Drop In Article Views -- Is This Normal?

I was noticing that I had LARGE drop in adsense revenue during August. When I was reviewing some of my charts I also noticed that more than a few of my articles had a huge drop in views, also in August. Just as an example, a particular article had 200 views in May, 456 views in June, 683 views in July -- but then drops to 38 views in August. I started looking over the rest of the articles that I had written and a fair number follow this same pattern.

Are large drops in views like that part of a normal pattern?

It just seems like a dramatic drop.

    I can definitely tell you this happens. Of course, you will find a few people that will brag that their article views actually increase over time. This is possible too, but a drop is more common.

    Articles which rely on direct article directory traffic, RSS feed traffic and ezine publisher traffic will dip gradually.

    Articles which rely on search engine rankings won't, unless the niche experiences traffic fluctuation, and this happens.

    It's a good idea to build a list so your traffic remains stable by exposing different offers to your list.

      As Fabian has mentioned here it's a good idea to build lists. In fact it's vital. That's my primary goal with article marketing these days. It used to be to send traffic to my AdSense sites a few years ago. Sending traffic to AdSense sites can be very productive if you are in the right niche and use the right long tail keywords. I have over 200 niche sites and most should be converted to adding a squeeze page for long term profits.

        I agree about building lists. I hadn't done it until a couple of months ago, but when I started and got it tweaked around a little my sales took a good jump. Unfortunately whatever seems to be going on with Google has dropped them back down again. BTW, I did buy your "Ezinearticles Manifesto", good stuff, I learned a lot.

    Fabian gives some good info.

    But something else to think about... what topic were the articles about? Was it seasonal, like something about Spring or early Summer?

    Also, were the articles ranking well in Google for certain keywords? If so, check to see if they are still ranking well. If not, then this might be the problem.

        I had a small dip in traffic and earnings in August but if I go to Google Trends I see so did the overall traffic in my niches. Might what to see if your niches were just in a slow trend.

    I'm no expert, but that sounds very much like a page that was ranked high for a good keyword or two, then got dropped down. In my experience, that's almost always the cause for such sharp changes in traffic (either direction). Especially if you've not been doing anything else to drive traffic to that article page. If you find that to be the case, try getting some links to the articles in question to see if you can get them ranked up there again. Sometimes this can be done with very minimal link building, depending on the competitiveness of the keyword(s).
