Not sure which niche to stick with

I have spent lots of time bidding and starting websites up and re selling. Iv made my fair share here and there but its time for me to settle down with one business and focus on making full time income.

I started a drop shipping pet company online, very short brandable name but the pet niche is so large. I have over 500 products on my store but I find it difficult to keep the prices low but to where you still can make decent money. I have an online blog connected to the store but I feel like nothing happens when I'm just paying someone to write up pet articles....

I have a passion for sports and music but again that is another niche that has lots of competition already out there.

Is there any kind of advertising company that is worth getting into? Or starting a social network website that offers Facebook likes, Twitter followers and so on?

Id love to start something and stick to it and watch it grow for years while making good money, but I don't know where my heart points.

Sit down and write your ideas out. It will help to get things on paper and in front of you. Start looking at the pros and cons of each. It sounds like you already have an established business - are you really ready to walk away from that and do something new? Or could you take what you know from that and use it for something you're more passionate about like sports or music?

I go to school for public relations. I do a lot of online music promoting, boosting unsigned music artists social networks up, getting them blog features and so on. Maybe if I create a website selling social media likes and followers I can make extra $ there. Not really establishing anything since they are just boosting their profile count up, but I know people will buy...

Id love to start another clothing line because it makes me anxious to wake up everyday knowing I have clothes to promote. But I keep running into trademark troubles and selecting a brand name has been tough.

Sports blogging isn't too difficult. Iv ran lots in the past, made good $ from selling blogroll links, in content links, and Iv sold a blog for $5,000. But I want to run something up and beyond that.

Pick a niche that suits your interest. Identify a sub-niche within that niche where you don't have as much competition. Create blog around that sub-niche and slowly start building it like a authority site. You can link that to you your store, affiliate products or whatever else you want to sell. This will take sometime, so be patient and don't lose the focus.

So far, you've had more success than many in the online internet marketing arena except now I think maybe you want to get a business and watch it grow over years rather than simply building and selling it. But, who's to say such a thing is even possible or feasible? Get in, make money and then get out while before it goes bad. Do you know how many people got stuck in a sinking ship of a site still clinging on? As for what niche will be successful, that will soley depend on you and your efforts as you are the one putting the passion into the site.

For example, I have this pet store. Sometimes I get motivated to start it up because im like "yeah, I'm going to write lots of articles..... obtain traffic, sell a crap load of products". But sometimes when I look at the design and stuff I feel like I won't sell anything and I only have $50 invested in the whole site if I sold it for x,xxx id be happy.... then move onto another project.

    Don't compete with price.
Figure out your USP. Unique selling proposition and offer that to your customers.
If you engage in the price game their will always be someone to undercut you.

This is a common misunderstanding here. There is no such thing as the "pet niche." Pets is a multi billion dollar MARKET. The same thing goes for sports and music, billion dollar markets. Same for the Health & Fitness markets. Same for Food, Computers, Cars, Boats, the list of markets is endless. A niche is a small portion of a broad market.

No one can dominate a broad market. If you're into pets then pick a specific "niche" within the pet market like housebreaking puppies or dental care for cats or hamster health or any other real niche.

The same thing goes for sports and music. Denver Bronco shirts is a niche within a MASSIVE MARKET. But it's something you could reasonably tackle. Buying and selling old sheet music is a niche in a massive MARKET. Buying and selling old vinyl 45s is a niche. Selling beats is a niche.

People have told me the terminology doesn't matter but it does. Especially when someone says the music niche is too big or the health and fitness niche is too big. Of course they are too big. They're not niches.

The Pet market is massive. Aside from your blog, how are you getting traffic to it? And with your traffic, are you doing some kind of testing to optimize your conversions?

An online pet store is a goldmine if you know what your customers want and how to get targeted traffic.

You sound like you're all over the place. I like the suggestion someone gave you on writing down what you're really interested in, then do some cursory market research to see if it's a niche that has buyers and advertising dollars.

I launched my store about a week ago. So no sales yet. I am also doing the drop shipping method.

As far as traffic goes, I submit each article to GoArticles.com and I use social media such as Facebook and Instagram. My twitter dont have much activity going just yet.

I basically just have over 500 products on my store that is all dog/cat stuff.... Is selling generic apparel/products waste of time? Or should I start selling just house breaking items and that is it? That way I stick to one specific niche.

      STICK TO SPORTS AND MUSIC

a lot of people in certain industries HATE the biggest competition

i.e. Most psychologists hate doctor Phil, also most life coaches hate Tony Robbins (unless there in his training program haha)

**** SO if you stick to what you said your interested in, and find the person in that competitive niche that everyone totally hates, even though they are the "expert"

THEN all you have to do is cater your products/marketing to the group that hates "THE BIG COMPETITION"

AND call out "THE BIG COMPETITION", say something crazy about the BIGGEST competition like "Dr. Phil slept with Oprah and she gave him a show, he's B*itch made"

(not this ^^^ but something like this and totally diss the competition with something your market can relate to, they will love it)

crazy controversy that speaks to your market creates huge noise and controversy which gets you fans like you wouldn't believe

---i.e. after 50 Cent got shot Columbia Records dropped him because of the controversy liability, Eminem signed him BECAUSE of the controversy and the money/fame it would bring

and it gets you WHITE HOT followers i.e. Republicans vs Democrats these people are usually on fire with there beliefs totally on board with one side

so go after the niche you want

and make room for yourself by hitting "Goliath" with a stone , then ripping his head off while the people that hate him crown you King

Right now I am selling just common pet supplies. Toys, clothing, etc.

If I just sold and focused on writing blog articles on house breaking, you think that would bring in more revenue and generate more traffic?

Forget articles (well sort of). The pet lovers I know go crazy over pet pictures and videos. They like to see the critters.

If I were you, I'd build a website that serves as a daily dose of "pet crack" and use that to funnel people to my ecommerce site. Build your feeder site via social media with contests, stories, how-to content, etc. supported by pictures, videos, info graphics, etc.

That way, at least you'll still have your feeder site if you ever get sick of the ecommerce side of it. Then you could monetize that traffic by selling your own info products, affiliate products, cpa offers, advertising, etc.

That's your fundamental issue that's holding you back my friend.

And until you get that settled, "know where your heart points". Most of the good advice in this thread is just contributing to your information overload.

Plus, your starting to display symptoms of Shiny Object Syndrome, jumping from one opportunity to another.

Until you sit down, settle down and focus on where your heart and passions lie, you'll still be looking around and asking the same questions a year from now.

Good to hear you have passion for sports and music.

The best thing is to stick with your interest areas. Most niches are profitable, it all depends on how you're monetizing your website.

Opportunities are always up for grabs. The door is always open and no market is too big for a newbie though it can be competitve. If the niche is big, it means there's lots of money to be made. It means its profitable. You just have to get more creative! You have to appear different! Bring new thing to the table.

PerezHilton is an example. This guy has strong interest in no other areas than music. Who knows you can surpass the fame and wealth he has.

For sports, who knows you'll become the Almighty Sport Analyst? Not even you!

Until you try, you will keep guessing and sabotaging yourself.

With the pet business I have, lots of people like my Facebook and Instagram page because I post cute pictures of pets online. The activity is there if cute posts are being posted, but selling over 500 pet products can be a little competitive. If I was shopping online for just general pet products, Id rather go to a local pets smart or pet store and have the item in my possession instantly, rather wait for shipping.

Im glad one of you told me about a NICHE. Because I was thinking to my self my niche is about PETS. It makes more sense if I did house breaking a pet or something like that. I am actually dealing with house breaking issues with my dog at home as we speak.

But if I want to stick to house breaking, using a general pet domain that I have should work but would it make sense to sell STRICTLY house breaking formula's? Or some toys to.

Maybe I can make my own formula and try selling it.

I don't know...may not be totally necessary to get an entire new domain for housebreaking. Create a landing page on your existing site about housebreaking and work on that area of your site. I would imagine if people are looking for housebreaking products they would need some of the other items your store stocks so you could generate add on sales.

Once that area of your site is performing start focusing on another sub-niche on your existing site...and so on and so forth. Maybe make a "by breed" area of your site and start creating landing pages by breed. All right within the same site...

No I have the domain now that I would use for it. So you're saying when you visit my site, it should have something about house breaking on the home page? Rather then landing on the store as the home page, should it be a blog? Then /store after my domain?

You need to up them profit prices. You dont want to be in the "low price" game where you're tearing your hair out from balancing business income with "play money" income. And cut out the person who writes your blog content. You dont have to start a social site or ad company. Take what's your's. If this is something that you enjoy, and it can be potentially extremely profitable... then run with it, up the prices to where you're comfortable at, and market the heck out of your site.

Only your market research can tell for sure. For example, is anyone making any money in sports apparel for pets? If the answer is yes. How much skin will you have to put in the game to compete with them? If the answer is no, then it'll just be a nice hobby for ya.

Do a bit more digging and really test each and every road to see which you enjoy doing. No point in doing something you don't enjoy --- you won't get very far if you travel down that road. Don't try to be a jack of all trades either... if you market to everyone, you market to no one.

While reading all the posts in this thread, I realized that it is not the big competition that's keeping you from going. It's your fear that it might not work. Not that I'm setting aside the big competition, of course it's an important consideration but you must really follow your passion, what you really want to do in the first place. Your passion must reflect in your site because the competition will suddenly feel lighter if you love what you're doing.

Anyway, congratulations now that you've established your site. I hope you'll be successful. You've been doing internet marketing for quite some time so I know you'll get through the beginning phase. Just don't let negative thoughts get into you.

Once I committed to it and nothing else I found that I worked harder and after 3 months setting up and programming etc.. I have made a very nice full time living ever since.
