Selling art online - how to get traffic?

Hey ho,

I'm the online marketing manager of a very talented photograph who wants to sell his artworks online.

The quality of his images and photos is very high, he won dozens of prices and awards with his photos and now he wants to sell them online - premium priced! ($ 1000 on acryl-glass)

The big problem I see: An artwork doesn't solve an urgent problem (like "diet" or "dating") and I don't know how to get traffic for his website.

It's hard to imagine that someone is surfing through the world wide web, hits this art online-shop and thinks: "Oh wow, I spontaneously will take my credit card and pay $ 1000 for a photo-artwork I cannot even touch before shipping!"

With digital information products is easy to get traffic because there's a need and an urgent problem... but art? Don't how how to get traffic.

Any ideas?

Thanks

In general (there are some exceptions!) the trick with art is to take your art to where the targeted traffic is, not just to put your art up on a website and try to attract targeted traffic to it.

Whatever kind of art it is, there are hundreds/thousands of people already looking for it, at the well-known online art galleries (who display things and take a cut from the sale, or just charge a fee for pages on their site: there are all sorts of business/payment/commission models - you can imagine.)

But the general principle, online, with art, is to take the art to the buyers, not try to attract the buyers to the art.

Theres Deviantart where artists can sell their artwork.

Or create a website and use different methods to attract readers to that website.
Make sure you know your photographers target market, and find where those people hang out on the internet.

The artwork have any specific theme? If yes maybe you can find those specific theme forum or website and get traffic from them. I came across one very successful guy selling his spooky theme artwork online.

You have to identify where are the most popular websites which doing buying and selling of artwork. Get traffic from they, try to get them subscribe to your email list by giving something you think those people will want. Maybe if they are buyer, you can write something "how to estimate an artwork value", just a random idea. So that you can update them latest artwork.

I have to agree with Alexa - you need to take the art to the potential buyers and this could be done both online and offline.

It's not hard as you think. There are still passionate people who likes art, who likes creativity....

You have to filter your audience to find those passionate people

Here are some of my suggestions:

    1. Create a Facebook page about your photography.Be active there. Make regular posts. Post your photos there on Facebook page. Share your experience in photography. Share it in your blog and Facebook. And add a link back to your website.

    2. Find forums related to photography ,make quality contents there. Add a link to back your website

    3. PPC advertising. It involves money. If you do it right. Then you can get a great result. Find a mentor who can teach you well how to do PPC

These are few.you have many ways to promote!

one little advice I want to give is "It takes time,So be patient...."

    Good Luck

  • I am currently learning more and more about a site called Pinterest.com

On the surface its just another picture sharing website, however, based on the research that I've read, it also has some of the best converting buyer traffic of any social media site....and that was two years ago!

For artists trying to make a living selling their wares, Pinterest is basically perfect. Every image shared on Pinterest can be shared and passed around other social media site...along with a link to purchase that item.

You should definitely give this a shot. But remember, making money with social media marketing is all about building relationships. And that means you have to invest alot of time getting to know others on the site...but I believe it is worth it

Use sites like Etsy and even eBay to sell the art. Plaster the artists name all over the place, to encourage Google searches for them and to get some traffic to your actual site, but focus on places that already give artists the chance to sell their work online.

I did exactly the same thing about two years ago, for my mum who makes ragdolls, and had to slow things down cos she was getting so many orders...

So yeah, your website's important but you need to be adding other storefronts and showcases where your client can make sales...

Yeah, I think you'll have a problem. Not with getting likes on FB or Pinterest shares, but with selling the art that way, and sales are what you want, right?

But you can target the wealthy people on Facebook with ads through creating custom audiences and also typing in some art galleries by name, artist names, etc...into the Facebook Interests field when creating your ad...and target those people who have written them down as an interest, because they are probably big fans, and if the art is similar to your clients, you might get some serious buyers contacting you (or your client). Go where the money is for something like that, and don't spin your wheels gathering "likes" and "pins".

Since you can target your Facebook ads to specific interests and specific incomes, that is your best bet, imo.

Take out a classified ad on eBay. Not one of their regional freebie ads, one in their regular classified ad section. They're $10 and run for 30 days. And unlike their regular auction listings, you can include a link to any site outside of eBay.

The goal here is to take advantage of eBay's huge marketplace. There are lots of people looking for art and photography. The goal isn't so much to sell stuff (though it's not a bad thing if you do) as it is to put up some good samples and get them to click through to your site.

I don't know if anyone else has suggested this, but if he can get his artwork with a dealer he may be able to get it put on Saatchiart.com. They have some really great work. Also, check out places like Ugallery.

The very first thing I would do is to research where other photographers of a similar quality and style are selling, if possible to establish this. Study how they are positioning the photographers and photographs, and quickly check out their social media strategy as well. You need to locate where the buyers are for that particular genre and style, and price point.

Hmm, I don't know much about the art niche but I know that in the offline world they are holding vernissages / art exhibitions. Why don't you try to setup an online vernissage. This should be an event and you need people from the art niche who will support this event, means they drive traffic to your website (because you give them something back).

I'm not really sure how I'd do it, maybe with a Google Hangout where I present and sell the art. If you can mange to provide value to the potential customers as well as to your supporters (other art websites etc.), then you can run a big event and become instantly know.

It does solve a problem actually - emotional void! Yes, that's what it does. Art makes you feel good and oftentimes works as a medicine too.

I'm a photographer myself and understand the emotion. I'd suggest, don't try to sell art. Make it popular. Create as much hype as you can so owning a piece of work from your client becomes a status symbol for buyers. Create campaigns that popularize him as an artist and his achievements. Go for media campaigns, shake hands with gallery websites, get his works displayed in major hotels and resorts and get them to promote him.

In the art business, your customers are your affiliates. Get them to promote your client.

Hi, I work in the public relations and marketing world and I used to be an editor of a magazine. What you need to do is to come up with something that will interest blogs, online magazines and glossy magazines.

For online I would do the following

Do an interview with your client, then send this to all online magazines and blogs that deal with this subject.

Always send an image of the client and his artwork

      For offline promotion

Come up with something that would be newsworthy, or something that would interest the media.

Although everyone thinks getting into the media is hard, it is not. What you have to remember, newspapers and magazines are like cars. A car needs petrol to go from A to B, and publications need editorial to sell advertising space.

As long as you have something that is interesting then the media will go with it.
