Whats the best business model that will last for decades?

Hi warriors,

I'm planning my exit from my full time job (in 1-2 years time) and want to work online without a boss. I would like to know your opinion about the most sustainable online business model that will work for decades and that will provide me an income to feed my family.

I have a few years experience with internet marketing and have made some money but I was doing all this part-time.

I know that my question is very broad and that it depends on a lot of factors, but I would appreciate your feedback. I want to use a business model that will not die in a few years from now.

Thanks in advance

Harris

That is the 64 million dollar question and yes it can be done, however it requires a dedication that is rarely seen online. I also believe that in order to succeed long term there really are just a few things that you have to keep in mind.

    #1 Honesty and Integrity.
    #2 Remember the Golden Rule.
    #3 Provide superior support.
#4 Create good working relationships with other professionals.
#5 Be innovative and find solutions to common problems.

The list could go on and on, but over all avoid the mistakes you see other people and companies make and that will go a long way to creating success in the long run, one of the most overlooked opportunities is in Time Management.

Its a limited resource and one that a lot of people tend to waste on a regular basis.

    Harris,

Create "evergreen" products that have a long shelf life. For example
you could write/record info-products on cooking, gardening and self
improvement. There is virtually always a market for those types of
information based products. Your portfolio could include books, audio
    and video.

I'd also highly recommend that you choose a single market and focus
on list building to get started.

The same business model that has worked for the past 20+ years and will still work for the next 20+ years.

    1. Find people with a problem
    2. Solve that problem for them

Making money online is easy. In every transaction it is simply an exchange of value. You need to have something that people value more than their money and you'll make the sale everytime.

Sound simple? Well really it is...

Thanks a lot guys for your replies.

I'm a tech guy and I own 2 technology websites in a certain niche. They are 4-5 years old sites with lots of content but I have abandoned them after the Google Panda and Penguin updates. Maybe I'll start working on them again and try to increase traffic.

      Thanks for all your feedback.

It seems to me that this would be a good foundation for the business model that many successful I.M.'s use and that is to build a following through list building and quality content. Then you will have a built in audience to which you can market products that you truly believe in. The best part is no matter what animal mother G comes up with to throw at you, it shouldn't bother you in the least. Good Luck.

I suggest having a blog or brand that provides value and solving people's problems. When you provide solutions for example to marketers in make money online niche that can help them create their first income online, you will never run out of market.

Article marketing, is my best guess.

It's been a stunningly good business model for many decades (some people say for centuries), and it's very successful to use online as well, now that the internet exists.

It's the most sustainable business model I can imagine. And for online purposes, if anything it's very gradually becoming a little more profitable, and a little easier to do, each year. It's certainly a bit easier in 2014 than it was in 2008 when I started.

Thanks a lot Alexa for stopping by and giving your feedback. Yeah I agree that article marketing and content marketing in general is great, but you need to have good copyright skills for that. I'm also burned-out from writing and since English is not my mother language I got bored from that. I'm looking into other ways to build a sustainable business and I'm inclined more on product creation and list building.

Yes - that's good, too (you still need to write emails! But you can obviously do that?)

Actually, to be fair, "article marketing" isn't necessarily a "business model", really, anyway: it's more of a "traffic-generation method", for online marketing.

        Hey Harris,

I was going to suggest the same thing.

I understand about being burnt out with writing.

I LOVE to write and the same thing happened to me a few years back. Then I decided to write only about topics I was really interested in.

That made a world of difference. I'm sure it would for you as well.

Believe me, the fact that you can write at all is a big, BIG plus. In online marketing, you either write great content or you pay for traffic...unless you happen to know someone with a huge list who loves you unconditionally enough to send your offer to it.

Even then, information products are evergreen and, if you do a good job, you can sell one for years and years.

All that said, building something sustainable is less about the business and more about your relationships with your customers.

The only way to get in the income on demand position is with a responsive following, like a list or a damn popular blog like copyblogger.com.

Not to mention that by building a following first, you've got a much better chance of creating a product people want.

I'd suggest starting right away. Find something you enjoy writing about and that other people are interested in...then, let the market tell you where to go from there.

    Food service.

The Internet could be heavily regulated or become even more dominated by huge corporations. Or disaster may strike and Internet connectivity could be upset and downtime could last for months or even years. In some worst case scenarios, stuff like EMPs could complete destroy a lot of the technology we rely on. Or people may not care about the latest eBook or WSO or whatever.

But, people will always need food.

    Hi,

    1. Find a HOT market that has needs and are willing to pay for solutions.

    2. Create a product or service that meets those needs/desires.

    3. Build a buyers list through the sales you make from those products.

    4. Create more products based on your experiences and share your knowledge.

    5. Promote those to your current buyers lists.

Continue to build relationships with your lists, keep adding fresh leads into
your business that are looking for the same solutions that all of your products
    provide to them.

Create a sales funnel for each of your products and TEST your numbers/conversions
and try to tweak and improve your funnels until fully optimized for maximum
    performance.

Creating products that help others get what they want and getting them onto your lists
continues to work and has worked for many years prior to today.

well basically a few things sell well on the internet. porn, gambling, computer oriented stuff. stay close to those and we can say it's going to be evergreen. for porn go with dating or the things that get the dates like weight loss, exercise etc, for gambling go with how to make money, for computers you could go with apple or cellphones etc.

I remember Archie, Veroica and Jughead. And Gopher. Napster. And even before those, the bbs and usenet. We started selling online in 1985, with what was allowable back then, computer pieces, parts and information.

In 1995, the first big boom for www. By 96, the first of the IMers were on board. What were they offering?

Well, the same thing they offered off line for centuries. Self Improvement and Money Making ops. Sex (or relationships). Connection to others.

Corey Rudl used his off line experience to offer information on buying a car and is considered one of the early IM pioneers, Marlon Sanders was testing on AOL and Compuserve and was one of the first big time Information Marketers on line (and still killing it).

As one of my mentors, Melvin Powers, told me: "Build a business around THEM, make it about them, give them what they want."
And I believe that you will see this mantra used by every single IMer who has had at least a decade of success or more.

The most sustainable business in the world, offline or on, is when you make your Prospect your product.

Build your brand. Money, your product or your business model is temporary but your brand will never fade.

    Examples:

    Virgin
    Apple
    Google
    IBM
    Microsoft
    GE
    McDonalds
    Samsung

See the difference? They kept building their brand and let people trust them

Build your brand till you reach a point where people will never forget you

List building isn't the ONLY way to go though; what I'm suggesting is: research, knowledge and advice from others is always a great start. However, implementing ideas and gaining knowledge should allow you to choose your own path, successful people use knowledge and advice to weave their own destiny, instead of simply following someone else's.

On that note, good luck to OP!

Lots of good advice here already. Here's my two pennies' worth:
    - If you're looking for something to last 20 years create a proper business, not just something to sell stuff online - think business first, internet second;
    - 'When there's a gold rush, sell shovels' - No-one remembers anyone who made money in he American gold rush. But loads of people know about Levi-Strauss who sold trousers to those searching for the gold!
    - Whatever it is you focus on, make sure you enjoy doing it. So many successful people have become successful because they don't see their occupation as work, they see it as something they love doing and would do it even if they weren't paid for it.

    Hi HarrisAndrea,
I am in the exactly the same boat and I have been doing a tonne of research. I have been doing internet marketing now for a few years and you know what I discovered...... it's hard. If it was easy everyone would be successful in it. However the residual income is very nice. I have a background in website design so some aspects of IM I found quite easy, it's the lead generation and conversion that is the hard part.

I have recently changed my game plan.... Real Estate Options. I am working on my first deal now and it looks like it will net me $60,000 profit for 6 months part time work. However it requires you to get out of your computer chair for a little bit and go outside into the real world. The Real estate business model has stayed the same for decades, acquire, improve, sell, profit.

If the outside does not interest you then I recommend Jay Wessman's Screw95 Internet marketing course. If SEO is your only business model then you will forever be chasing leads, that is a lot of hard work. Create a Brand, create a social following, provide useful content and interact with your followers..... you will survive ANY Google update....trust me.

in 2008 when the market crashed, i went back and studied, what the long lasting businesses who did well through the 1929 crash did.

For them it was about SUPPLY and DEMAND, offer stuff that people want in popular demand.

    And get leads everyday.

These are these principles 100 years later, nothing has changed.

Have your list of prospects, and have your list of customers who buy from you regularly. There is nothing complex, about it, yet why do people keep looking for the latest WSO, or clickbank product or magical miricle cream they rub on their [marketing foreSKIN] and hope it gets bigger and better then before.

The thing is once you realise there is NO HOLY GRAIL to doing business online, the sooner u will take action and make money.

    1) BUILD LIST
    2) BUILD BIGGER LIST
    3) OFFER THEM STUFF
    4) GET A BUYERS LIST GOING and OFFER THEM MORE STUFF.

I am not being flippant this simple stuff has been working for YEARS! And it is our secret to making $10,000 USD a month online.

Funny thing is most people will not do all the hard stuff first. Once its all set up you just have to work 1 - 2 hours a day.

    I would say 4 things...

    1. Find an evergreen hungry niche or market with needs and money to spend

    2. Build a list in that niche

    3. Build a relationship with the people in that niche

    4. Sell them stuff (your products and affiliate products /services)

You want something that will work for decades?

    Here you go:

    1. Provide a service

    2. Sell something valuable to an audience that wants it

Of course the details will keep changing over time since the internet keeps changing. And that's why you will always have to keep learning and staying up to date.

But as long as you can provide a service that people want or sell something that people want - you will be able to make money.

As mentioned by fellow Warriors, selling solutions is the way to go. However, you need to keep in mind that things are changing rapidly everywhere, so you'll need to foresee changes and come up with solutions before the market gets saturated. There's no fun (and money) in selling rehashed stuff.

Be creative now and never stop being creative.

    Hi HarrisAndrea,

My recommendation (since you're a tech guy) is to create courses on Udemy.com

The top-selling courses on Udemy are all tech and business / career related.

They have over 2 million students and they do a great job of promoting your courses.

There are people making six-figures on Udemy and for the most part, it's passive income because the courses are video-based.

Just check out the huge number of students enrolled in technology courses on Udemy and I think you'll be amazed at the income potential.

Cut prices to gain an industry share and profit later. Target a huge market and sell a product at the lowest price with fast delivery and great service. As the company grows, expand the product line, negotiate volume discounts with suppliers, invest in technology to speed up customer-response time and cut waste from the operations. Then deliver the lower costs to customers in the form of lower prices.

HarrisAndrea, look for people's wants (not needs) and provide for it. It is really that simple in terms of identifying the WHAT!

Evergreen Niches are: Health (exercise & fitness etc.), Wealth and Relationships.

As to the HOW? Well there are many schools of thought. Do you like writing? If you do, then one such solution is to develop an Authority Site that engages readers in one of the above niches.

Focus and Building a List in any of the every green niches.

    Money, Health and Fitness, Relationships.

Provide massive value to your subscribers.

Help them get what they want, that will help you build your tribe. Provide them with solutions to problems they have.

    How? Simple.. Ask them..

Survey your subscribers and find out what they need help with, then give them the help.

Free or paid is up to you and the relationship you have with them.

The Money is NOT in the List.. it is in the relationship you build with the list..

The beauty of building that tribe is that you will always have traffic to direct.

Currently, I build my list funnels in the IM and Health Niche.

    Why?

Every Body wants to make money, and every one wants to be healthy and fit.

    But...

Your subscribers also have passion in other niches and so surveying them and directing them will help you build other mini business in other markets.

This alone is what I credit with my income online and that of my friends who I have shown how to do this..

If you are going to retire in one to two years, you better get going now on an internet business, because it's going to take that long to get established and build up a good traffic source. There are several business models that will be around for a long time.
However what you need are products that are always in demand or solve problems for people. If you can develop that I would not worry too much about the business model

I would recommend something in the food industry because a bad economy does not mean we cut back on food (especially comfort food). Another industry you could look at would be the Pet Industry because pet ownership has continued to grow. Some people even spend more on their pets then themselves. In America nearly $53 billion was spent on pets in 2012 and in 2013 it passed the $60 Billion mark. Apparently when humans are down having a cat to cuddle goes a long way Mr. Monetize

Selling in an evergreen market via direct mail.

As long as you get a fresh new source of targeted leads you can mail every month, and you have the right sales process in place, it can pay out for years.

I know Dan Kennedy once said he mailed out something like 10,000 pieces of mail in a campaign EVERY MONTH for like 7 years and counting.

And the kicker is, it sold them with a sales video that was over an hour long on a page online.

Think about that, 7 years, 10,000 pieces of mail every month. Amazing.

Truth is, the only thing constant in life is change.

I'm sure if you ask Steve Jobs he wasn't expecting Apple to live forever.

The only thing that can live on is your aspiration and hard-work.

Keep making those products and services and figure out the best way to reach out to your customers, find out what exactly they want, how they want it and how to give it to them.

Think about what humans actually need. They do not need the internet - we got by for years and years without the internet.

      People need 3 things:

      1. Food
      2. Water
      3. Shelter (ie houses)

If you sell one of these things you will have a business that will last as long as humans do.

I have a few years experience with internet marketing and have made some money but I was doing all this part-time.

I know that my question is very broad and that it depends on a lot of factors, but I would appreciate your feedback. I want to use a business model that will not die in a few years from now.

    • Selling information
    • Selling software or platforms (pay close attention to the business sections of your newspapers or the Wallstreet Journal and look at what companies Google, Facebook, Berkshire Hathaway are buying).
    • Creating a transaction based business model (think Clickbank, Paypal, Shopping Carts, etc.)
    • Licensing
    • Brokering
    • Investments (stocks, bonds, mutual funds, private placements, etc.). Yes, investing can be a business model. You don't have to be a high paid money manager with a CFA or an MBA. There are plenty of people who make a full time income investing in things such as stocks, commodities, options, etc.

Good for you taking action and having some success along the way. The next step is to define what it is YOU want to do with that knowledge.

Sure, insurance and knitting products sell.. but is that what you want to focus your life on?

    I don't.

So forget what everyone else says and think about what YOU want to do... then ask how can you accomplish that building a list?

See what I did there? You thought I was just going to blow smoke and then BAM... build a list comes up. There's a reason so many people recommend it, and it's because as time goes on and it builds, so does your income.

It sounds like you aren't in a huge hurry, so choose something you're passionate about and start working towards building a business around it.

The best business model online is to focus on making your relationships with strategic partners your foundation. No matter what you're selling, it is your relationship with vendors, traffic sources, etc. that will give you the competitive advantage. Everything else changes quickly in digital, but your ability to form business relationships beyond the standard transactions will keep you ahead of the pack.
