Any WordPress gurus out there that can help me?

I'm going bonkers here trying to figure this out. I have a hosting account with GoDaddy. The first website I put on the hosting account was drumcorpsvideos.com, which became the parent domain. Then, as I added more domains to the hosting account, I had to create sub-folders, which I did for each domain I added to the hosting account. This didn't present a problem until I wanted to install WordPress on one of the domains.

When I went through GoDaddy to install WordPress on a domain I'm hosting for my daughter called devourthepoconos.com, I had to actually istall in a folder called drumcorpsvideos/devourthepoconos. I did that and you can access the blog by typing in devourthepoconos.com. The problem is, once you get to the blog, in the address bar at the top of the browser it is showing drumcorpsvideos.com/devourthepoconos. I don't want the root directory to show up.

GoDaddy doesn't know how to fix this because they don't know much about WordPress. And I'm going crazy trying to figure it out. I already made one mistakie before I backed up my database and actually had to uninstall and then reinstall WordPress. I screwed up the database big time!

If anyone knows of a way I can fix it so my root directory does not show up on the blog pages, I'd greatly appreciate your help!

Thanks!!!!!!

Chris

Seems like you just installed devourthepoconos on your main page in a folder.

You need to make sure it's standalone. I'm not sure but I'd say go into the blog setting first and make sure your blog url and what not are devourthepoconos.com

And if that doesn't fix it then make sure you install devourthepoconos as an addon domain rather than just a folder on the main site drumcorpsvideos...

That's the way GoDaddy is set up. When you add domains to your hosting account, they go in as sub-folders under the main domain. At least that is what they told me and that's what I've been doing.

When I went into the blog settings to change the url, I removed the "drumcorpsvideos.com" part of it and that's how I royally screwed everything up.

I really hate to get another hosting account just for the blog, but I don't want the drumcorpsvideos showing up as part of the url. What a PITA!

      Thanks for your input!!!!

Godaddy hosting is not the greatest (easiest) host to work with.

As mentioned above, you don't want to install in the folders of the main domain, but in the sub-domain at it's root. Adding your domains as "add-ons" should have been what you did to add the domain to the host.

Hi Greg! When I installed WordPress, I did install it in the devourthepoconos folder and not folders of the main domain.

      Thanks!!!!

GoDaddy and WordPress do not go together well. In fact Go Daddy is a great registrar, but their hosting sucks. If you want to run WordPress, I strongly advise that you switch hosts.

Do you have a good host in mind?

          Thanks!!!

I don't buy from GoDaddy. I use Hostgator.

But if you have cpanel in GoDaddy, here's how you should do it (if I'm understanding your problem)...

Go to cpanel for your drumcorpsvideos.com account.

Scroll down to the Domains sections and click Addon Domains. That's where you want to enter your new domain, devourthepoconos.com

(An addon domain will make devourthepoconos.com look like it's a separate website.)

Once you click on the Addon Domains icon, you'll fill in the following information...

    New Domain Name: devourthepoconos.com

Then click the blank field by Subdomain/Ftp Username and that will automatically fill in the Subdomain/Ftp Username and the Document Root fields.

In the next field, type in a password. Then re-enter the password into the Password (Again) field.

Click the Add Domain! button and you'll now have devourthepoconos.com set up to show as a unique website.

Then click "Go Back" to get back into the main page of cpanel and we'll set up Wordpress on devourthepoconos.com with Fantastico.

Scroll down the main cpanel page to the Software/Services section. Click the blue smiley labelled Fantastico De Luxe.

On the next page, look in the left column for the Blogs section and click WordPress.

On the next page, click the blue link, New Installation.

On the next page, find the "Install on domain" field. Click the blue arrow by the blank field and choose devourthepoconos.com

For the "Install in directory" field, leave it blank if you want Wordpress installed on the devourthepoconos.com home page. Or if you want Wordpress installed on a blog directory such as devourthepoconos.com/blog, then type in blog.

Admin access data is how you get into the Wordpress control panel to make your posts and pages. You'll access it as devourthepoconos.com/wp-admin if Wordpress is installed on the home page or as devourthepoconos.com/blog/wp-admin if Wordpress is installed on the subdirectory named blog.

Administrator username is the username you want to use and Password is obviously the password you'll type in when you go to wp-admin as I described in the previous paragraph.

Next, you'll see Base configuration. Admin nickname is the name that shows up when you write blog posts or respond to comments on your blog. You can type your first name here or even just use "Admin."

Admin email is the email address you want to use with the blog... e.g., blogadmin@devourthepoconos.com

The site name shows up in your blog as your blog name and in search engine results as the title of your blog. So no matter what your domain name, it's best to type in the main keyword or keyword phrase you want to rank for in "site name."

The description of your blog should also include your main keyword or keyword phrase for SEO purposes.

    Now click "Install WordPress."

On the next page, you'll see your Wordpress Installation information. Note down the details in a safe place, then click "Finish Installation."

    And that's pretty much it.

Now your Wordpress blog should show up when you type www.devourthepoconos.com (or www.devourthepoconos.com/blog if you set it up in the blog subdirectory) in your browser address bar.

If GoDaddy doesn't have cpanel, then I'm not sure how to tell you to do it.

    Good luck,

    Debbie

I use hostmonster and i have many sub domains on it. they even supply simple scripts like joomla and wordpress along with many other different softwares. all you do is go to the domain folder before entering your cpanel and upload whatever script you want onto that domain. I haven't had any problems yet.

Not sure what you did, but I have the same setup with blogs on other domains under my parent hosting account, at Godaddy.

I add a new domain to the account, tell it what subfolder I want it to be in. Then, once that's working right, I go to whatever they call their little system for adding WordPress, and install it in the right place.

Never had an issue, not sure what happened for you. If you use their little software installer, you can always uninstall and try again if something messes up.

Don't know why the lack of love for Godaddy. I've never had issues with em.

Keith, I don't know what's going on. I added devourthepoconos to my hosting with drumcorpsvideos being the parent directory. When I go through GoDaddy's setup for WordPress, the only domain it shows available for install is the the drumcorpsvideos domain. GoDaddy told me to set up WordPress as drumcorpsvideos.com/devourthepoconos. I don't know why devourthepoconos doesn't show up as an available domain for installation of WordPress.

      Thanks!!!

      Hi Keith,

I've had clients who were using GoDaddy to host their WordPress blogs. Their blogs would hang when writing or editing posts or pages. I never experienced that problem with other hosts. Now it may have been some other problem, perhaps coincidental, but I know others have experienced similar stuff happening with their GoDaddy hosting accounts. I have a feeling they oversell their server space resulting in server overload for any site that's database-driven.
