What's Your Biggest Article Writing/Marketing Headache?

It's difficult to put yourself into the shoes of others when you have a good
handle on a process. But I constantly hear about the frustrations that people
have with article writing and/or marketing.

So what is it?

What gives you the most fits?

Is it finding stuff to write about?
Is it the keyword research part?
Is it deciding where to submit your articles?
Is it formatting your articles?
Is is simply finding the right words to express yourself?
Is it something else?

What is keeping you from really giving article writing and/or marketing
a try? What's your biggest stumbling block?

Instead of just trying to start a thread and say "okay, do this, do this
and do that" if we can get specific problems addressed I think the thread
as a whole will be more productive.

Don't be shy.

What makes you claim that article writing/marketing is just too hard?

As you can see in my posts spelling is quite a problem for me (I'm from the Netherlands)

Starting to write after i have chosen my title is also always a problem for me. However when i have a few sentences on the screen i'm ok.

      Steven,

      I've read/downloaded many of your article marketing how-to ebooks/reports.
So, I do understand the anatomy of a good article ... one you can write fairly quickly.

However, for me, finding the right words tops my list of writing frustrations.
While I have learned a huge vocabulary, pulling that out of my head and using that knowledge effectively for my target audience is frustrating to say the least.

I frequently have to fight to get my point across without sounding like an elementary student, or sounding boring/dry, or sounding like I'm just rehashing other people's work.

What's stupid is that I got A's in English, British Lit, and other related classes all through my schooling. I have the knowledge pounded into my brain ... just have trouble yanking it back out again.

I know this is a personal problem that I doubt anyone can help with.
But you asked, so I responded *grins*

      Hey Steve, long time...

As you probably know, I do a lot of writing these days too. My biggest problem is not so much procrastination, but a descending film of "I'm bored" that likes to come down over me every so often. Its a royal pain when it happens and its often when I have a lot in front of me.

That tells me that I need to break it down into smaller chunks so they're more easily digestible. It also tells me to go take a break cause I'm working too hard!

That usually fixes it and I can get back to doing what I was doing before I was so rudely interrupted by the lazy part of my brain!

Researching and writing is the hardest part I find. Chopping up other content into unique, rewritten content.

Submitting and stuff isn't a problem. Gaining PR backlinks though is annoying. I got a tool that finds high PR blogs, with windows to post to them. Pretty cool tbh.

With I had one that did it automatically though.

The overwhelm of it all. Instead of just writing you have to think about the audience, keyword for search engines, grammar, flow, telling a compelling story....even with a formula its hard to just get everything together and get an article out there. I also self-edit a lot. I like the idea of the Hypnotic Writing Wizard that Joe Vitale sells but haven't purchased it.

The biggest problem for me was always to write enough articles. I had dozens of little niche sites and all needed content. But that's not all, you need even 10 times more articles to promote your site! And site promotion is an ongoing thing. Article marketing, Web 2.0 page creation etc. When you stop doing it your rankings drop and traffic goes down.

So At the end of the day you look back and find out you are just sitting there the whole day writing content. For some this is ok, especially if you like writing. But at a certain point this doesn't make much sense anymore. Especially when you could give the writing part to someone else and focus your energy on things that help your business more than writing.

    Hi Steven,

As an active article marketer, I read a lot of others' articles and I would guess that a big problem of many aspiring article marketers is: writing an effective, captivating title.

I have read some great gems out there and yet it's almost criminal how a lackluster title prevents many of these gems from being noticed!

I enjoy the research/writing part when I freelance. I like coming up with clickable headlines. I like the challenge of working keywords into an article in a way that will please humans and search engines. I really enjoy reading about copywriting, and try to work those ideas in when I write articles. For instance, using copywriting techniques to create a compelling resource box that encourages clickthroughs.

In my personal article marketing efforts, I have hit a brick wall when it comes to finding profitable niches. I don't know if I'm focusing on the wrong keywords, or the wrong niches altogether.

Some days my problem is that I have to kick my own butt into my office, shove myself down on the chair and slap my fingers on the keyboard. I only have to do that to myself when I know I'm in for an article writing session.
Not kidding - I have bruises

Once I get that part done, it's a piece of cake. Except for finding the right words as Barbara mentioned (not too big and not too small) and knowing I'll be bored silly with the topic by the time I'm done.

My biggest headache is not too big but it is a recurring problem. The doc says there is no hope

The problem is using keywords that do not make sense in a sentence. I can wind myself in knots trying to make keyword phrases sound natural.

Example - This evening my chosen keyword was "awning blinds UK" I got the article done but it was difficult working it in.

I do what many people do and cheat.

I put them in as a paragraph heading. Then I do not have to work it into a sentence so much.

            Hi Ken.

Remember that when working with KWs like this, you can use punctuation and that doesn't affect results.

e.g. When shopping for awning blinds, UK retailers have the variety of styles that you are looking for.

            Love,
            Shannon

    Hi Steven,

Great idea for a post. Writing for me has always been a challenge but I usually have something decent when I'm done. It's just a little like pulling teeth to get started.

The biggest problem I see coming for personally is going to be finding useful subjects to write about. My first niche is of personal interest to me so it's been easy. But I'm concerned about what happens when I get started on something that's not of real great interest or has limited subject matter. How much can be written about snoring for example?

I'm still very new at IM and have decided to try affiliate marketing via articles for my first campaign. So far, I think I'm doing OK with my efforts. I'm looking forward to following this thread. It should prove to be a great learning tool.

    Thanks,
    Tom

    Hey Steven,

My biggest problem is how to keep up with you

But seriously, when writing as much as we Article Marketers do, how do we not feel like we have written the same thing over and over again and not get that thought that we have said it all and wrote it every way possible.

One article seems to run into another and before you know it you wonder if you are just plagiarizing your last few articles. Going back and looking through them just eats up time and forces you to operate off of faith.

Sometimes I wonder if any of my pen names are going to get penalized from stealing from one another.

I'd have to say my biggest problem is coming up with something unique and original to say, and then to make it look good. It's hard for me to find new ideas (even when I know what niche to write about, etc).

Then if I can find something that I feel is good to write about, I have a hard time writing it out and making it look presentable. I usually go over what I've written several dozen times, and constantly find things I don't like, or want to change, and then I get more frustrated. Hours go by and my article seems to get shorter and ends up making no sense.

I love to write but I couldn't write more than 3 articles a day. No matter how I push myself to do it. And if I come up with more than 3 articles I would never dare submit it on the very same day. I know my weakness when I'm not in the mood to write.

It doesn't matter what your niche is but it seems that everywhere you turn someone, somewhere has already written about the topics that you want to write about.

So, you look for a new angle, something unique that has not been covered before.

And you don't find anything, leaving you frustrated which of course leads to procrastination and stops you from finishing the articles.
