Hi All,

I noticed that there are all kinds of new domain extensions coming out just recently and wanted to know what sort of value or credibility these new domains will have going forward.

    Nobody knows, with certainty.

I've bought and sold a couple of hundred domain-names over the last few years (it's a little "sideline business" I enjoy) and I'll definitely be keeping well away from all the new domain-extensions, myself. For business, anyway. (I might buy one or two ".zone" extensions just for myself, for personal things).

It seems kind of "unimaginable" that they can have the value or credibility of ".com" domains, doesn't it? (No other "new domains" in the past ever have done, have they?).

At the moment they are basically worthless and it's definately not advisable to buy one and build a business on it.

However, as with anything, the rare domain names will definately increase in value as more and more get sold, but we're talking about a lot of years here.

For now just buy a .com and/or a .net or .org as these are the top level domain names and will most probably always be.

Domain registrars are doing a good job of pimping them to try and get everybody to "secure their web real estate whilst they can" but the reality is .com's are more than likely to remain the gold standard for decades to come as they have done for the past 20 years....

If you want to hold a bunch of crap domains, then buy them. Otherwise, stick with the winners and save yourself some money. There will be the occasional high dollar sale of one of these domains, but it will not be the norm.

It depends on what you want.

    .Com is for commercial
    .Edu for educational sites e.t.c
    .Gov for government

    .Com is the most popular.

In my opinion, you can have any new extension and what matters in the end is the value of your site.

the more extensions there are, the more valuable .com will be.

In my opinion, .com is only the most valuable because that's where most of the high value content is.

If someone was to register a .marketing domain and put high value content on that site, the value of that domain would increase, perhaps not as much as if it was on a .com, but the growth of that domain would still be significant.

My opinion is there will never be a domain revolution like the late 90s and early 2000s. The new domains are simply a way for registrars to have a new product to sell. In fact, having the new domain options has diminished the value of a new extension. If they were smart, they would've released them little by little instead of lumping them all together...

Supply and demand. Too much supply = No demand.

That makes sense, if there is flood of them which there is then the demand would decrease. Also as a fellow warrior mentioned, most people know that value is in the .com, so will there actually be a take up on these domains? In actual fact i'll go as far as to say "probably not" unless Matt Cutts decide to allocate value to EMD's again.
