"Am I Cut Out For Internet Marketing?" (See if you relate to this)

I've been involved in the IM industry for about 5 years now. I've dabbled in a number of things and have had some mild successes. This includes growing a site to over 1000 visitors per day, getting over 1500 subscribers on one list, making a few hundred in profit with affiliate marketing, etc.

But the thing is... I'm coming at a crossroads and I've been asking myself if IM is really for me. See if you can relate to my story below.

Despite some of my mild successes, it's never been that consistent. While I got over 1000 visitors per day with one site, Google's algorithm change affected it that I'm now only getting 200 visitors per day. And it's on a topic I don't particularly care for nor am I passionate about. I'm working on 2 other sites but it's such a pain to start from scratch again.

As far as affiliate marketing goes, I've never been able to be consistent with my results. While I've gotten numerous sales, it's been inconsistent. Plus, there are so many technical things that has to be done (setting up tracking, hosting, etc) that aren't my strong suit so I wonder if it's worth all the effort.

Furthermore, I'm more of an extrovert and love being around people. I feel the idea of IM is more for introverts or maybe those who aren't as sociable (sorry if this offends anybody but it's kinda true). I do like the idea of developing relationships with others in your industry via email and Skype, but for some reason this seems a bit unnatural to me and besides, how do you really (I mean, really) develop a relationship that's virtual-based?

The reason I got into IM is the possibility (and idea) of being able to generate passive income with my sites. I see success stories such as Ramit Sethi, Mike Geary, etc and I'd like to be able to do that as well. But then again I've been known to idealize things and not be able to see things for what they really are. Perhaps that's what I'm doing here.

The reason I'm doubting my ability to make it in IM is because there are so many technical and analytical pieces (keyword research, making sure the anchor links are proper, make sure to have breadcrumb URLs, SEO, CTR's etc) which aren't my strong suits that I wonder if I'm barking up the wrong tree.

Since I'm talking about my strengths, I'm considering getting back into sales since I'm more of a person-to-person type and from that I'm looking to invest my money in other businesses (most likely offline) and real estate. Figured sales is a great way to network with others and it helps to create other opportunities (now I'm just more talking out loud as I'm writing more than anything else).

I've probably ranted enough. Has anyone else experienced the same thing I'm going through? Can anyone else relate to this? Am I wasting my time with IM?

Any thoughts, candid feedback or sharing of your story is welcome.

It seems like SEO, in particular, is discouraging to you. And you're right, when Google changes things around it can be devastating for you and your websites. Have you thought about product creation at all? Not so much SEO and might be a little more exciting for you?

The real issue which I can see is your own mental blocks which you have created for yourself.

Just read your words yourself once again....And you can easily see that you have tagged yourself as a not suitable person...saying extroverts can not be a good Internet Marketer....May be you are right...

But the issue is not that extrovert or introverts are good for IM.....The issue is....At least what I can see here is your own thoughts about these things.

Even though I do not suggest anything to anyone ...But as you asking....I would suggest you to join a real world marketing job...

Well, considering that you've been at it for 5 years with limited success i would say pack it in. Do you want to waist more time pursuing something that's not working for you? Although many will disagree IM is not for everyone...

Many will spend years chasing a dream that simply will not materialize for them...
I'm just wondering if you are truly interested in "candid feedback" or is this another one of those "I'm about to give up, boost my ego and tell me everything is going to be OK threads"? ...

It's interesting you mentioned you're an extrovert. I'm an introvert and do okay, but there are definitely IM models suited for extroverts. One model that would work for you is to focus on list building and developing relationships with people in your niche and merchants. I do this, but I'm not terribly good at it... I'm more of a lone wolf.

You can do webinars and sell products. Use your relationships to promote your webinars.

I'm in the process of setting up my first webinar and it's a lot of chatting with co-contributors and partners. It's working out fine, but I'm definitely a lone wolf. An extrovert can really run with this.

I've created a number of e-products (ebooks) and each of them have flopped for the most part. I made a few sales but nothing to ride home about. Then again it was because I didn't know what my marketed wants and just launched anyways.

That's great you're creating a webinar and it's coming together. I'm curious to know how are list building and doing webinars good for extroverts? Still seems like everything is done virtually.

Then again as one reader mentioned above, it seems I have more mental blocks than anything else.

The fact that you are engaging with other Warrior members aren't you building relationships?

What exactly are you doing with your list?

Engage with your list and watch your sales go through the roof.

I think you have made your conclusion, IM irritates you, it demands consistent action and planning, you can't just put up a couple of websites, an affiliate offer or two and think you have it covered -to build a business you need a central core , you have to consistently build on that and develop a large 'empire' covering different topics, niches - this then generates multiple streams of revenue which can add up to a tidy sum, but consistently. I would say your personality is probably not ideally suited to the style of online biz you describe - but anything you do is only as good as what you put into it - no magic fairy dust is going to make your IM produce. Go with your inner voice and do what you know you want to do - no one is going to judge you for it!

After reading your post, I think is your mental block that stopping you. Because if you don't like or hate IM, you won't be doing it for 5 years.

Try outsource the things that you don't like and do what you like. And focus on the correct goal. I know the seo and other technical thing is not for everyone and can be boring. But focus on the correct thing which is building your email listing that really brings in money.

When I just started my IM journey 4 years ago, I really hate doing seo and article writing. Now I started working in society, I make use of the income I earn and invest in whatever that help me build my email list. Email list is equal to your money. And there are ton of methods to build it. You can even buy solo ads or paid traffic to your site to build it faster.

Give yourself maybe another few months. You already half way there, why give up now?

I don't know if I'd consider myself half way there. It's like I'm starting over (slightly). But you're right, I will change my attitude about it bc I can look at it from another lense. I get to start over again and the slate is clean. I'll give one or two more projects a chance and see where that goes.

Maybe I should release my expectations of making it big and just have fun w the message I'm looking to spread.
