Can't say I'm all that surprised to hear it. I get the impression that bing is causing a ripple of concern in the google camp in particular as maybe, just maybe they present something of a threat to the high and mighty ones.

At the time, they probably did not think they would need one

        You're kidding, right?

You don't think either Yahoo or Google would kill to get employees from the other?

to my understanding, none of the technology of searching, no matter google or bing, they are not really better than the other one. The fight between google and MS is all about $ in the marketing. Whoever can put more $ in the marketing, who will win.

In current economy, I think MS sees an opportunity. More companies cut the AD $ spend online, it means google makes less profit. MS has so much cash, they can afford the ad loss now. That's why they are pushing bing online & offline at full speed.

The whole thing looks like the war between MS and Sony for game console.

BTW, I do see traffic from bing is increasing.

Unless MS unrolls such equivalent services of Adsense, Analytics, Webmaster Tools, Adwords, Knol, etc etc etc (unless they are and I'm missing something), then I don't see how MS and Bing is going to be a tight competitor with Google.

With all those above listed (and those not listed) services, Google has provided internet users with great services and products to endear themselves to us users.

Courting competitors employees is an old Microsoft tactic. The most notorious example was in the 90s when they would park a limousine outside Borlands offices and give free pizza to the Borland programmers. Google, apparently, has great food so that wouldn't work, but the principle is the same.

This is what ended up happening between Borland and MS --

MS is pumping $9 billion into search.

Also, we don't full well KNOW we're getting a good deal with Google because there are no other competing search engines. I don't think Google is number 1 for being "the best", they are number 1 because we are used to them.

I have done comparision searches as well as many of my friends and really find no difference between the two or even yahoo for that matter. Google has great mind share. Can MS steal that away - not sure given the history and monoploy that MS tried to create in the late 90's. Maybe they can make a difference with new, younger generations. Right now - I still trust Google and see no reason to change. Plus, there are a pleatera of new niche search engines that I find better results with.

They really need employees to develop Bing.

Just like MSN search, the results in Portugal are from Brazil... pffff.

Edit: They're cool guys One of my de-ranked sites in Google is #1 in Bing, go figure.

I think it's great that MS is pouring all of this money into Bing in hopes of trying to move up the "search engine ladder", but I'm not sure how long the initial marketing buzz will last. As of now, MS is doing a great job of getting the Bing name know by making a footprint all across the web as well as on TV. This very second there are probably thousands of internet users saying, "What the heck is this Bing thing?" and trying Bing out for the first time.

However, Google is and will always be the search engine standard in my opinion. The average person recognizes Google as "the way" to search the internet and I just don't see any amount of money changing that. With that said, I sincerely hope this push from MS brings out some innovation in the search industry as well as an increase in search accuracy and relevance.

Fine with me, most of my domains are keyword loaded and top ranked at Bing...Google give little concern to a domain name these days.
