I don't think so in the near future.

It seems to me like it's an old google algo with a few this and that..
But still it's got potential to beat google but not in this near future I suppose.

I just checked and 4.3% of my traffic this month has been from Bing. I'm surprised it is that high already.

  • I just posted a blurb from the Wallstreet Journal about Bing. So far so good. I am using it some now. It's actually much better than I expected. As a webmaster/marketer ... the community should hope for success with BING as it will help redistribute the mix of sites. The only people that would be against this of course are the select few who are ranking really high with Google, and of course the Microsoft Haters.

Disclosure: I've spent the last six years contracting exclusively with or for Microsoft. So yes, I am biased. On the other hand, there are not many people out in the general population with as clear a view of Bing as I have.

Consider that never in recorded history has Microsoft gained market leadership by bringing out a product that slaughtered the competition. They have gained market leadership by creating an also-ran; a second-place competitor, a next-best-thing... and waiting until their competition screwed up.

Lotus 1-2-3 owned spreadsheets. They screwed up; Excel ate them alive.

dBase III owned the small-scale database market. They screwed up; Access destroyed them.

WordPerfect owned word processing. They screwed up; Word stomped them into the dirt.

Borland (now Inprise) owned Windows software development. They screwed up; Visual Studio stole their customers.

RealAudio owned streaming video on the internet. They screwed up; Media Player slaughtered them.

Netscape owned the Windows web server market. They screwed up; IIS took over.

Google owns web search. Bing is there, hungry, capable, ready to pounce.

Now all Google has to do is not screw up. And just like every time Microsoft has stepped in and devoured a competitor, the very idea seems absurd... but it happens to the biggest and best of companies. Microsoft doesn't have to take anyone away from Google. They just have to be there when people leave. And while there certainly aren't many people leaving Google right now, and there probably won't be many in the near future - every company loses customers. And over time, Microsoft will gain share, slowly but surely. As the smaller competitor, they'll have less attrition than Google, so the net change will be consistently positive.

Eventually, there will be a tipping point, and Bing will become THE search engine. It won't happen overnight, but honestly... Microsoft have all the time in the world. They can wait a decade or more for Google to screw up.
