. Solid stocks, nice selection, easy to download.

Spending one or two dollars is not a lot of money, especially considering how much everything else in marketing costs. It seems like a fair offer for a rare photograph, as you said you might not be able to find otherwise.

Getty Images allows a lot of their images to be embedded in webpages as well. The code for embedding the image is available on their site. I've used their images occasionally on a personal blog of mine when I couldn't find any other suitable images.
