Hi Guys,

Just wondered if someone could point me in the right direction.

After working pretty hard to get my site well ranked I am finally in position #2 on page one of google. My niche is not something I can churn out lots of articles about but am building lots of links, creating web 2.0 and some articles so am hoping to get most of my traffic from googs organic traffic.

I have been at #2 for a few days now but I am only getting around 10 visitors per day, actually if that.

Here is my main keyword results that I am ranking for from the google keyword tool .

Broad match - 40,500
Phrase match - 31,000
Exact match - 12,400

Shouldn't I be seeing a bit more traffic given my ranking or am I being impatient?

If I can't expect to see a decent amount of visitors at that ranking I'll just have to do more article marketing and things but just wondered if I am maybe going wrong with my title and description not being catchy enough of something, and if I should definitely be seeing lots of traffic for that rank.

Beth.

You showed the number of competing pages, which explains how you rank so high, but what about number of monthly searches? Go to https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal and search for the phrase, then look at what Google shows as the most recent monthly search volume. I'm guessing it's pretty low if you're ranked #2 and only seeing 10 visitors/day.

Looks like you did it half right. You do want to focus on keywords that don't have a lot of competition, but you also need to cull that list down to those that also get a decent number of searches.

It's also important to improve your on-site conversion rate, so you turn as high a number as possible of those visitors into customers.

      Hi John,

      Thanks for your reply.

Actually the numbers I gave were for the amount of searches - sorry I didn't make it very clear.

The number of competing pages are:

      With quotes - 89,700
      Without quotes - 334,000

So does that make a difference, could I be doing something wrong considering there are lots of searches for that keyword and I'm at #2?

      Thanks.

    Hello,

Your figures don't make any sense to me. I get more clicks that this at position number 5 for a keyword that receives just 800 searches a month. Do you have a Google account? If you are signed in to this when you do your searches it can make you seem WAY higher in the search engine rankings that you really are.

    Thanks,

    Andy

Really? Hmm, that would explain why my ranks show lower in Rank Checker than in google itself. However, I just signed out with my google account and my ranking is not changing in the SERPS. I'll try scroogle later and see what comes out.

I don't believe it has anything to do with whether or not you're signed into Google when you check. It has to do with saved cookies on your computer.

Beth - check your Google position in Scroogle.org, not Google. I learned the hard way that Google cookies will make your site appear VERY high in position when in fact, it's just not so. Go to scroogle.org and look up your niche phrase in the scroogle scraper. That'll give you a much more realistic view of where your site is at in Google.

I have never heard of scroogle and can`t understand why it is a better indicator of your google position than google itself..Can somebody please clarify?

From what I understand, the cookies on your computer have an effect on how the results show up on your computer when doing a Google search. So, when I'm at work and compulsively checking my dog care blog niche phrase and looking at my site 100 times a day (who me? never.) Google "remembers" this and shows the site higher up in the search results than it actually is.

I'm sure not all of that is 100% correct, but that's the gist of it. When you look up a your niche phrase in scroogle.ORG (haha), you'll get a realistic view of your Google position, because it searches remotely, and therefore the cookies on your computer have no effect on the results.

I suspected that too so I deleted them and the ranking is still the same. I even checked with another browser that I never use (Opera). When I do scroogle however, my pages are showing one rank lower than directly in google. Like 5th instead of 4th, 3rd instead of 2nd. Always one rank. Strange!

grab a free keyword tracker and see how many searches per day those keywords get, they may only get around 10 visitors a day.

    Hi,

    Thanks for your replies everyone.

I checked out the scroogle scraper, lol hadn't heard of that.

My position was slightly lower at rank #5 but that's not too bad at least.

However, I checked my keyword using the keyword tracker and right enough there were only 800 searches per month . What a difference from the lofty results with the google tool.

So does that mean that I shouldn't believe a word of the google keyword tool?! The thing is the search results were also the same as google keyword tool using the marker samurai(with broad, phrase and exact match) so if the keyword tracker is right then that means both the google keyword tool and samurai are waaaay out??

I am at a complete loss now and don't know what to believe. It's hard enough putting a lot of work into something but when you are unsure of the essential keyword stats its even harder.

It would seem that my google analytics results match up with the keyword tracker tool so I prob need to use that.

    What dyou think.

    Thanks
