Reasonable Expectation of how much I can make freelancing?

You are absolutely right . . . the amount you can make is going to vary person by person.

Yes, web designers can make a very nice income online under the right circumstances.

Many web designers have difficulty making much money at all.

Freelancing, no matter the industry, takes a lot of initiative, creativity, drive, and a solid work ethic. Often years of long hours are needed before you have a client base that will keep you busy.

So yes, you can make a living income as web designer. Competition is everywhere including cheap alternatives like Fiverr . . . so it won't necessarily be easy or quick.

The web designers I know that make very good money are the ones who work with local businesses in their area. If you're planning to prospect on places like freelancer then you're competing with hundreds if not thousands of other web designers so you will have to reduce your rate, especially in the beginning when you have no feedback.

It's all going to depend on your drive and ambition.

To truly make freelancing a full-time career, you alone will have to be the driving force to get you there.

Don't rely on places like fiverr, please (although apparently some people do make a lot after years of trying).

Instead, attack it from all fronts:

-Set up shop (make yourself a website or a FB page)
-Ask local businesses that you patronize or that you are familiar with
-Spread the word - ask everyone to tell everyone that you are available. This is by far the best method to landing clients (and you can ask any established freelancer and they will probably agree).
-You can also set up profiles on freelancing sites (such as freelancer and odesk), take some proficiency tests and do what it takes to get yourself out there.

But in short - yes, you can totally earn as much as you want as a freelancer. But your'e going to have to really work at it.

I've done local business and the odesk/elance route. The money is definitely local if you can get it.

If you are going to go oDesk/others - BE VERY CLEAR ON WHAT YOU ARE OFFERING AND WHAT IS EXPECTED OF YOU!

Sorry but I really can't stress that enough.

A lot of people on those sites have totally unrealistic expectations of what they are getting for their $500 dollar "quick fix" and will either never pay or hold the money over you until you do a ton of work that was never part of the original agreement.

I tried to go full-time developer on oDesk/Elance/etc... and did so for about 6 months. I really enjoy website development and wanted to broaden my client scope, but I was totally under prepared for dealing with web dev/programming clients in an online relationship like that and it wound up being too much of a headache for me to continue.

I had some good experiences as well, but in general I can make more locally and can drive over to a clients place of business if we need to discuss something.

Im a part time graphic designer on freelancer.

I probably make $300-500 per month on freelancer, I could make more if I had all day to sit there and bid.

then about $200 per month doing some freelancing on fiverr and another site.

If you have skills and can communicate well you can easily make money, freelancing is probably the easiest way to make money online, certainly easier than trying to rank a website on google. The hard thing about freelancing is actually developing the skills to be able to do it.

That's a great combination of skills set.

As for how much you can earn, only you can write your income ticket.

My advice is to join the top freelancing sites and promote/build your profile as well as offer.

Only you can set your hourly rate, get clients and delver on your promises...

Decide how much money you need and or want to make.. Assuming you don't want to make crap money you want to charge what your worth.

I've paid up to $1000 an hour for these types of services "HTML, CSS, graphic design, PHP, copy and paste javascripts"

But I was paying the best of the best..

Price yourself what you are worth... I have never seen your work but in your field if you are good you should be charging at least $100 an hour

20 hour a week for clients $2000 a week then spend your other 20 hours a week marketing to get clients
