What In The World Did I Just Do - Again!? (Dumb!)

Okay, I'm updating my "To-Do" list of things that I plan to accomplish just yesterday. I got one knocked out and I'm partway through a second task. I got some great advice from a few experts here last week and I'm totally focused on my goals.

Fast forward to earlier today. I'm reading an email from a well known marketer who I've bought several things from in the past. Of course, I go into this having no intention of buying anything. This guy gives away great information sometimes, so I figured I should probably open it to see what's up. It'll only take a minute, right?

Wrong!

The next thing I know I've bought another product, got about a half dozen freebie bonuses, there's crap all over my desktop (again) and I have a brand new Paypal receipt to add to my 2014 collection.

I'm NOT happy with myself! It's not the marketer's fault, though. His email did exactly what it was supposed to do - get the click. I'm not going to ask for a refund. The product(s) are top notch.

My issue is that I did it AGAIN and even though the products are high quality, they're NOT part of my battle plan.

As a result, I just went through every email and either unsubscribed or redirected them to a different email inbox where they won't be in my face every day.

I also created a handful of files and completely cleared my desktop of almost everything that's not directly related to what I'm trying to accomplish. It feels liberating, but I'm not done yet. There are more unsubscribes to be done.

Anyhoo...there's no one to blame but myself. Hopefully someone else will read this and not jump on the next BSO (Bright, Shiny, Object).

Withdraw all your money from your PayPal account so you can't pay for things you don't need. If you have to fund your account, it may stop you jumping every time.

      Joe,

      Seek therapy.

There is hope for Joe. Take two aspirin and don't call me in the morning.

        Oh, no! Not another one!

The first step to recovery is admitting that you have a problem, right? LOL

You paid for something more precious than whatever you originally intended. The realization that you're wasting money.

Make the BEST use of your mistake.

    And don't make it again.

Probably the best thing you could have done.

This may sound weird, but when I sit down to work I have a little rubber band on my desk that I put on my wrist. Any time I catch myself procrastinating, making excuses instead of taking action, looking at shiny objects, etc., I pull it back and snap so it stings. Helps me condition myself to stay focused.

There's nothing weird about it. If it works, it works.

So, the marketer proved once again to you that he really is a good marketer, huh? Why are you unhappy? It's okay to let yourself run loose and not listen to your heart and not mind sometimes.

I always buy things I presume are interesting (BSO) and the repentance from it pushes me to work harder.

Lol, you have the classic symptoms of "Shiny Object Syndrome"

Emptying your Paypal account won't stop you from buying. What's helped me in the past, was to stop reading the emails, and stay away from WSO section. I don't even remember the last time I clicked on a WSO or read a promotional email.

I have nothing against shiny bright objects or people promoting to me, but I did it to keep myself from buying everything. I did the same thing with smoking cigarettes, I quit cold turkey

like said above, remove the money from your paypal account. Another ''solution'' is that whenever you are going to buy anything, write it down, break it to pros and cons , see if you actually need it and if that fills any requirements you have on your first goals

Honestly man, it's not going to do any good for anyone to give you advice because the decision has to come completely from within.

...yet I'm being a hypocrite by chiming in. Anyway..

You need a defense mechanism. Think of something powerful that you can remind yourself with or motivate yourself with every time you are tempted to buy something you don't need, use your defense mechanism.

If necessary, you can find a substitute too. You know a lot of the time there really ISN'T much difference between a Paid WSO and Free WSO right? For instance I was told by someone very reputable that I should have charged $7 for the Free WSO in my signature. So if you NEED something new, there are a lot of "shiny FREE products" with just as much value. Grab some of those if you must, review them if you want, but at the end of the day make sure you've established the ONE method you are going to commit to and it's up to you to stay on track but you won't be successful until you do.

On a side note, I'm kinda jealous of the marketer you discuss in the OP though! It sounds like you mostly just buy from him, which means he must be very effective with "dressing" his products and/or using triggers. I can also guarantee he's got a lot of customers in the same boat as you: HOOKED.

But at the end of the day, you have to give yourself reason to want to address your problem and nobody - no matter how great the advice - will be able to genuinely commit YOU to something but YOU. No different from the cigarette smoker.

It's time to stop being a student and start running a business. How much money do you need to make each month? How much do you need to run your business and how much do you need to survive? How much do you need for incidentals?

Once you figure this out, start coming up with a plan to achive it! If you create a product, how many product sales will it take to hit your numbers? Then, start working on a strategy to get the sales. That's how a business works.

You've been around this forum as long as I have. I doubt you really need too much schooling on Internet Marketing. Just focus on the business and making it happen.

You'll probably need to do some self analysis of your thoughts.

    ex:

slow down and read the sales letter again. this time read it as the seller of the information product. Think that your objective is to turn something simple into something complicated by triggering your readers emotions a dozen different ways to get the reader YOU towards the desired action and click buy now.

Instead of daydreaming of the riches you will discover after buying their product. that is what they are selling you after all... hope, desire, etc..

thy to figure out why the heck you bought it, and think about that point in your thought. once you find out what triggered you emotionally towards buying you may notice that in other situations and stop yourself in thought before you keep heading in the direction of BUY

Sounds like you've got it sorted now. I have been through a similar process and have been more productive. I set a number of goals and made a list of where I need to spend my money/what I need to buy when I achieve these goals e.g. achieving goal 3 means I will then need to buy X to get to goal 4.

    "BSO" I like it.

    Mark.

    I did this long ago. Now the only "marketers" who email me are spamers. (;

    Common problem.

Since I use Gmail's tabs, and there are promotions I want to get (non-IM - local businesses and such), I'm in the process of relegating marketers' lists to their own tab so they're not in my face all the time.

I'm pretty much immune to the emails themselves, but it does help with the clutter.
