Targeting a profitable niche - question

Hi there.

I'm up to start an online information business and I'm in the process of finding and targeting a niche.

I've been through some Eben Pagan's (an Internet marketing expert) materials and there is said that in order to target a profitable niche 4 components need to be right in place.

1. Does the customer experience pain or urgency to solve its problem?
2. Is the customer pro-actively looking for solution to his problem ?
3. Does the customer has few or no other perceived options ?
4. Are there at least 1 in 1000 people that fit in the group of my prospective customer ?

So my concern in for the last two.

How do you figure out if there are few or no other option on the market for the current problem. Does not having a book on the topic is enough to indicate that there is potential for an unmet niche? What other tactics could be allied to figure this out ?

And how do you figure out if there are at least 1 in 1000 people that fit for the niche ?

I do Google Keywords research with the keyword planner to see how much people look for the problem they have. but I don't know if lets say 1900 people have looked for this month
for "natural stress relief" is that enough so an product be created around that.
(note this is just an example)

What other methods do you use to determine that the niche will be profitable and the need exists in enough customers that are able to pay?

cheers.

You really have to test market. Do it cheaply, but use enough of a sample to ensure your results are meaningful. If you've done your qualifying research and think it could work, this is your next step.

Regarding #3. If you do a Google search, a YouTube search and an Amazon search and don't find someone offering the solution - that should give you your answer.

Regarding #4. It's hard for me to give you a specific answer because I don't know who your prospective customer is. Is it people who want to save money? Your probably in.

Or is it people whose searching for Chinese Tiger Sculptures created during the Ming dynasty? Hmm, maybe, maybe not.

Do you think Google Youtube and Amazon search is enough ?

In my opinion if don't find anything on the subject on those three even 100 per month searches on Google might be enough to create a product. But thats just in case these 100 are extremely targeted and able to pay.

I think Google, YouTube and Amazon searches is enough to answer your question so you can get started. Be careful of paralysis of analysis. Over analyzing and not taking action.

The main thing is making sure whatever number searches you find, determine are those searchers buyers or information seekers, big difference.

I'm curious how did he come up with the 1 in 1000 ratio? Did he give a reason?
Seems it would depend on your market and how you approach it. I can think of examples where the numbers wider and closer than the one in 1000. I imagine most people could if they thought about it.

I wouldn't imagine 1 in 1000 people like to participate in cage fighting, but it's a big industry. Or one in a thousand people like to go to foreign countries to pick up women, but its a huge industry. I could give many more examples.

That's why I wouldn't take that number as a hard rule written in stone.

Personally my number 4 would be ...

          4. Do you have a passion for the niche or are you able to persist with it until you succeed.

I don't think it is realistic to have a product with zero competition. There are always a thousand options to every problem, the key is marketing, getting yours in front of more people. So, I definitely wouldn't go out looking for a product that is 100% unique. If there's no competition, there's no market for it because no one is looking for it!

That kind of ties in to the second question about making sure there's at least 1-1000 people in the niche. I can't think of a single product that will not have that tiny of an audience. Again, that's not really a concern.

    Hope I helped!
