Best website money making ideas for $2000?

Here's the situation. I've been given a bit of money from my mother $2000, to create a website(s) to generate a bit of income. She also gave me the money because she knows I've had a number of website ideas over the years, but hadn't had the funds to get them going, so she wants to help with that as well.

My initial idea was to setup a website which I've wanted to do for years which is a digital games store similar to indiegamestand.com but after looking into the development costs it seems it's going to cost too much.

So I've been looking around for other ideas. Something that seems a money maker are dating websites. I know of course that sector is completely saturated, but I keep reading how there's still money to be made. So here's my questions...
  1. Is it still worth creating dating websites?
  2. If it is worth making dating websites, is it better to concentrate on one website? or try to have a number of them?
  3. Everyone says make your dating website niche, but all the niches seem to be taken, is it worth going for a small niche?
  4. What are the single most important aspects of promoting a dating website? is it all about getting the attractive people on there? how important is SEO? Is it worth spending money on a SEO expert to handle that side of things?
  5. Is it worth spending money on ads on other sites to advertise the dating websites?
  6. Are the dating websites just a bad idea for the $2000, and there are better website ideas to generate an income?

Thanks for any advice!

You're starting in the wrong place - on the supply side (what you're going to offer).

Begin with understanding the demand side, i.e. what is the market asking for specifically?

Learn to do market research on the dating environment and then you will recognize and understand what type of dating business that market is asking for right now.

In the beginning, focus on the demand and not what you're going to supply to meet that demand.

    The best to you.

The dating niche is a competitive one if you don't know what you are doing - it's not a niche I'd embark on if I was new to marketing.

If I were you I'd start with a simple affiliate review site, possibly Amazon. Spend no more than $300 on content and backlinks (there's no point in wasting any more of your money until you know you can build a successful website).

Keep working on that site until it's making a few hundred dollars per month. Sell it on Empire Flippers for x20 the monthly income, and then use your new found knowledge and earnings to expand your business. You can then build more similar sites or try your dating site etc.

I suggest you do a lot more research before you make any decisions. I think you can find a much easier way in then creating yet another dating site.

I would say offline marketing and paid advertising are really two great areas that many people I know are doing quite well with. Too much BS out there with article marketing, twitter, seo, amazon affiliate, selling domains, blah blah blah.

Yes I use some of those I mentioned but they don't really pay the bills like my main business. =D

I've seen this mentioned over the years but what do you mean by affiliate review site? you mean just a basic wordpress page, with some content reviewing something, and then how would you promote it? where would you spend the $300 on backlinks etc? and how long would it be before it's earning a few hundred $$ per month?

        Biggerplay,

Sometimes when starting out, it's helpful to capitalize on any advantages you may have in a market. By advantages I'm talking about any specific education, training, past experience, interests, or abilities you may have that might give you an edge over other business owners.

If there is something that sets you apart in a particular field, you might think about using that talent to teach what you know to other people. It's no secret that people go online to learn, to grow, and to develop their interests. If you can position yourself as an expert in some field or discipline, you can gather a following, an audience, and be paid to share what you know with them.

The "sharing" could be in the form of a product you create (and sell), a community you set up (membership), a book you write (Kindle) or even as a trusted guide (affiliate) to help your audience understand what is needed in that discipline.

Inventory your talents, skills, and interests to see if there's something about you that will help you to be seen as an expert. What would your family and friends say you're very good at?

Once you identify where you might have an advantage over others . . . that can be the starting place for your market research . . . to see if others are asking for help/assistance/guidance in that thing (whatever it is). By doing some research, you will begin to understand what the market is asking for and where you might sell into that demand.

Too many entrepreneurs create a product (or web site) hoping to generate some kind of excitement and demand for it. That typically fails miserably.

Now here's an extremely valuable tip that can make you wealthy: It's much smarter to research the market and see where demand already exists and then sell into that demand with a targeted product that satisfies the demand exactly.

Good luck as you move forward.

Great question. Dating sites do in fact sell very well just as most markets do. There is no such thing as over saturated because the make money online niche has been making bank for thousands of successful affiliates since the beginning and the IM niche is by far the most so-called "over saturated" niche of them all.

Secondly, paid advertising methods like PPC are super effective in making conversions. You just have to make sure that your keywords are targeted to the offer you are promoting and you MUST have a squeeze page to send that traffic to in order to maximize conversions.

What do you mean by "squeeze" page? wouldn't that just be the front page of the dating site?

Also would you recommend google for the PPC side of things?

(I know you weren't asking me ). "Review sites" are a very poor method of making affiliate sales, these days.

You have a huge learning curve ahead of you, getting to terms with "what makes affiliate sales". The gist, in so far as it can be expressed in a sentence or two, is that what makes affiliate sales is the trust that your traffic has in you, and in the strength of your recommendations, because of the continuity-based relationships that you've built with them, typically by email. It will help you enormously to get out of your frame of reference of "websites making sales" and into a frame of reference of "relationships making sales".

It will help you enormously to stop thinking in terms of search-engine traffic, as well.

Your posts are full of "MUST" and "ONLY" and - once again - you're just plain wrong. You meant to say "opt-in page", not "squeeze-page, probably. Not all opt-in pages are squeeze pages. Many people who have split-tested carefully for themselves choose not to build their lists from squeeze-pages, but from other types of opt-in pages. There are options. It isn't correct at all to say that you "MUST" have a squeeze page.

I would suggest to go and analyze a sub niche of the niche dating, because most of the people use to target master niche we still have hope to create sub niche of these highly competitive niches.

You can consider after marriage dating, old age dating or same sex dating because these are niches where still a big gap to be filled.

But do a deep research before applying your ideas and the money you got from your mother, good luck.

The reason you wonder about that is that you're instinctively looking at marketing in quantitative terms, instead of qualitatively. The reality is that "how well targeted and specific the site is to the visitors" is overwhelmingly more important than "how many visitors there are."

Reading a lot of comments in this, yes do your research first as this is a key part, if not the main part of the whole process to creating an online business. I would suggest making it unique to yourself, what are your hobbies and interests - Focus in that niche, because then you know what you're talking about when writing on the website, and also you won't lose interest, it's far to easy to create a website on something like dating, but if the topic bores you after a few months then you won't have the drive to see it through.

Choose a hobby or interest, get some keyword research done and analyse all the data, focus your website around that. Provide content, build up an authority, build up a user base then start using ads and selling to them to monetize the website.

    Key advice, don't give up!

I actually am interested in the social science behind dating sites, why people use them, how they use them etc.

I would love to have a online game store, but like I said, it's just going to cost too much to set it all up ($3000+).

Well it's real simple why people use dating sites. It's because they desire a relationship of some sort - and online dating provides them with another way, and a convenient way, to connect meet people the type of mate(s) they want to meet. Many people are busy, shy, or whatever and they feel more comfortable"prospecting" for a potential relationship online instead of in person.

Hey here's an idea! Being that you like gaming and you're interested in online dating ... why not make a dating site for Gamers. After all, it's true that many gamers are introverts glued to their computers all day or for hours & hours a day - so online dating for gamers would be a good way for them to meet a mate that shares the same interest. There are tons of men and women gamers alike and hey - Gamers need love too!

First of all...I suggest that you avoid spending one single dime of that $2000 until you have a focused plan of action. The truth of the matter is that you are not ready to set up a website to sell anything because you don't know anything about the basics of internet marketing.

Spending $200 or $2000 on a website means nothing. People have lost thousands of dollars while pursuing an online dream. If you're not careful, your mom's monetary gift will amount to a hill of beans. So, take the advice of other posters that recommend researching and learning before you make any decisions about spending money. We speak from experience. Been there done that.

It seems like you're choosing the dating niche because of it being lucrative. If this is the only reason, it may or may not be the right niche for you to enter. Dating is lucrative, but highly competitive. Approach this market the wrong way and you'll fail. Don't expect to get answers to all of your dating site questions on this thread. These are questions that require you to spend time researching the answers. The forum is good for highly focused questions. However, you need to do extensive research to figure out what to do.

Since your real passion lies in game development, have you thought about creating and selling free game apps through Apple, Google Play and Amazon? Game apps are all the rage and have huge potential. It's highly competitive, but so is any popular niche (dating). The business model is to create free games and make money on the back end. You can monetize your apps with Admob and other digital ad services. You can also choose to upsell advanced game features for a fee.

You have a lot of work ahead of you if you really want to make money online successfully. The important thing to know that throwing a bunch of money at something doesn't mean you'll get the desired results. Research, planning and good execution are what it takes to create a steady income.

I know a fair bit about mobile games, but it's hugely competitive/saturated too, you can spend 6 months on a iOS game, launch it and not get one download, the current estimates to be in the top 10 in the USA app store are roughly $80k per day to spend on advertising/installs etc I think. The mobile games market is pretty much over, it's completely dominated now by the big players, who have a lock on the stores.

Thanks for all the advice though, lots of help there , what kind of internet marketing expertise do I need to know though specifically for a dating website? I've already got some ideas in regards to social media etc to help push any site I come up with, but I'm interested in specifics.

I think it's incredibly important for you to remember that throwing money at something is far from a guarantee of success.

We get so many people on this forum saying "I have $xxxx to spend! How should I spend it?!", when what they should be saying is "I have xxxx idea, and I know there is demand out there. Now, how much will it cost?".

    I started my website with:

    - a .com domain (a few dollars)
    - cheap web hosting
    - a wordpress theme from StudioPress

It probably cost less than $100 to get my first site off the ground. I then stopped investing money and only invested my time (writing articles, even drawing my own cartoons to accompany them!). I didn't spend another dollar until the site started making money. I then grew the site out of its own profits.

Your mother has given you a generous gift. Don't blow it on a $2k dating site that will have very little chance against the big players. Take your time and spend wisely.

Thanks for the advice, what would be your advice of where or what website idea to put the money into?

I think the main thing is to pick a niche that you know something about and have some interest in.

You don't have to be an expert (you can do research and learn as you go) but it's definitely easier to build a website around a topic that you're fairly familiar with than something that is completely alien to you.

Choose an area that you're interested in, do some keyword research, write articles around some of the most popular searches (or pay someone to write them on a site like elance - though, as I say, I try to avoid investing too much until I know something works) and see if you can get any traffic. Then build it up from there.

Remember: your aim is to make money, and you're lucky enough to have $2k to spend if necessary. Your aim is not to spend $2k!

I will admit that this method (trying things at low cost, developing the things that show signs of making money) may take longer to turn a profit. But it's a lot less risky than paying a fortune for a site that may not get any traffic.

Just to throw it out there, is it worth buying a few sites (or 1?) on flippa, rather than starting from scratch?

Dating is a niche that cannot be saturated. So yes, building dating "Landing Pages" could be profitable.

Small niches - in dating especially - is where most of the big money is.

You're going to need to buy traffic and test each niche you decide to venture into. But again, it is well worth it if you can optimize your traffic.

And on that note - realize this: You are going to need a tracking solution if you buy traffic (which you should).

Thanks for the info. You mean to track how effective any paid advertising is? how would I do that? What kind of tracking solution?

You have to track many things when you buy traffic - banner creatives, landing pages, conversions. Much of your traffic will be from mobile devices if you buy from places like TrafficJunkie - as many people scour the Net while they're at work or on lunch or - you name it (from their phones)

Go and watch what this tracking software does: imobitrax.com

    Hope that helps,
